To add a password to a ZIP file in Windows 11, use an archive utility such as 7-Zip. File Explorer can create an ordinary ZIP, but Microsoft says Windows 11 version 24H2 does not support operations on encrypted archives. Here’s how to create a password-protected ZIP with 7-Zip and check that the recipient can open it.
Why File Explorer cannot add a ZIP password
Windows 11’s built-in compressed-folder feature creates and extracts ordinary ZIP files; it does not add password protection. Microsoft’s guidance for Windows 11 version 24H2 says the system supports ZIP and other archive formats but does not support operations on encrypted archive files. Microsoft recommends a non-Microsoft application, such as 7-Zip, to create or decompress encrypted archives. Microsoft’s ZIP and unzip instructions distinguish ordinary archive handling from encrypted archives.

Right-clicking files and choosing Compress to ZIP file makes a compressed archive, not a password-protected one. Renaming a file or adding it to a ZIP does not encrypt its contents either.

Create a password-protected ZIP with 7-Zip
7-Zip is free and open source, supports Windows 11, and can create ZIP archives using AES-256 encryption. Its official site lists version 26.04, dated October 5, 2026. Download it from the official 7-Zip site.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- Install 7-Zip. If your device is managed by an organization, check whether installing archive software is permitted.
- In File Explorer, select the files or folder you want to protect. To select multiple separate items, hold Ctrl while clicking them.
- Right-click the selection and choose 7-Zip > Add to archive…. Depending on your Windows configuration, you may need to open Show more options first to see the classic context menu.
- In the Add to Archive dialog, set Archive format to zip. This creates a .zip file rather than a .7z archive.
- Enter a unique, long password in the password field, then enter it again in the confirmation field.
- Set Encryption method to AES-256, then select OK. The archive will be created in the current folder unless you change its destination in the dialog.
The format, password, confirmation, and AES-256 selections are also illustrated in the Singapore Infocomm Media Development Authority’s secure ZIP guide.
Check the archive before sharing it
Open the new ZIP or try extracting its contents with the password you set. This catches a mistyped password or a problem with the archive before you send it. A password-protected ZIP is only useful to the recipient if their extraction software supports its encryption method; Windows 11 version 24H2 does not support operations on encrypted archives, so do not assume File Explorer will open it.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Ask the recipient which archive utility they can use if you are unsure about compatibility.
- Send the password through a separate channel from the ZIP, rather than including it in the same email or message.
- Store the password safely. The sources cited here do not establish a password-recovery method, so losing it may leave the archive inaccessible.
What to do with an existing unprotected ZIP
You cannot turn an ordinary ZIP into a password-protected one by renaming it or adding a password in File Explorer. Open or extract the existing archive, select the files, and create a new archive with 7-Zip using the steps above. After checking that the new archive opens with the password, replace or delete the unprotected copy as appropriate; do not leave it in a shared location if its contents should be private.

Choose AES-256 for a new ZIP
For a new encrypted ZIP, select AES-256 in 7-Zip’s encryption method menu. Microsoft’s .NET 11 guidance recommends AES-256 when creating encrypted ZIP entries and warns that ZipCrypto is a legacy method with known weaknesses. That guidance concerns .NET archive encryption; it is not a statement about a File Explorer setting. Microsoft Learn’s ZIP and TAR best practices explains the distinction.

Use .7z only if the recipient can open it
7-Zip can encrypt both ZIP and 7z archives with AES-256, but they are different formats. Choose ZIP if the recipient needs a .zip file. Choose 7z only if the recipient’s software can open it.
Do not assume ZIP encryption hides filenames
The cited documentation establishes AES-256 encryption for ZIP data, but does not establish that ZIP filenames are hidden. If filename confidentiality is essential, do not assume that password-protecting a ZIP provides it.

Do not confuse Windows file encryption with a ZIP password
Windows also has an Encrypt contents to secure data option for files and folders, but it is a separate feature, not a portable password for a ZIP archive. Microsoft says that option is unavailable in Windows Home edition. Microsoft’s file and folder encryption instructions cover that separate feature.
