Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo become a VTuber, choose an avatar format, run it in compatible tracking software, add its output and your audio or gameplay to streaming software, then connect that software to YouTube or Twitch. You do not need a webcam if you have a compatible phone for tracking. For a first 2D setup using VTube Studio, the key compatibility point is that it supports Live2D Cubism models—not VRoid files.
1. Choose an avatar you have the rights to use
Pick a format before choosing software
For a 2D avatar in VTube Studio, use a Live2D Cubism model. VTube Studio does not support VRoid formats, so check compatibility before commissioning, buying, or building a model. The available evidence does not establish a single best app for every 3D or PNG-avatar workflow.

You can commission an original character and rig, make one yourself, or use a model you already have. If you commission or obtain a model, agree with the artist on the rights you need—including livestreaming, monetization, edits, and use of the character outside streams. Permission to use tracking software does not grant rights to the model artwork.
Decide whether you want webcam or phone tracking
VTube Studio documents webcam tracking on Windows and Mac, as well as tracking through iOS or Android. A webcam is optional if a phone-based workflow suits your setup. Its audio-based lip-sync mode requires a microphone; that is a specific tracking option, not a general prerequisite for becoming a VTuber. Good, non-colored lighting can help tracking.

2. Set up the avatar and tracking
- Install software that supports your model. For a Live2D Cubism model, install VTube Studio and import the model using the app’s model setup. Its Steam app is listed as free; webcam watermark removal is an optional DLC, and its mobile apps have free and PRO feature tiers. Check the current store listing and licensing terms before relying on a particular feature.
- Choose and test a tracking input. Start tracking with the webcam or phone method your setup supports. Check that face movement, expressions, and mouth movement behave as expected before adding other scenes or overlays.
- If using phone tracking, reduce device load. VTube Studio’s FAQ recommends Streaming Mode when sending phone tracking data to a computer. It also advises turning off the model and camera preview and lowering screen brightness to reduce phone load and heat.
- Check the lighting and framing. Use even, non-colored light where possible, keep your face visible to the tracking input, and confirm that the avatar remains in frame as you move.
3. Build your streaming scene
VTube Studio says it works with OBS, Streamlabs, and other streaming software. In your chosen program, make a scene that contains the avatar output and whatever else the stream needs: a game or other content source, microphone and desktop audio, and any overlays. The exact capture method depends on the software and operating system, so use the current instructions for your chosen combination rather than assuming every setup uses the same source type.
- Check that the avatar is visible and not hidden behind a game or overlay.
- Listen to the microphone and other audio sources separately; watch for muted inputs, clipping, or unwanted desktop audio.
- Switch scenes and confirm that the avatar and audio remain correct in each one.
- Keep private menus, account details, and setup controls out of the broadcast.
4. Connect to a platform and test privately
- Check the platform’s current live eligibility and rules. YouTube’s current guidance requires a verified channel with no livestream restriction in the previous 90 days, and a streamer must be at least 16. Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms. Confirm current requirements in YouTube Help before scheduling a stream.
- Configure the broadcast in the platform’s live control room. YouTube supports encoder-based streams and offers horizontal and vertical live formats. If you create both formats in Live Control Room, the vertical stream is a center crop by default, shares the same chat, and cannot be added after the broadcast has started.
- Use the platform’s stream key carefully. Copy the key from the platform’s current control room into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat it like a password: do not show it on screen or share it, and reset it through the platform if it is exposed.
- Make a non-public test before your first public broadcast. Check framing, tracking, microphone and game audio, scene changes, and the platform’s preview. Resolve problems before going live to viewers.
5. Check licensing before monetizing
Read the current terms for the tracking app, model, editor, and any SDK or assets you use. VTube Studio’s FAQ says individual streamers may use the app commercially without paid PRO or DLC, including monetized YouTube or Twitch streams, while its current Steam EULA says personal commercial use requires at least one paid iOS or Android version or paid DLC. Because those statements conflict, check the current EULA and ask DenchiSoft before monetizing if the distinction affects you. The EULA also sets separate thresholds and licensing conditions for some companies and agencies; it is not legal advice.
Live2D’s help page from 2019 describes separate Cubism Editor terms by business scale, but it is older guidance and should not be treated as a substitute for current Live2D agreements. Likewise, do not assume an avatar artist’s permission, a tracking app license, or a platform account automatically grants rights to music, game footage, or other material in a stream.
6. Understand platform milestones without treating them as an earnings forecast
Twitch announced revised Affiliate milestones for early June 2026: 4 hours streamed, 4 different streaming days, at least 3 average concurrent viewers on 4 different days, and 25 followers. These are qualification criteria, not a prediction of audience growth or income. Twitch said access to monetization tools and eligibility for payout are distinct: its announcement says streamers must earn Affiliate or Partner status to receive a payout. The rollout note said availability began in the US and would expand globally later in 2026, so check the Creator Dashboard for current regional availability.

StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and playlists that loop as a YouTube livestream; it does not stream a live camera or a reactive VTuber session. It can suit prerecorded avatar content when you want a channel to keep playing while your computer is off. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start your free day.
