How to Create and Save a Custom Filament Profile in PrusaSlicer or OrcaSlicer

Create a reusable filament profile by matching it to your printer, editing material settings, saving a custom preset, and exporting a backup when needed.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To create a reusable filament profile, select the printer and nozzle you will use, start from a suitable filament preset, adjust material settings using the filament maker’s guidance and careful testing, then save it as a custom preset. If you need to move it to another computer, export a configuration or preset bundle as well: saving in the slicer and making a portable backup are separate steps.

Menu names and profile structures vary by slicer. The steps below cover PrusaSlicer and OrcaSlicer; they are not universal instructions for Cura, Bambu Studio, or other applications.

What a filament profile contains

A slicer profile is a saved group of settings, but slicers divide those settings differently. PrusaSlicer describes a profile as a combination of print, filament, and printer settings. Its configuration profiles and bundles use INI format. PrusaSlicer’s profile import and export guide explains those options.

OrcaSlicer separates presets into three types: printer presets for hardware, filament presets for material, and process presets for how to print a part. Its profile guide identifies temperature, cooling, flow ratio, and maximum volumetric speed as examples of filament-related settings. OrcaSlicer’s profile guide describes the categories and settings.

SUNLU PLA Filament 1.75mm, 250g Spool Bundle, 3D Printer Filament
  • 【More Colors for More Projects】 Multiple compact 250g mini spools provide practical amounts of different colors for small prints, multicolor models, accent parts, and test prints. Explore more colors without filling your shelf with full 1kg spools or leaving large amounts of rarely used colors behind
  • 【Easy to Print PLA】 Built for smooth printing with standard PLA profiles, low warping, and dependable layer adhesion. A practical everyday material for beginners and hobbyists making models, toys, decor, prototypes, and utility parts
  • 【Neatly Wound for Reliable Feeding】 Precision winding supports smooth, consistent feeding and helps reduce snags and mid-print interruptions. Keep light tension on the filament end while loading or unloading, and secure it before storage to prevent loose loops
  • 【Consistent Diameter and Steady Extrusion】 A consistent 1.75mm ±0.02mm diameter supports stable flow, even layers, and clean detail from the first layer to the final layer. Reliable extrusion means less time troubleshooting and more time printing
  • 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use

Keep material settings in a filament preset and hardware-specific settings in the appropriate printer preset where the slicer supports that separation. A filament profile is not automatically suitable for every printer simply because it uses the same material name.

Prepare before editing a profile

  • Choose the actual printer and nozzle configuration. Filament settings can depend on the printer; Prusa notes that recommended filament settings may vary by model, including because extruder temperatures differ. Prusa’s template filament guidance explains this printer-specific consideration.
  • Start from a relevant preset or template. A manufacturer or slicer preset is a more useful starting point than an unrelated material profile. Prusa’s universal templates can help create printer-specific filament profiles, but they were tuned with Original Prusa printers and may not perform optimally on other machines.
  • Use settings appropriate to the exact filament. Check the spool or manufacturer’s instructions for the material and confirm compatibility with your printer. There is no single temperature, cooling, or flow value established here for all filaments.
  • Plan to validate the result. A saved profile is a starting point until a print on the intended printer confirms that it works for your material and setup.

Create and save a profile in PrusaSlicer

  1. Select the printer and nozzle configuration you intend to use, then choose a suitable existing filament preset or template as your starting point.
  2. Adjust the material settings needed for the filament and printer. Use manufacturer guidance and evaluate changes through prints on the actual setup; do not assume a universal template is already tuned for a different printer.
  3. Save the edited settings as a named custom profile in PrusaSlicer using the application’s profile controls. The documented export guide covers configuration export, but does not establish one universal GUI label for saving a custom preset across versions.
  4. To make a portable copy, choose File > Export > Export Config for the current profile, or File > Export > Export Config Bundle for custom settings saved in the current PrusaSlicer version. These exports are INI configuration files or bundles.

To restore settings, use File > Import > Import Config for a single profile, File > Import > Import Config from Project to take a profile from a PrusaSlicer project, or File > Import > Import Config Bundle for multiple profiles. Project files such as .3mf and .amf are distinct from INI configuration files. These menu routes are documented in PrusaSlicer’s import and export instructions.

Create and save a profile in OrcaSlicer

  1. Choose the printer preset that matches your hardware and select a suitable filament preset to use as a starting point.
  2. Edit the material settings relevant to the filament. OrcaSlicer’s profile guide includes temperature, cooling, flow ratio, and maximum volumetric speed among filament-related settings. Set values from the material maker’s guidance and validate them on the intended printer.
  3. Save the result as a user filament preset using OrcaSlicer’s preset controls. User presets are stored in the application configuration directory under a user folder. The project documentation does not establish a single save-control label for every version.
  4. To transfer presets, export the user filament preset bundle. On the destination installation, import a bundle through File > Import > Preset Configs.

To find OrcaSlicer’s configuration folder without guessing its location, choose Help > Show Configuration Folder. The documented typical locations are:

Saving in the slicer versus exporting a backup

Saving a user preset makes it available within that slicer installation. Exporting creates a file or bundle you can keep separately or import elsewhere. The formats and routes differ:

Validate the profile on the intended setup

After saving, select the custom filament preset together with the intended printer and process settings, then print with the material it was made for. Judge the result on that combination before treating the profile as reliable. A profile can be saved and exported correctly yet still need adjustment for a different printer, nozzle, or filament.
