Use the feed to share recent updates; use an XML sitemap when you need to list more of your site’s URLs.
Check whether your website already has an RSS feed
Look in your content management system’s documentation or settings for its feed URL. Google Search Central notes that most CMSes create RSS or Atom feeds automatically, so a custom implementation may be unnecessary. Open the feed URL and confirm it contains the posts or other updates you intend to publish. Google Search Central: Build and Submit a Sitemap.

Where to find your WordPress RSS feed URL
WordPress supplies feed endpoints, including RSS 2.0 and Atom. In theme code, its developer documentation provides bloginfo('rss2_url') and bloginfo('atom_url') to output the corresponding URLs. WordPress can expose more than one feed type; label a link clearly so visitors know what it is. If the theme does not display a feed link, add one using the relevant template tag or your site’s usual navigation mechanism. See WordPress Feeds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCreate a custom RSS 2.0 feed
For a site without a suitable generated feed, create an XML response from the site’s canonical content records, such as its database or publishing API. A feed is not a sitemap: include the recent entries the feed is meant to represent, rather than trying to enumerate every page.

Required structure
An RSS 2.0 document has an <rss version="2.0"> root and a <channel> describing the publication. The channel must include title, link, and description. Put each update in an <item>. Items should identify content with a stable link and useful title and description metadata; RSS permits different item-field combinations, so consult the specification for your intended format. This is a structural example, not a production feed: replace all example values, especially the date, with accurate site data. The specific programming language and hosting setup depend on your site; the XML structure and RSS requirements do not.

Escape values and return only XML
Escape XML-special characters in element values—for example, an ampersand in a title must be represented as &. Use an XML serializer or a well-tested escaping function rather than concatenating untrusted titles or descriptions directly into markup. Google’s XML guidance also requires tag values in XML files to be entity escaped. Serve a valid XML document without PHP warnings, debug output, HTML, or unrelated text before or after it. Publish the feed and make its URL discoverable
Serve the feed from a stable, publicly fetchable URL and add a clearly named link on your site so readers can find it. If your CMS has a feed-link feature, use its supported mechanism. For a WordPress theme, use the feed URL template tags described in its documentation. If you later move the feed, redirect the old address where practical so existing subscribers can continue to find it; WordPress’s feed documentation discusses forwarding readers to new feeds.

Keep entries, canonical URLs, and dates accurate
- Use absolute canonical URLs that resolve to the intended pages. Avoid duplicate URLs, redirects where a canonical destination is available, and pages that readers or crawlers cannot fetch.
- Keep the feed focused on recent updates and refresh it when a page is added or meaningfully changed.
- For RSS, use
pubDatein the RSS-specified date format. Do not change a page’s modification date merely because the feed was requested; dates should reflect meaningful content changes.
Google’s guidance distinguishes meaningful modification dates from request time and recommends canonical, fetchable URLs for feeds. Best practices for XML sitemaps and RSS/Atom feeds.
RSS feed or XML sitemap: which should you use?
Use an RSS or Atom feed to communicate recent updates. Use an XML sitemap to provide a broader inventory of URLs you want search engines to discover. Google accepts RSS 2.0 and Atom 1.0 feeds as sitemap formats, but a feed contains only recent URLs, so it does not replace a full XML sitemap for site-wide coverage. You can use both: the feed for fresh changes and the sitemap for broader coverage. Submitting either does not guarantee that URLs will be indexed. Troubleshoot common feed problems
- The feed URL returns a 404: Check the CMS’s documented endpoint and confirm that the feed route is enabled. For a custom feed, verify the published path and server routing.
- A reader or parser reports invalid XML: Check for unescaped ampersands and angle brackets, mismatched tags, invalid encoding, or non-XML output such as warnings or HTML around the document.
- The feed shows old or wrong entries: Check the content query and its ordering, then confirm that the published feed is regenerated or refreshed after updates.
- Dates appear wrong: Ensure each date represents the intended publication or meaningful modification event, uses the RSS date format, and is not reset on every request.
- Search engines discover only some pages: A feed is intended for recent URLs. Add or maintain an XML sitemap for broader URL coverage, and check that feed links point to canonical pages that can be fetched.

RSS is an XML feed format, so ScreenshotNeo is not needed to create or validate the feed itself. If your publishing workflow also needs screenshots of the site, one GET request can return an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request captures the rendered example page:
