Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The dependable way to create an online store with WordPress is to build it in this order: choose hosting and a domain, install WordPress, add WooCommerce, complete its setup wizard, select a lightweight theme, add products, connect payment processing, configure shipping and tax, then test and protect the store before launch. A basic store can be assembled in roughly two to four hours; a store with custom design, complex products or multiple fulfillment rules can take several days.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Start by checking the server rather than installing plugins immediately. Current WooCommerce recommendations call for WordPress 6.9 or newer, PHP 8.3 or newer (tested through PHP 8.4), MySQL 8.0 or newer or MariaDB 10.6 or newer, HTTPS, and at least a 256 MB WordPress memory limit. Those are practical targets, not merely technical trivia: an outdated PHP or database version can prevent installation, cause checkout errors or leave you with an upgrade you must perform immediately.

Prepare the basics before touching the WooCommerce wizard. You need a domain name, WordPress hosting, an administrator account, a way to receive payments, and a plan for delivery and taxes. You also need product information that is ready to publish: names, descriptions, prices, images, stock quantities, SKUs and categories.
Server requirements to use as your target
| Component | Recommended target | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress | 6.9 or later | Current WordPress compatibility and security updates. |
| PHP | 8.3 or later; WooCommerce is tested up to 8.4 | Performance, security and compatibility with current extensions. |
| Database | MySQL 8.0 or later, or MariaDB 10.6 or later | Reliable support for current WordPress and WooCommerce data operations. |
| Transport security | HTTPS for the entire site | Protects login, checkout and customer information. Many managed hosts include a free Let’s Encrypt certificate. |
| WordPress memory | At least 256 MB | Reduces memory failures during administration, imports and checkout. |
Older tutorials often list WordPress 5.8, PHP 7.4 or MySQL 5.6. Treat those as obsolete floors, not goals. WooCommerce 10.8 still documents PHP 7.4 as its enforced minimum, but that does not make PHP 7.4 a sensible new-store choice. PHP support is moving upward: WooCommerce 11.3 adds a dismissible administrator notice for stores running PHP 7.4 or 8.0, and the planned WooCommerce 11.6 release in February 2027 requires PHP 8.1 or newer. Choosing PHP 8.3 now gives you more upgrade headroom.

Check the actual server, not the sales page
After WordPress is installed, open WooCommerce > Status in the dashboard and inspect the Server environment section. Confirm the PHP version, database version, WordPress memory limit and HTTPS status. If a value is below the target, ask the host to upgrade it before building a catalog. Changing PHP on a live store without a backup or staging copy can break an incompatible theme or extension.
Choose hosting and a domain
Use a host that is designed for WordPress workloads and permits WooCommerce. A small catalog can run on ordinary shared hosting, but a WooCommerce-optimised managed WordPress plan generally provides better caching controls, support and upgrade tooling. Shared hosting is usually less expensive, while managed hosting trades a higher recurring price for administration help and more predictable performance. The quoted prices in many setup guides are estimates and change by region, term and promotion, so verify current pricing directly with the provider.
| Hosting approach | Best fit | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Managed WordPress/WooCommerce hosting | Owners who want automatic updates, staging and platform support | Higher recurring cost; some hosts restrict plugins, cron jobs or server settings. |
| General shared hosting | Small stores with modest traffic and a hands-on administrator | Lower price, but resources are shared and WooCommerce troubleshooting may be your responsibility. |
Domain and HTTPS setup
- Register a short domain that is easy to pronounce and spell. Avoid changing it after launch because product links, email addresses and search references will need to be redirected.
- Point the domain’s DNS records to the host using the nameservers or records the host supplies. DNS changes can take time to appear everywhere.
- Enable an SSL certificate and force HTTPS. Check that the home page, product pages, cart and checkout all load with an
https://address and no mixed-content warnings. - Create a separate administrator email address, enable two-factor authentication where available, and store recovery codes offline.
Install WordPress and establish a safe baseline
Most WordPress hosts provide a one-click installer. If you install manually, create the database and administrator account supplied by the host, then complete the WordPress setup at your domain. Immediately remove sample content and set the site title, timezone, language and permalink structure.
Baseline settings
- In Settings > General, confirm the WordPress Address and Site Address both use HTTPS.
- In Settings > Permalinks, choose a readable post structure before publishing products. Changing it later requires redirects.
- Set the correct timezone under Settings > General so order timestamps and scheduled sales use your local business time.
- Keep WordPress, the active theme and plugins updated, but take a backup first and use staging for major updates.
- Delete unused themes and plugins. An inactive extension can still become a security liability if it remains installed.
Install WooCommerce and run the setup wizard
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for WooCommerce, select the official plugin and choose Install Now, then Activate.
- When the onboarding wizard opens, enter the store address, selling locations, currency and whether prices include or exclude tax.
- Select the product types you expect to sell. Physical goods require shipping; downloads need file delivery settings; subscriptions or bookings require additional extensions.
- Choose payment methods shown for your region. You can change them later under WooCommerce settings.
- Define initial shipping zones and methods, then review the tax option. Do not enable an automatic tax service without checking whether it covers your jurisdictions and products.
- Finish the wizard and open the WooCommerce home or settings screens to review every generated page: Shop, Cart, Checkout, My account and any privacy or terms pages.
The wizard creates a workable framework, not a finished business. Open each page in a private browser window and confirm that menus, buttons and checkout links point to the correct URLs.

Choose a theme that will not fight the catalog
A lightweight, WooCommerce-compatible theme is usually a better starting point than a multipurpose theme packed with visual effects. Free options such as Storefront, Botiga, Astra, GeneratePress and Kadence are among the themes commonly used for WooCommerce stores. A paid multipurpose theme can provide more ready-made layouts, but it also adds settings, scripts and another update dependency.
Theme selection checklist
- Verify that the theme supports the current WordPress and WooCommerce versions.
- Check product, cart and checkout templates on a phone-sized screen, not only on a desktop.
- Confirm that typography, color contrast, focus states and button labels remain readable.
- Prefer a theme that uses the WordPress Customizer or Site Editor rather than requiring proprietary page data you cannot export.
- Make changes in a child theme or the theme’s supported customization system so an update does not erase them.
Do not install several page builders just to compare them. Each adds scripts and a different content model. Pick one approach, build a representative product page and test its loading and editing workflow before importing a complete demo.
Add products correctly
WooCommerce product data controls what customers see, what they pay and what the store can fulfill. Gather the information in a spreadsheet first if you have more than a handful of products.
Create a simple physical product
- Go to Products > Add New and enter a specific product name.
- Write a description that explains the outcome, materials, dimensions, compatibility and what is included. Use the short description for the most important buying facts.
- Upload a clear main image and a consistent gallery. Crop images to a common aspect ratio and add meaningful alternative text.
- Enter the regular price and, if applicable, a sale price with scheduled dates.
- Under Inventory, assign a unique SKU, enable stock management if you track quantity, and define whether backorders are allowed.
- Set shipping weight and dimensions when carrier rates or shipping classes depend on them.
- Assign categories and tags. Use categories for the main navigation and tags for secondary attributes customers may filter.
- Save a draft, preview it as a customer and publish only after checking the price, images, stock message and add-to-cart behavior.
Use the right product type
- Variable product: use attributes such as size or color to create purchasable variations, each with its own SKU, price, stock and image when necessary.
- Virtual product: removes shipping fields for services or other non-shipped items.
- Downloadable product: attaches files and controls download limits and expiry. Store files where unauthorized visitors cannot guess a public URL.
- Grouped or external product: useful for bundles or listings fulfilled elsewhere, but confirm that the checkout and inventory behavior matches your business.
Before importing hundreds of products, manually complete one product of every type you will sell. That exposes mistakes in attributes, tax classes and shipping fields while they are still easy to correct.

Connect payments and test them safely
Payment setup requires an account with a processor and the API credentials or connection flow it provides. Common choices include card processing through a gateway, PayPal, regional methods such as Bancontact in Belgium, and buy-now-pay-later services such as Klarna or Riverty where they operate. WooPayments may be available in supported markets. Offline methods, including cheque or cash on delivery, can be enabled when they make operational sense.
| Payment category | When it helps | Important checks |
|---|---|---|
| Card gateway | Customers expect card checkout and automatic payment confirmation | Processor account approval, API connection, webhooks, refunds and supported countries. |
| PayPal | Customers prefer a wallet or do not want to enter card details | Correct account type, return URLs and order-status synchronization. |
| Regional or pay-later method | A significant audience uses a local method or installment option | Country eligibility, currency, product restrictions and settlement timing. |
| Offline payment | Payment is collected outside the checkout, such as cash on delivery | Orders may remain on hold; define who confirms payment and when stock is released. |
Processing fees, currency conversion charges and payout schedules vary by processor and were not established here; read the current terms for the countries in which you sell. Never promise a specific fee in store copy unless you have verified the applicable account and region.
Use test mode before accepting real orders
- Create or open the processor’s developer or test account and obtain its test credentials.
- In the gateway’s WooCommerce settings, enable test or sandbox mode and enter the test keys. Keep live keys out of screenshots, support tickets and version-controlled files.
- Place successful and deliberately failed test transactions. Check that the order changes to the expected status, stock is reduced once, confirmation email is sent and the customer returns to the correct page.
- Test a refund, a canceled payment and a payment that requires additional authentication if the gateway supports it.
- Review webhook or callback settings. A payment can succeed at the processor while WooCommerce remains on hold if the callback URL is blocked.
- Disable test mode, replace test keys with live credentials and make one small real transaction after launch to verify the complete path.
Configure shipping zones and tax
Shipping configuration
- Open WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping and create zones based on the destinations you actually serve, such as a home country, neighboring countries and the rest of the world.
- Add methods to each zone: flat rate, free shipping or local pickup are common starting points. Enter the conditions for free shipping and the charge for each package type.
- Assign shipping classes when products have materially different handling costs, such as oversized or fragile items.
- Set the store’s default customer location and decide whether shipping is calculated from the billing or shipping address.
- Place test orders to every zone. Confirm that an out-of-zone address cannot select a method that you cannot fulfill.
Tax configuration
Tax treatment depends on where your business is registered, where the customer is located, the product category and whether you sell digital goods. In the WooCommerce settings, enable taxes only after deciding whether catalog prices are entered inclusive or exclusive of tax. Then create the necessary standard, reduced or zero-rate rules for each jurisdiction, or connect a tax service that covers your obligations. Ask a qualified tax professional about registration, invoices, exemptions and record retention; software settings do not determine your legal liability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Backups, staging and daily operations
A store is not ready for customers until you can recover it. Use backups that include both the database and uploaded files, keep at least one copy off the server, and verify that a restore actually works. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.

- Schedule frequent database backups because orders change constantly, plus file backups after product or theme changes.

- Review WooCommerce > Status after updates and record PHP, database and memory values.
- Restrict administrator accounts to people who need them and use separate accounts instead of sharing one password.
- Monitor failed orders, unpaid orders, low stock, payment disputes and outgoing email. Set a routine for responding rather than waiting for a customer complaint.
Launch checklist
- Open the home page, category, product, cart, checkout, account, privacy and contact pages in an incognito window.
- Complete a successful test purchase and a failed-payment test with the gateway in live mode only when you are ready.
- Confirm product stock, SKU, tax, shipping charge and order total on the admin order screen.
- Verify that customer and administrator emails arrive, including a password-reset email.
- Test the store on a phone and a desktop, including keyboard navigation and readable error messages.
- Check that every public page uses HTTPS and that no placeholder text, sample products or staging URLs remain.
- Publish shipping, returns, privacy, terms and contact information appropriate to your business and jurisdiction.
- Take a fresh offsite backup and write down the recovery contact, hosting login and payment-processor access procedure.
Common problems and fixes
WooCommerce will not install or activate
Check the WordPress version, PHP version, database version and memory limit in WooCommerce > Status. Upgrade the server to the current targets rather than forcing an old plugin version. If activation still fails, temporarily switch to a default theme and deactivate nonessential plugins, then reactivate items one at a time to identify a conflict.
Checkout shows no payment method
Confirm that the gateway is enabled, the store currency and selling country are supported, and the account has completed verification. Check that live credentials are not being used while test mode is enabled, and inspect webhook errors when the processor records a payment but WooCommerce does not.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Shipping is missing or has the wrong price
Compare the customer’s address with the shipping-zone order. WooCommerce uses the first matching zone, so overlapping zones can produce unexpected methods. Check product dimensions, shipping class, free-shipping conditions and whether the item is marked virtual.
Orders remain pending or stock is wrong
Pending status can mean the payment was not completed, the callback failed or an offline method is awaiting confirmation. Review the gateway log and order notes, then verify that stock is reduced only at the intended order status. Do not manually mark an order paid until you have confirmed the processor transaction.
Best Value
The site is slow after adding products
Measure before adding more optimization plugins. Large uncompressed images, excessive page-builder scripts, low PHP memory and overloaded shared hosting are common causes. Resize product images, remove unused extensions, enable the host’s supported caching and discuss a resource upgrade if traffic or catalog size exceeds the plan.
How long the project takes
A basic store with a few products, a standard theme, one payment gateway and simple domestic shipping can be assembled in about two to four hours once the domain and hosting are ready. Custom branding, product photography, hundreds of variations, multiple currencies, international tax rules, carrier integrations and approval for payment accounts can extend the work to several days or longer. Treat the first launch as a controlled release: publish a small, accurate catalog, verify real orders and then add complexity in staging.
What the store will cost
There is no single WooCommerce price. WordPress and the WooCommerce core plugin can be used without a license fee, but a functioning store normally has recurring costs for hosting and a domain, plus optional paid themes or extensions, payment processing, email delivery, backups and tax or shipping services. Hosting promotions, renewal rates and processor fees vary by country and account, so obtain current terms before committing. Keep a written list of every recurring service and its renewal date; unexpected renewals are a common source of budget surprises.
