To create an NFT, prepare the digital file and its details, connect a crypto wallet, choose a blockchain and minting route, then publish the item by approving the required wallet transactions. This guide uses OpenSea Studio’s documented workflow as a practical example; other marketplaces and chains may work differently.
What creating an NFT involves
An NFT is a blockchain record associated with a digital item. In OpenSea Studio’s collection workflow, creation involves deploying a smart contract for the collection, adding media and metadata, and minting the item through a wallet transaction. The item is recorded on the chain you select; that does not guarantee every marketplace will display it.

Before starting, decide what the NFT represents, what a buyer receives, whether it is a one-off or edition, and whether it carries any access or utility promise. Do not imply that purchasing an NFT automatically transfers copyright or guarantees an investment return.
Choose how you will mint
Direct collection minting
With direct creation, you mint items into your own wallet first. This can suit a newcomer or a smaller community because the items exist before you offer them to buyers.

A Drop
With a Drop, buyers mint items directly into their own wallets; the items do not exist until they are minted. OpenSea says this route may suit creators with an established interested community. The choice is about who mints and when—not simply the artwork format. OpenSea’s Drops FAQ explains the distinction.
What you need before you begin
- A digital asset: Prepare the image, animation, audio, or other supported media you intend to publish. OpenSea’s current guide says items in a collection must use the same file type.
- A compatible crypto wallet: It controls access to your blockchain address and signs transactions. Securely back up its recovery credentials; never share a seed phrase with someone claiming to be support.
- A chain and a route: Consider wallet compatibility, your intended audience, supported marketplaces, and transaction costs. Check OpenSea Studio’s current chain options in the product rather than relying on an old list.
- Collection details: Choose a logo, collection contract name, token symbol, item names, and intended supply. The contract name and token symbol cannot be changed after deployment.
OpenSea’s NFT creation guide documents its Studio workflow. Its steps are specific to OpenSea and EVM chains; they are not universal instructions for every NFT platform.

Create an NFT in OpenSea Studio
- Connect your wallet. Open OpenSea Studio, connect the wallet that will control the collection, and make sure it is set to a chain supported by the creation flow.
- Start a collection. Select Create new, then Create Collection. Add a logo and enter the collection contract name and token symbol. Review spelling and branding carefully: these two contract details cannot be changed after deployment.
- Select the blockchain and deploy. Choose an available EVM blockchain, then approve the contract deployment in your wallet. Deployment is an on-chain transaction and requires gas. Do not assume the chain list or costs will remain unchanged.
- Add the NFT’s media and details. Upload the asset and enter its name and supply. Add a description, external link, or traits if useful. In this workflow, a supply of 1 makes that item unique within the collection. OpenSea says the NFTs in one collection must use the same file type.
- Mint the item. Select Mint and approve the wallet transaction. Before signing, check the destination collection, media, item details, and supply. Editing saved media or details can require another signed transaction and gas.
- Set sale and creator-earnings preferences. Review the payout address and decide whether creator earnings should be optional or enforced. OpenSea’s current guidance says enforced earnings require compatible ERC721-C or ERC1155-C contracts and can limit supported sales to OpenSea and marketplaces using LimitBreak’s Payment Processor; the article names Magic Eden as one example.
- Verify and share. Check the item on the selected blockchain explorer and in marketplaces that support that chain. An item may appear elsewhere, but marketplace indexing and display are not guaranteed to be universal.

| Choice | Question to ask | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Direct mint or Drop | Should you mint inventory first, or should buyers mint it? | Direct mint puts items in your wallet immediately. A Drop depends on buyer minting and may suit a creator with an established community. OpenSea Drops FAQ. |
| Blockchain | Which wallets, buyers, and marketplaces need to work with the collection? | Chain availability and gas costs vary. Confirm current Studio support before publishing. OpenSea creation guide. |
| Supply | Is this intended to be a unique item or an edition? | The Studio workflow allows you to set supply; a supply of 1 creates a unique item within that collection flow. OpenSea creation guide. |
| Optional or enforced earnings | Is broader marketplace compatibility more important than enforcing creator payments on OpenSea? | Optional earnings rely on seller choice. Enforcement requires compatible contract standards and may narrow marketplace support. OpenSea creator-earnings guidance. |
How much does it cost to create an NFT?
There is no universal minting price. Gas is paid to blockchain validators to process transactions, not to OpenSea, and the amount can change with chain and network activity. A failed attempt can still consume gas, according to OpenSea’s Drops FAQ. OpenSea also says it does not receive a fee when you use the Create a Collection feature in Studio; that does not make the blockchain transactions free.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOpenSea’s fee page, published May 12, 2026, lists a typical 1% fee for NFT sales and a 10% fee for minting an NFT in a primary Drop. These are OpenSea’s platform fees, not gas charges, and the page says fees may change. Check the current OpenSea fee schedule before setting sale terms.

Creator earnings are not guaranteed on every resale
OpenSea distinguishes optional creator earnings from contract-enforced earnings. Optional earnings depend on the seller or marketplace honoring them. Enforcement depends on compatible ERC721-C or ERC1155-C standards, and may restrict where supported sales can take place. Neither setting establishes that every secondary sale on every marketplace will pay the creator. Review OpenSea’s creator-earnings guidance alongside your contract and marketplace choices.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Deploying before checking the collection identity: The contract name and token symbol cannot be changed after deployment, and OpenSea’s guide says NFTs cannot be moved between collections later.
- Assuming minting is free: Contract deployment and minting involve blockchain transactions; gas varies and a failed transaction may still cost gas.
- Using stale instructions: Follow the current OpenSea Help Center workflow rather than older material that describes lazy minting. The dated Studio guide documents contract deployment and wallet approval.
- Expecting universal visibility: Items may show on other marketplaces that support the chain, but support, indexing, and display differ.
- Trusting requests for recovery credentials or gas transfers: Never share your seed phrase. OpenSea’s gas guidance warns that it will not ask you to send funds to a private wallet for gas.
After minting: verify the record and explain the offer
Confirm the transaction and item on the selected chain, then make sure the marketplace page shows the intended media, description, collection, and supply. OpenSea’s Creator FAQ says a minted item may be available on other marketplaces that support the chain, but that is not a promise of universal visibility. When sharing the item, describe exactly what the buyer receives and avoid implying that a token automatically conveys intellectual-property rights.
