While moving house, Andrea wanted to understand the layout of his new home in a way ordinary photos could not provide. “Regular photos weren’t enough.” He built a simple tool to connect 360° panoramas into an interactive tour—and, after sharing it, found that other people needed it too.
It began with a problem in a new home
Andrea’s starting point was personal and practical: he was moving and wanted a more immersive way to visualize the space he was moving into. Rather than look for a ready-made solution, he took the familiar developer route and made one.

“I created a simple tool to connect 360° panoramas and turn them into an interactive virtual tour.” The first version had a focused job: link panoramic images so someone could move through a space instead of viewing a collection of disconnected photos.

Andrea says he published the source code on a marketplace as an experiment, without expecting much. People began buying it. Their requests, bug reports, and unexpected ways of using the software gave him a new source of direction: the product was no longer just a solution to his moving-house problem.

He describes an audience that grew to include photographers, agencies, developers, and businesses. Those groups did not all need the same thing. Some wanted more capabilities; others had different preferences for how the software should be installed and operated.
Feedback expanded the scope—and the work
Andrea says the project grew to include areas he had not been thinking about when he wrote the first version, including VR, AI tools, Google Street View integration, cloud hosting, and SaaS features. He reports releasing more than 100 updates over five years. That is his account of the development history, not an independently audited release count.

More requests did not automatically mean every idea belonged in the product. “Every feature adds complexity.” As Andrea explains it, a new capability has to work with existing ones, be maintained over time, and can introduce new ways for the software to fail. Product development therefore involves choosing what not to build as much as deciding what to add.

His concise description of the ongoing cycle is: “It’s when the real development begins.” The first working version solved one problem; feedback revealed the larger set of jobs and trade-offs the product would need to handle.

Why he added a cloud option
Andrea initially offered software users installed on their own servers. That suited people who wanted control and ownership, including control over their data. But installation and ongoing operations were not attractive to everyone. As he puts it, “Not everyone wants to manage a server.” He says some users wanted to avoid dealing with servers, databases, updates, and infrastructure, so he added a cloud version.

Neither approach is universally better. The difference is a practical division of responsibility: self-hosting puts more control and operational work with the user, while cloud hosting reduces the need to manage infrastructure.

What the platform offers now
Simple Virtual Tour’s current website describes a broader workflow than Andrea’s original panorama-linking tool. Users can upload panoramic images or video, connect rooms, add hotspots, and publish tours using links, embeds, QR codes, or social networks. The site currently presents both cloud-hosted and self-hosted options. Those are present-day product descriptions; they should not be read as a list of features in the first version.

For someone starting a tour, the basic distinction is between capturing the source material and assembling the experience. Panoramic images or video provide the visual content; room links and hotspots make it navigable and interactive; a publication method lets others view it. The account does not identify the camera Andrea used, so it does not support a recommendation for a particular capture device.

The lesson behind the origin story
The project’s path was not simply “spot an idea, build a tool, and scale it.” A personal need produced a narrow first version. Sharing it exposed demand, and users helped reveal different audiences and deployment preferences. The hard part then became balancing useful additions against complexity, maintenance, and reliability.
For builders, Andrea’s story is a reminder that an initial use case can be enough to start, but real product decisions emerge when other people rely on the result. For anyone choosing a virtual-tour workflow, the same story points to an important question beyond features: do you want to operate the software yourself, or would you rather leave hosting and infrastructure to a service?
