Use OBS Studio to keep a rights-cleared video or playlist ready to play, then rehearse switching your live program to it. For one clip, use an OBS Media Source with Loop enabled; for several clips, use VLC Video with Loop Playlist enabled. This protects against a program feed going blank only while OBS, the computer, power, and network remain available—it does not automatically replace a failed encoder or restore a broken connection.
What an emergency fallback playlist can—and cannot—do
A fallback playlist is prerecorded material you can switch to when your main program source has a problem. OBS can loop a single media file or a playlist of files, but the playback feature is not a YouTube service that detects a problem and automatically substitutes local video.

Think about failures by layer: a looping source addresses the content playing inside OBS; a backup encoder addresses encoder failure; a reliable network addresses connectivity risk. A playlist on the same computer cannot restart that computer after a crash, restore power, or repair an internet outage. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend reliable connectivity and 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, and describe testing a separately configured backup encoder.
Choose the right fallback method

For a single emergency message or holding video, Media Source is the simpler setup. Use VLC Video when multiple prepared files should run as one list. If you need protection against an encoder failure, plan and test a separate encoder path rather than treating the playlist as redundancy.

Prepare the emergency media
- Choose appropriate, rights-cleared material. Use video and audio you have permission to stream. Make the content suitable for the channel and avoid a blank or misleading presentation.
- Keep files accessible to OBS. Store the media on the computer running OBS and verify that every file opens, plays with the intended audio and video, and is available when needed.
- Decide playback order. For emergency messaging, a predictable order is usually easier to review than shuffle. Confirm the playlist order and the transition you expect before relying on it.
OBS documents the relevant source types and playback behaviors in its Media Sources guide. VLC Video depends on VLC being installed; OBS and VLC must have compatible bitness.
Set up a looping source in OBS
Loop one file with Media Source
- In the OBS scene you will use for the fallback, add a Media Source and select the emergency video file.
- Enable the source’s Loop option so the file repeats when it reaches the end.
- Check the scene preview. Confirm that the video is visible and that the audio plays at an appropriate level.
Loop multiple files with VLC Video
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. Use a VLC installation whose bitness is compatible with OBS.
- Add a VLC Video source to the fallback scene and load the prepared files into its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist. Review the order, or deliberately choose shuffle if that suits the material.
- Preview the source and verify that each file plays as intended and that playback returns to the playlist after the final item.
OBS source controls can vary by version. If a source does not appear or play, check that VLC is installed and compatible, then verify the file path and test the media directly.

Connect OBS to your YouTube live stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to find the stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the stream URL and stream key in OBS’s streaming configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not share it, and reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Start OBS early enough to inspect the incoming feed in YouTube Live Control Room. Check the preview, then verify the published watch page and mobile playback.
- Monitor audio and video before relying on the setup. Confirm that the intended fallback scene and source are ready to be activated by the operator.
Use the stream URL and key displayed for the selected stream rather than assuming a previously saved key or endpoint is still the right one.
Rehearse switching and encoder recovery
- Practice changing from the main program scene or source to the fallback scene while the stream is running. Confirm that the fallback video and audio reach the YouTube preview and watch page.
- Practice returning to the main program, and identify who is responsible for switching if an incident occurs.
- If you have configured a backup encoder, test it separately. YouTube’s instruction is: “For test encoder failover, stop the primary encoder (or unplug its Ethernet cable) and make sure the player rolls over to the backup encoder.” Follow the procedure in YouTube’s streaming tips and confirm which encoder is carrying the feed.
- Write down the operator, alert route, recovery steps, and escalation contact somewhere accessible even if the streaming computer is unavailable.
Do not test a live failover on an audience-facing stream unless you have planned for the interruption. A fallback scene rehearsal and an encoder failover rehearsal exercise different parts of the system.

Account for long-stream limits
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder instructions. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable, according to its DVR guidance. Do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will have complete rewind or a complete archive.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The Media Source stops at the end: Check that Loop is enabled on that source and preview it through the end of the file.
- The VLC playlist does not appear or play: Confirm that VLC is installed, that its bitness is compatible with OBS, and that the playlist files are reachable and playable.
- The fallback works in OBS but not on YouTube: Check the selected stream URL and key, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and published watch page.
- The stream stops when the computer or network fails: A local OBS playlist cannot recover a failed host or connection. Restore the failed component or use a separately configured and tested backup encoder for encoder redundancy.
- The backup encoder does not take over: Recheck its configuration and repeat YouTube’s prescribed test, confirming that the player rolls over to the backup encoder.
- The stream is stable but viewers cannot rewind the full broadcast: Long-stream DVR behavior is limited; YouTube warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours.
