How to Create an eLearning Website With WordPress: A Complete Setup Guide

A practical guide to building an eLearning website with WordPress, from choosing an LMS and preparing hosting to configuring enrollment, payments, quizzes, certificates, privacy, and performance.

To create an eLearning website with WordPress, install an LMS plugin on a compatible WordPress site, design your course structure, configure learner accounts and payments, then test the complete journey from registration to certificate. The reliable approach is to settle your site boundary, hosting capacity, course model, and privacy obligations before producing lessons.

What a WordPress eLearning website consists of

WordPress supplies the website, publishing tools, user accounts, themes, and extensions. An LMS plugin adds the learning layer: courses, sections, lessons, topics, quizzes, prerequisites, progress tracking, certificates, enrollment rules, and reporting. You can add that layer to an existing WordPress installation or build a separate course site.

Decide the site boundary before installing anything. The choice affects branding, user accounts, navigation, maintenance, and how much ordinary website traffic shares resources with logged-in learners.

Boundary Best fit Operational implication
Main domain, such as example.com A business whose public website and academy should feel like one property One WordPress installation, navigation system, user database, and maintenance schedule
Subdomain, such as academy.example.com A separate learning experience that still belongs to the same brand Clear separation of course operations, with its own theme, menus, testing, and potentially its own WordPress installation
Subdirectory, such as example.com/academy A course area that should remain tightly integrated with the main site URL and server configuration must support the subdirectory; shared resources can make capacity planning more important

Use the existing site when its theme, plugins, database, and hosting can safely handle logged-in learners. Use a separate installation when you need account separation, independent releases, or protection for a high-traffic marketing site.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose hosting before you build courses

An LMS is a dynamic application, not just a collection of cached pages. Student dashboards, enrollment checks, quiz submissions, progress records, and certificate generation require database and PHP resources. Confirm compatibility and capacity before importing videos or writing dozens of lessons.

Minimum platform requirements documented by the major LMS options

Requirement LearnDash documentation LifterLMS current requirements page
WordPress 6.6 or newer 6.7 recommended
LMS version LearnDash 4.7 or newer Not stated as a separate minimum in the cited requirements summary
PHP 7.4 or newer; PHP 8.3 recommended for performance and security PHP 8.3 recommended
Database MySQL 5.6 or newer, or MariaDB 10.1 or newer MySQL 8.0 or newer, or MariaDB 10.6 or newer
Web server Not stated in the cited summary Nginx or Apache with mod_rewrite
Transport security HTTPS required HTTPS should be enabled for the site and every payment or account page
PHP memory 128 MB PHP memory listed Not stated in the cited summary

These are the versions documented by the respective plugin teams and can change. Check the current requirement page for the exact plugin release you plan to install. If your host cannot provide the recommended versions, change hosts or postpone the LMS installation rather than building on an unsupported stack.

Hosting checks to complete

  • Confirm the WordPress, PHP, database, and web-server versions in the hosting control panel or ask support for them in writing.
  • Set HTTPS at the domain level and verify that WordPress Address and Site Address both use https://.
  • Confirm at least the LMS-documented PHP memory limit; raise it when your host permits and your course plugins need more.
  • Ask how the host handles object caching, page caching, backups, staging, PHP workers, and database restoration.
  • Check upload limits for lesson files and plugin packages. Large videos are usually better delivered by a dedicated video service than stored in the WordPress media library.
  • Plan a staging site where plugin, theme, PHP, and WordPress updates can be tested with a copy of the course database.

Choose an LMS by course model, not popularity

LifterLMS and LearnDash both cover the core LMS job, but the amount of configuration and the add-ons you need depends on your course model. Compare the workflow you will operate every week, not a generic feature count.

Decision area LifterLMS LearnDash
Authoring workflow Course and lesson creation with multimedia lessons, sections, drip content, prerequisites, and progress tracking; a setup wizard helps with initial configuration. Course builder, reusable or shared course steps, lessons, topics, prerequisites, completion rules, and course-access settings.
Quizzes and assessment Timed or open quizzes with progress and reporting features. Dedicated quiz tools integrated with course builders and completion rules.
Certificates Certificates can be attached to course or achievement completion. Certificates can be assigned through course and quiz completion workflows.
Memberships and subscriptions Memberships and subscriptions are documented parts of its model. Available enrollment and payment behavior depends on the core configuration and selected integrations or add-ons.
Payments Stripe and PayPal gateways are documented, along with memberships and subscriptions. Built-in payment and enrollment flow is documented; verify the gateway and recurring-payment integration required for your region.
Registration experience WordPress accounts, memberships, and checkout are configured through the LMS and its pages. Built-in registration, login, password recovery, payment, and post-payment enrollment are documented.
Reporting Progress and reporting tools are documented for learner and course activity. Reporting is available through its course and quiz administration tools.
Infrastructure baseline Current guidance recommends WordPress 6.7, PHP 8.3, MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.6, and Nginx or Apache with mod_rewrite. Documented baseline includes WordPress 6.6+, LearnDash 4.7+, PHP 7.4+, MySQL 5.6+ or MariaDB 10.1+, HTTPS, and 128 MB PHP memory; PHP 8.3 is recommended.

Choose LifterLMS when its membership, subscription, and multimedia lesson workflow matches your offer with acceptable configuration. Choose LearnDash when its builder, shared course steps, and access-rule workflow fit your catalog. In either case, list every required integration before purchase: payment gateways, email delivery, certificates, reporting, video delivery, and any membership or community connection.

Design the learning architecture before producing content

Write the structure on paper or in a spreadsheet first. Changing a hierarchy after students enroll can invalidate progress, URLs, certificates, and access rules.

Use a consistent hierarchy

  1. Course: the product a learner enrolls in, such as “Introductory Data Analysis.”
  2. Section or module: a meaningful phase or subject area.
  3. Lesson: one teachable unit with a clear outcome.
  4. Topic: an optional subdivision when a lesson needs several short concepts.
  5. Quiz or assignment: an assessment attached to the relevant lesson or section.
  6. Certificate: an outcome issued only when the defined completion conditions are met.

Define completion rules explicitly

  • Decide whether a learner must view a lesson, mark it complete, pass a quiz, submit an assignment, or satisfy several conditions.
  • Set passing scores, attempt limits, time limits, and retake behavior before publishing a quiz.
  • Use prerequisites when later material depends on a specific lesson, quiz, or earlier course.
  • Choose whether content is available immediately or released on a drip schedule after enrollment or a previous completion.
  • Specify exactly when a certificate is generated and what name, course title, date, and completion identifier it displays.

Keep each lesson focused enough that its completion state has meaning. A single enormous page makes progress reporting and troubleshooting harder; dozens of empty topics make navigation harder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install WordPress and the LMS

Prepare the WordPress installation

  1. Point the chosen domain, subdomain, or subdirectory to the host and enable HTTPS.
  2. Install a current WordPress release that satisfies your LMS requirement.
  3. Set the site language, timezone, administrator email, permalink structure, and a backup schedule.
  4. Install a lightweight, accessible theme and remove unused plugins before adding the LMS.
  5. Create a staging copy if your host provides one, and test updates there first.

Install LifterLMS

  1. In WordPress, open Plugins > Add New, search for LifterLMS, install it, and activate it.
  2. Run the LifterLMS setup wizard. Create or confirm the pages it uses for courses, checkout, student account, and membership content.
  3. Review currency, country, taxation settings, email sender details, and the default enrollment behavior before publishing a product.
  4. Connect the payment gateway you intend to use and complete its verification or test-mode setup.

Install LearnDash

  1. Download the LearnDash plugin package from your account.
  2. In WordPress, open Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin, select the package, install it, and activate it.
  3. Enter the license information where requested and confirm the plugin is receiving updates.
  4. Review the registration, login, password-recovery, payment, and enrollment settings before creating public course links.

Do not install both LMS plugins on the same production site merely to compare them. Their course, account, checkout, and completion systems overlap; running both can create confusing shortcodes, duplicate pages, and competing access records. Test one on staging, then remove it completely before adopting the other.

Build the course and its access rules

  1. Create the course title, description, featured image, difficulty, estimated workload, instructor information, and learning outcomes.
  2. Build sections, lessons, topics, and quizzes in the planned order. Use the LMS course builder rather than manually linking isolated posts so completion data remains connected.
  3. Add video, audio, documents, transcripts, and downloadable exercises. Provide text alternatives for essential information and captions for spoken video.
  4. Configure prerequisites, drip schedules, lesson completion, quiz passing scores, and certificate triggers.
  5. Set the course visibility and access mode: open, enrollment-required, one-time purchase, membership-only, or subscription, according to the LMS features and integrations you selected.
  6. Preview the course as an administrator and as a newly registered student. Confirm that locked lessons remain locked and that completed lessons change state correctly.

Configure student accounts, checkout, and enrollment

A paid course is not complete when a payment form works. The account must be created, the transaction recorded, and the correct course access granted without exposing another student’s data.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Account and recovery pages

  1. Enable WordPress registration and use a dedicated registration page with a clear explanation of required fields.
  2. Provide login and password-recovery links in the header, checkout, dashboard, and course pages.
  3. Decide whether learners can create an account during checkout or must register first. Use one predictable path rather than presenting both without explanation.
  4. Set the sender name and address for welcome, enrollment, password-reset, payment, and completion emails. Send test messages to multiple mail providers.

Payment and enrollment sequence

  1. Create the course or membership product and set its access rule.
  2. Connect Stripe, PayPal, or another gateway supported by your chosen LMS and region. Keep credentials in the gateway’s secure settings, not in lesson content.
  3. Use sandbox or test mode to check successful payments, declined payments, cancelled checkouts, refunds, and recurring-payment renewal or failure if subscriptions are offered.
  4. Verify the post-payment redirect: the learner should land on a confirmation or course-start page, not an administrator screen or an empty cart.
  5. Check that a successful transaction creates exactly one account and one enrollment, while a failed or abandoned transaction creates no course access.
  6. Document how staff revoke access, handle refunds, transfer an enrollment, and respond when a webhook or confirmation email is delayed.

For subscriptions, test the full lifecycle: initial charge, renewal, failed renewal, cancellation, expiration, and reactivation. Access rules should follow the payment state you intend, and the policy should be explained before checkout.

Add quizzes, progress tracking, and certificates

Use assessments to prove learning, not merely to add interaction. State what a learner must achieve and make the scoring rule visible before the attempt begins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Mix question types only when each measures the stated objective. Explain whether unanswered questions count as incorrect.
  • Set a time limit only when speed is part of the learning objective; otherwise it can measure time pressure rather than knowledge.
  • Choose whether answers and explanations appear immediately or after submission. Delay correct answers when revealing them would undermine later attempts.
  • Define the pass mark, number of attempts, retake delay, and whether the highest or latest score controls completion.
  • Test progress with a fresh account, a partially completed account, a failed quiz, and a passed quiz.

Design certificates as records, not decoration. Include the learner’s displayed name, course title, completion date, issuing organization, and a verification method if your workflow supports one. Check that a learner cannot obtain a certificate by visiting a completion URL directly.

Make navigation and communication obvious

A learner should be able to move from landing page to registration, payment, course start, lesson completion, and certificate without guessing.

Handle privacy and data protection deliberately

Publish a privacy policy and terms that match the data your site and integrations actually process. Identify account fields, quiz answers, progress records, certificates, payment information, analytics, email systems, video providers, support tools, and retention periods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LifterLMS integrates with WordPress privacy tools for data exports and erasures, but its documentation explicitly warns: “This does not alone guarantee GDPR compliance!” Treat the tools as implementation aids, not legal certification. Review the configuration of every additional plugin and service, determine the lawful basis and consent behavior where applicable, and provide a process for access, correction, deletion, and complaints.

  • Minimize collected fields; do not request information that the course does not need.
  • Use HTTPS for login, checkout, dashboards, and embedded resources.
  • Restrict administrator roles and audit who can export learner records.
  • Set retention rules for inactive accounts, quiz attempts, support tickets, and certificates.
  • Document processor relationships with payment, email, analytics, and video providers.

Plan media delivery and performance

Course sites consume more resources as logged-in users, simultaneous video playback, interactive quizzes, and catalog size increase. A host that is adequate for a brochure site may produce slow dashboards or timeouts under learner traffic.

Keep dynamic pages correct

Student dashboards, checkout pages, progress views, and personalized course content must not be served from a shared public cache. LifterLMS warns that caching dynamic student pages can show the wrong learner data or prevent correct content display. Exclude account, checkout, cart, dashboard, and progress URLs from page caching, and test after every caching change.

Separate large media when usage grows

  • Compress and properly size images before uploading them.
  • Use captions and transcripts for video, and provide downloadable alternatives where appropriate.
  • Consider a dedicated video delivery or streaming service when the course library or concurrent viewing load would strain the WordPress server.
  • Monitor PHP workers, memory, database size, storage, response time, failed background jobs, and bandwidth rather than relying on a single page-speed score.
  • Increase capacity before a launch campaign, not after learners report timeouts.

Test the complete learner journey before launch

  1. Open the public landing page in a private browser window and confirm that course details and pricing are accurate.
  2. Create a new learner account, complete email verification if enabled, log out, and recover the password.
  3. Complete a test checkout with a successful payment and verify the exact enrollment and confirmation email.
  4. Attempt a failed payment, cancellation, refund, and subscription renewal scenario in the gateway’s test environment.
  5. Enter the course as the learner, complete lessons in the required order, fail and retake a quiz, and confirm progress persistence after logging out.
  6. Complete the final requirement and verify certificate generation, displayed name, date, and download or verification behavior.
  7. Repeat the critical path on a phone and a desktop browser with caching enabled as it will be in production.
  8. Check administrator logs, email delivery, backup restoration, and privacy-request procedures.

Troubleshoot common launch failures

Symptom Likely cause Action
Course pages return 404 errors Permalinks or rewrite rules were not refreshed Open Settings > Permalinks, save without changing the structure, then confirm the server supports the LMS-required rewrite configuration.
Students see an empty dashboard after payment Enrollment callback, redirect, or cache served stale content Inspect the transaction and enrollment record, exclude account and dashboard pages from cache, and retest with a new account.
Quiz completion does not unlock the next lesson Passing score, prerequisite, completion trigger, or attempt rule is inconsistent Review the rule chain, complete a fresh test attempt, and verify which event marks the quiz complete.
Emails do not arrive Host mail limits, incorrect sender settings, or missing authenticated delivery Check LMS email settings and server logs, send to more than one provider, and configure a reliable transactional mail service.
Pages are slow only for logged-in users Insufficient PHP workers or memory, uncached dynamic queries, or oversized media Measure dashboard and course requests separately, disable unsafe page caching, optimize media, and ask the host about worker and database capacity.
Certificate appears before requirements are met Certificate attached to the wrong trigger or a completion URL is exposed Bind issuance to the final course or quiz rule, remove direct links, and test with an incomplete account.
Updates break a course Plugin, theme, PHP, or integration incompatibility Restore the backup if necessary, reproduce on staging, update one component at a time, and check the LMS support notes before returning to production.

Operate the site after launch

Assign ownership for course editing, learner support, payment reconciliation, privacy requests, and technical maintenance. Keep a change log for LMS, WordPress, PHP, theme, gateway, email, analytics, and video updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Take verified backups before updates and periodically perform a restoration test.
  • Review failed payments, abandoned checkouts, enrollment mismatches, quiz anomalies, and email bounces on a defined schedule.
  • Audit administrator accounts and integrations at least whenever staff responsibilities change.
  • Review course links, downloadable files, captions, certificates, and mobile layouts after major updates.
  • Watch capacity as enrollment and concurrent viewing rise; upgrade hosting or separate media delivery before learner-facing degradation.

A WordPress LMS succeeds when the content model, account flow, infrastructure, and operating procedures agree. Build and test those four layers together, then expand the catalog only after a complete learner can register, pay, learn, pass, and receive the promised outcome without staff intervention.
