To create an app folder on a Samsung Galaxy phone, touch and hold one app icon on the Home or Apps screen, drag it onto another app, and release. Name the folder, then add more apps with its Add apps or plus button—or drag them into the folder.
Create a folder from the Home or Apps screen
- Open the screen with your app icons. Start on Home, or swipe up or down from Home to open the Apps screen. The gesture can vary with your phone’s navigation setup. See Samsung’s instructions for accessing and organizing Galaxy apps.
- Drag one app onto another. Touch and hold an app icon, drag it over a second app icon, and release. The new folder contains both apps.
- Name the folder. Tap the name field, enter a label such as “Travel” or “Social,” and tap Done on the keyboard if that button appears.
- Choose a color if you want. Tap the folder’s palette or color control. Its appearance and location can differ by device.
Add apps and move the folder
Add more apps
Open the folder and tap Add apps or the plus icon. Select the apps and confirm. You can also touch and hold an app icon and drag it into the folder.

Move the folder or add it to Home
Touch and hold the folder, then drag it to a new position. On Samsung’s US instructions, an Apps-screen folder can also be added to Home; this creates a Home-screen shortcut while the folder remains on the Apps screen. See Samsung’s Home-screen organization instructions.
Remove an app or delete a folder
To take one app out, open the folder, touch and hold the app, then choose Remove if that option appears. Samsung says the app returns to its original Home or Apps screen location; it is not uninstalled. Deleting a folder returns its apps to the Apps screen.

Removing an app from a folder and uninstalling it are different actions. Use the phone’s app-uninstall controls if you intend to delete an app from the device.
If dragging does not create a folder
Some Galaxy software offers another route. Samsung Australia’s Galaxy S26 instructions, last updated August 10, 2026, describe touching and holding an app, choosing Select, selecting the apps to group, and tapping Create folder. Samsung notes that screens and settings can vary by model, carrier, software version, and region. Its Japanese instructions specifically cover One UI Home and caution that device and Android versions may change labels or placement. Folder behavior is not identical across every Samsung interface. Samsung Japan’s One UI Home guidance says folders cannot be nested, left empty, or contain only one app. Samsung Canada says a folder needs at least two apps and dissolves if one app is removed from a two-app folder, leaving the shortcuts separately on screen.
