To run tabletop RPG session VODs as an always-on YouTube livestream, assemble recordings and assets you have permission to rebroadcast, send them to YouTube through a local or cloud encoder, and decide in advance how you will rotate broadcasts to protect individual archives. A single broadcast that runs longer than 12 hours may not be archived at all, so a continuous feed and reliable session-by-session VODs need separate planning.
Plan the content and rights before streaming
Make a playlist from session recordings that your channel is entitled to rebroadcast. Check that the permissions cover the recording itself and all included material: player and guest contributions, music, artwork, overlays, and other third-party content. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for obtaining necessary rights, including music licensing rights, on the content provider: YouTube livestream terms and conditions.

- Confirm that every participant’s release or agreement permits ongoing public rebroadcast, not merely the original session upload.
- Check music and other licensed assets for livestream use. A license does not necessarily prevent automated detection; a rights holder may need to allowlist your channel.
- Label the stream and its description clearly as session replays, and make your role in the recordings clear.
Permission to use material and eligibility for YouTube monetization are separate questions. YouTube applies its monetization policies to live streams and may find repetitive or mass-produced content ineligible; permission alone does not settle whether a channel meets reused-content requirements. Review the YouTube channel monetization policies before building a monetized channel around repeated VOD playback.
Choose where the encoder will run
Local encoder
A software or hardware encoder on your own computer sends the video feed to YouTube. The computer, playback process, encoder, power, and internet connection must remain available for the locally generated feed to continue. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key to connect the encoder to the stream. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder for current Studio steps and encoder guidance.

Cloud encoder
A hosted encoder can play uploaded files or a playlist without keeping a home computer in the broadcast path. Compare supported file formats, playlist and loop controls, monitoring, archive rotation, data retention, price, and service availability. Cloud services differ: the way broadcast and archive management works depends on the provider and its integration. A continuous feed should not be assumed to create a separate YouTube archive for every session automatically.
Enable livestreaming and connect the feed
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See Get started with live streaming.
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a stream. Select the stream’s title, visibility, and other settings in the Live Control Room. Choose privacy deliberately: a public stream is discoverable, while an unlisted or private stream has different access and sharing behavior.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream setup, obtain the YouTube server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to that stream. Do not include it in public notes, screenshots, or stream descriptions.
- Configure the encoder. Paste the server URL and key into the encoder’s YouTube connection settings. Select the cleared playlist or media file and configure the encoder’s output to match the source and your connection capacity. YouTube’s encoder guide is the authority for the current settings it accepts; do not assume one bitrate or resolution fits every source and upload connection.
- Start the encoder feed and verify it in Live Control Room. Wait for YouTube to detect the incoming signal, check the preview and status indicators, and then start the broadcast as prompted by Studio or your encoder workflow. Confirm playback on the public or test viewing page before leaving the stream unattended.
Design the loop and archive rotation
For an ordinary Studio-created broadcast, YouTube may automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. This is a platform limit to plan around, not a promise that every shorter archive will be retained forever. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. See Archive live streams.

Set viewer expectations for pausing and rewinding
Enable DVR if you want viewers to pause or rewind during the current broadcast. DVR can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek earlier than the start of the current broadcast. Ending and starting a new broadcast for archive rotation also gives the next session replay a new start point. Details are in Turn on DVR on live streams.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If detected material remains in the stream, YouTube may interrupt or terminate it. Even when you have a license, a rights holder may need to allowlist your channel for the stream to proceed without interruption. Archived broadcasts can also receive Content ID claims after they finish. Check the Live Control Room for warnings and review claims on completed VODs; see Copyright issues with live streams.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a livestream | Live streaming is not enabled yet, the channel is unverified, or a restriction applies. | Check eligibility and channel status in YouTube Studio. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation and verify there has been no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. |
| YouTube does not detect the encoder feed | The server URL or stream key is missing, incorrect, or for a different stream. | Copy the connection details from the intended Studio stream again, update the encoder, and confirm it is sending to the correct destination. |
| The stream stops when nobody is at the computer | A local playback process, encoder, computer, power supply, or home internet connection has stopped. | Check the full local signal chain and its power and network continuity, or use a cloud encoder if you do not want the home computer and connection in the path. |
| A long stream has no replay | The broadcast ran beyond YouTube’s 12-hour archive boundary, where capture is not guaranteed. | Rotate the broadcast before that point for session VODs and retain a separate recording or source-file backup. |
| Viewers cannot rewind far enough | DVR may be limited on a stream longer than 12 hours; it cannot go before the current broadcast began. | Enable DVR where appropriate and set expectations about the current broadcast’s start time. Use distinct broadcasts if viewers need separate replay start points. |
| The broadcast is interrupted by a copyright warning | YouTube detected third-party content, or the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel. | Review the warning, remove or replace material you cannot use, and contact the rights holder about allowlisting if you have the required license. |
| A finished replay receives a claim | Content ID can claim archived video after the live broadcast ends. | Review the claim and the relevant rights for the affected material; do not assume that a stream completing without interruption means the archive is claim-free. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home internet connection do not have to stay on; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. It does not remove the need to clear rights or plan YouTube archives: keep your session recordings and channel policies in order. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
