To stream a podcast WAV file on YouTube Live, load it into an OBS Studio Media Source, add cover art or another visual, connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream, then test the preview before going live. OBS supports WAV playback and looping; YouTube supplies the stream URL and key in YouTube Studio. The steps below cover a one-time episode and a repeating or multi-file show.
Before you start
- A finished podcast WAV file saved locally.
- OBS Studio and a still image for cover art, if you want a visual. You do not need a camera or special capture hardware for this setup; YouTube says you can start with equipment you already have (YouTube live-streaming tips).
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s general eligibility guidance also says creators must be at least 16. Check current eligibility for your account at YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility page.
- A stable upload connection able to sustain your chosen stream settings.
Choose how the event should work
Decide whether the WAV should play once or repeat, whether the scene needs only cover art or a more involved visual, and who should be able to watch. A scheduled stream is useful when you want a shareable URL and viewer reminders. YouTube lets you choose the event’s visibility in YouTube Studio; select public, private, or unlisted according to your audience and sharing needs (YouTube encoder setup).
Create the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create, then Go live.
- In Live Control Room, choose the Stream tab to create an encoder stream. To schedule it, use Manage and schedule the event.
- Set the title, description, visibility, and other event details. If scheduled, copy the event URL to share with viewers.
- Keep the stream key private: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your stream. You will enter the stream URL and key in OBS in a later step.
Exact interface labels can change, so follow the current controls shown in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current workflow.
Build the podcast scene in OBS
Add the WAV file
- Open OBS and create a scene for the podcast stream.
- In the scene’s Sources area, choose + and add a Media Source.
- Select the local WAV file. OBS documents WAV support for Media Sources (OBS Media Sources).
- Enable Loop only if you want the episode to start again automatically when it reaches the end. Leave it disabled for a one-time play.
Add cover art or another visual
- In Sources, choose + and add an Image Source.
- Select a local image file, such as the podcast’s cover art, then position and size it in the preview.
- Arrange the image and any other sources so the scene looks the way you want viewers to see it. OBS documents local images as an Image Source; animated visuals or audio visualizers require their own setup (OBS Image Sources, OBS Sources Guide).
For one episode, a single Media Source is the simplest setup. If you want several files to play as a playlist, OBS documents VLC Video as a playlist source and notes that it requires VLC. This is an optional route for multiple files, not necessary for one WAV (OBS Media Sources).

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the event.
- In OBS, open Settings and go to Stream. Choose YouTube as the service if available, then enter the stream details provided by YouTube. If OBS offers a server field, use the server URL supplied for the event.
- Use RTMPS when the encoder connection settings allow it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP.
- Save the settings and confirm OBS reports that it is connected or streaming after you start the encoder.
Use the key for the intended event and do not post or share it. YouTube explains its stream connection workflow and RTMPS recommendation in encoder setup and encoder settings.
Choose output settings that your connection can sustain
YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR) for encoder streams. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds, with a maximum of four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are platform ingest recommendations, not guarantees that a particular computer or connection can sustain a stream.

| H.264 output example | YouTube Help recommended video bitrate | YouTube Help minimum video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 14 Mbps | not stated for this combination in the values above |
The bitrate figures are YouTube Help recommendations; the page does not state a publication year. A static cover-art scene may not need a high frame rate, but YouTube does not publish a podcast-specific preset. Choose an output your computer and upload connection can maintain. YouTube recommends testing the connection and leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom. Check the current recommendations at YouTube’s encoder settings page and network guidance.
Test, go live, and end the event
- Start the OBS stream and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
- Check that the image appears and the podcast audio is audible. YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to what you will use during the stream (encoder settings guidance).
- When the preview and stream health look right, select Go live in YouTube Live Control Room.
- While live, monitor audio, picture, stream health, and viewer messages. Monitoring headphones can help you hear issues, but they are optional.
- When the event is finished, end it in Live Control Room and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; longer streams may not be.
See YouTube’s streaming tips for its monitoring guidance and encoder setup for ending a stream.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not accept the stream: confirm that the channel meets current live eligibility, and check that OBS has the correct event’s stream URL and key. If the key was exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- The preview has no audio: verify the Media Source points to the intended WAV and is not muted; check the OBS audio meters and listen to the YouTube preview before going live.
- The WAV plays only once: turn on Loop in the Media Source if repetition is intended. Leave it off when the episode should end.
- The preview is blank or shows the wrong image: confirm the Image Source file is available and visible in the scene, then check source order and framing in OBS.
- The stream buffers or drops frames: lower the output resolution or bitrate, use a more stable connection, and retest. YouTube recommends leaving upload headroom rather than using the entire measured upload rate.
- Audio and image do not start together: send another test, check the preview before the public event, and adjust the source setup in OBS. The cited platform guides do not specify a universal WAV synchronization setting.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Only stream audio and visuals you own or are licensed to use, including music, samples, artwork, and any clips in the episode. A live broadcast can be subject to YouTube’s copyright and policy enforcement. A successful stream setup does not establish that a podcast is eligible for monetization or exempt from reused-content rules; review the current YouTube policies that apply to your channel and content before scheduling an event.
