To schedule a YouTube Live event for a podcast, open YouTube Studio → Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule stream. Add the event details and visibility, then connect an encoder with the stream URL and key shown in Live Control Room. When the encoder preview appears, click Go live.
Scheduling creates a shareable event page and lets viewers set reminders; it does not keep a podcast running continuously by itself. Plan separately for encoder uptime, reconnection, monitoring and recording. In particular, YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as archives, so a 24-hour broadcast needs a local recording backup.

Before scheduling: check channel eligibility
Confirm the channel is ready well before the planned event. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and its current help guidance says creators must be at least 16. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do not wait until broadcast day. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.

- Check for restrictions that could prevent the channel from going live.
- Prepare the podcast audio and video source, an encoder, and a reliable upload connection. A microphone may be useful for production, but YouTube does not require a particular microphone or encoder product.
Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, open Manage and select Schedule stream.
- Choose whether to create a new event or reuse settings from a previous stream.
- Enter the event details and choose its visibility. Scheduling creates a watch page you can share in advance, and viewers can set reminders. Follow YouTube’s instructions for scheduling a live stream for the current interface.
- Save the scheduled event and copy its watch-page URL for promotion.
Connect an encoder and go live
Use the event’s stream URL and key
In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. The key identifies where the encoder sends its feed; treat it like a password. Do not share it publicly, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed. YouTube explains the connection flow in its encoder setup guide.

Test before the scheduled start
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Send representative audio and video, then check the Live Control Room preview and confirm the watch page works on desktop and mobile. Monitor audio and video quality rather than assuming a successful connection means the whole feed is healthy.
Start and end deliberately
- Start the encoder so it sends the feed.
- Wait for the preview in Live Control Room and verify picture and sound.
- Click Go live to begin the scheduled broadcast.
- At the planned end, click End Stream and stop the encoder feed.
Keep a local recording running and check that the file is actually growing. This gives you a recovery copy if the live connection or YouTube archive fails.

Choose stream quality and viewer settings
Encoder protocol, codecs and keyframes
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted version of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for video ingestion, and AAC or MP3 for audio. Use constant bitrate encoding and set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Refer to YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrates for bitrate ranges by resolution, codec and frame rate. There is no single bitrate that suits every output: choose one appropriate to your resolution and frame rate, then ensure the upload connection can sustain it reliably. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into formats for viewers.
DVR and latency
DVR allows viewers to pause and rewind a live stream. Decide whether that suits a continuously running podcast and check the DVR setting in Live Control Room. Latency determines how long the feed takes to reach viewers; lower latency can increase buffering. If the podcast is not interacting with viewers, low latency may matter less than stable playback.

What a 24/7 podcast needs beyond a scheduled event
YouTube’s documented workflow is for scheduled encoder-based streams; it does not describe a special 24/7 podcast event mode. Creating an event does not guarantee uninterrupted broadcasting. A continuous operation needs a plan for encoder supervision, connection loss, recovery or failover, and recording.
Plan for interruptions and archiving
- Test how the encoder behaves after a network drop or restart, and test any failover process before relying on it.
- Monitor the stream and the local recording for stalled video, missing audio or a stopped file.
- Keep a local recording backup. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on one 24-hour broadcast producing a complete YouTube archive.
- For a long-running feed, decide how you will restore the broadcast and preserve continuity if the encoder or connection fails.
These safeguards are operating decisions, not guarantees of continuous availability. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing encoder failover and checking the local archive; it does not promise uninterrupted service for a 24/7 feed. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
