You can keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running from Linux by having FFmpeg send the video to YouTube Live and letting systemd supervise the FFmpeg process. First confirm a manual stream works; then run that same command as a restricted system service, enable it at boot, and check both systemd logs and YouTube’s Live Control Room. systemd can restart an exited process, but it cannot fix a bad stream key, missing media, a broken network, or a broadcast that YouTube has ended.
What systemd can—and cannot—keep running
There are three separate states to check: FFmpeg is running on your Linux host; YouTube is receiving its feed; and the broadcast is showing a preview or live, healthy state in YouTube Live Control Room. A systemd service manages the local process. Its restart policy can respond when that process exits, but a process that remains alive while sending unusable output may not trigger a restart.

This approach is suited to prerecorded video or audio that you want to send as a live stream. The Linux host, media files, FFmpeg command, network connection, and YouTube broadcast all remain dependencies. A service does not make a stream literally uninterrupted or guarantee that YouTube will keep a broadcast live indefinitely.

Enable live streaming on the channel
Your channel must have live streaming enabled before an encoder can send a broadcast. YouTube Help says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check the current instructions in YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Create a stream and retrieve its connection details
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select a live stream.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Use those values in the FFmpeg output settings. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, commit it to a repository, or print it in logs or transcripts.
If you created a scheduled stream, starting FFmpeg may only produce a preview. Check Live Control Room and use its go-live action when the preview is ready. YouTube documents the encoder workflow and the scheduled-stream preview step on its live-stream setup page.
Prepare media and a persistent host
Put the media in a stable location with permissions that the service account can read. For an always-on self-hosted stream, the Linux machine must stay powered on and connected. A VPS is one possible host; assess sustained CPU needs, storage, transfer limits, network location, and total recurring cost before choosing one. A community Ubuntu VPS example documents a continuous FFmpeg pipeline, but its file paths, codecs, command flags, and results are specific to that project rather than universal settings: 24/7 YouTube Stream — Setup & Ops Notes.

Make the FFmpeg command work before automating it
First run FFmpeg interactively with your actual media and YouTube’s current server URL and stream key. For prerecorded content, the command needs to read or loop the intended input and send a compatible audio/video feed to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. The exact command depends on the source files and encoding choices; the cited community example is not a universal command template, and the available material does not establish one set of codec, bitrate, resolution, or keyframe values for every stream.

Run the encoder under systemd
Create a dedicated service account and directory
Use a dedicated unprivileged Linux account for the encoder rather than running it as root. Ensure that account can read the media and any required configuration, but does not have unnecessary access to the rest of the system. Choose a stable working directory and use explicit paths in the command so the service does not depend on an interactive shell’s environment.
Write a service unit for your working command
Create a system service unit, for example at /etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service. Adapt the account name, working directory, input paths, environment, and FFmpeg command to your system and the command you already verified manually. A typical unit’s key directives look like this:

This is a skeleton, not a copy-and-run FFmpeg command: replace the bracketed text with the verified arguments and confirm the FFmpeg binary path on your distribution. Do not put a real stream key into a publicly readable unit file or a repository. Restrict access to any file or environment configuration that holds it, and ensure the service can read that configuration without exposing it to unrelated users. Be aware that secrets placed directly in process arguments may be visible to local users through process inspection.

Choose restart behavior deliberately
Restart=on-failure tells systemd to restart after qualifying failures, which is generally a more cautious starting policy for an encoder than restarting after every clean exit. Restart=always also restarts after a clean exit, so use it only if that behavior matches the intended lifecycle. Neither policy tests whether YouTube is receiving valid media or whether the broadcast is still live. The systemd project documents service startup targets and restart behavior in its startup-target documentation and service restart implementation.

Load, enable, and start the service
- After saving the unit, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadso systemd reads it. - Run
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.serviceto enable it for its configured boot target and start it now. - Run
systemctl status youtube-stream.serviceto inspect the local service state. - Run
journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -fto follow its journal output. Check for FFmpeg errors without copying secrets into shared logs or support messages. - Open YouTube Live Control Room and verify that the stream has a preview or is live. Repeat this check after a restart or host reboot.
Enabling a service makes systemd start it through the configured boot target; it does not by itself prove the host has booted with working networking, readable media, valid credentials, or a healthy YouTube broadcast.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect and recover the stream key
A YouTube stream key grants access to the stream’s ingest connection. Limit read access to wherever the service needs it, keep it out of source control, and do not paste it into issue reports or public terminal transcripts. The cited public implementation specifically warns against committing the key to a repository. If the key is exposed, rotate it in YouTube Studio and update the protected configuration used by the service before restarting the encoder.
Troubleshoot by checking each layer
- Service fails immediately: use
systemctl status youtube-stream.serviceandjournalctl -u youtube-stream.service. Check the unit syntax, FFmpeg binary path, account permissions, working directory, and input paths. - FFmpeg runs but YouTube shows no preview: confirm the stream server URL and key match the selected stream, the channel is enabled for live streaming, and the host can reach the ingest endpoint. Inspect FFmpeg’s connection and output errors in the journal.
- Preview appears but the scheduled broadcast is not live: check Live Control Room for the scheduled stream’s status and complete its go-live action if required.
- Service restarts repeatedly: inspect the journal for the underlying exit cause before changing the restart policy. Repeated restarts do not repair missing or unreadable media, invalid credentials, or unavailable network access.
- systemd says active but the broadcast is unhealthy: treat the service state only as evidence that the local process is active. Verify the YouTube preview/live status separately and investigate the ingest and media output.
- Stream stops after a reboot: confirm the unit is enabled, the correct boot target is in use, and network, storage, permissions, and credentials are available when the service starts.
Understand YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That threshold describes archiving behavior; it is not evidence that a single broadcast can run forever or that a particular restart schedule is required. Check YouTube’s current encoder and live-stream guidance for the broadcast workflow.
