How to Create a Visual Website Directory with Screenshot Previews

A practical guide to structuring website listings, capturing consistent previews with Playwright, rendering accessible linked cards, and keeping a growing directory fast and discoverable.

Build a visual website directory by storing each listing as a structured record, generating a consistent screenshot for it, and rendering that preview inside a real link to the destination. Use thumbnail-sized images, descriptive accessible labels, and stable pages for large collections so the directory remains fast to browse and easy for crawlers to discover.

Plan the directory around destination records

A screenshot is a preview, not a replacement for the website link. Keep each listing’s information together so you can update its image or destination without rebuilding the directory by hand.

Choose fields that support browsing and maintenance

A practical record can include a canonical destination URL, display name, short description, category, tags, screenshot file or URL, capture date, and capture status or error. This is an implementation choice, not a schema required by Playwright or Google.

  • Normalize URLs and decide how you will handle redirects, duplicate domains, and sites that cannot be reached.
  • Keep a stable destination URL for each listing; link the card to the website, not to its screenshot file.
  • Record when an image was captured so you can identify stale previews and refresh them intentionally.

Decide what the preview should show

Use the same viewport and capture approach for comparable cards. A viewport screenshot gives each listing a consistent first-screen preview; a full-page capture is more appropriate when the complete page is itself the point of the preview. Avoid mixing these without a clear reason, since the resulting cards may differ in scale and readability.

Generate previews with Playwright

Playwright can save a page screenshot to a file and supports full-page screenshots and configurable output. Its Screenshots documentation shows the basic file-capture pattern; the Page API documents additional screenshot options, including animation handling and masks.

Install the browser automation package

For a Node.js project, install Playwright and its browser binaries:

npm install -D playwright
npx playwright install chromium

Run browser capture in a controlled environment where the process is allowed to access the target site. Websites may redirect, block automation, load slowly, or require interaction, so handle navigation failures instead of assuming every URL will produce an image.

Capture a viewport preview

Save this as capture.mjs. It accepts a destination URL and output path, uses a fixed viewport for comparable cards, waits for the page to load, and records failures through the process exit code.

const [url, outputPath] = process.argv.slice(2);
if (!url || !outputPath) {
  console.error('Usage: node capture.mjs <url> <output.png>');
  process.exit(2);
}

const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage({
    viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 },
    deviceScaleFactor: 1
  });
  const response = await page.goto(url, {
    waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
    timeout: 30000
  });
  if (!response || !response.ok()) {
    throw new Error(`Navigation did not return a successful response${response ? `: ${response.status()}` : ''}`);
  }
  await page.screenshot({ path: outputPath, type: 'png' });
  console.log(`Saved ${outputPath}`);
} catch (error) {
  console.error(`Could not capture ${url}:`, error.message);
  process.exitCode = 1;
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Run it with node capture.mjs https://example.com previews/example.png, creating the output directory first if it does not exist. The fixed viewport makes captures more consistent, but a page can still render differently based on its content, network conditions, consent prompts, or access rules. Choose a wait condition that matches your goal: domcontentloaded is a starting point, not a guarantee that every image or client-rendered element is ready.

Capture the entire page when that is useful

Change the screenshot call to await page.screenshot({ path: outputPath, fullPage: true, type: 'png' });. Full-page images can be very tall and make small card previews difficult to read. Consider generating a separate thumbnail derivative for the directory while retaining a larger capture only when readers need it.

Make captures repeatable

  • Set a common viewport, device scale, output format, and capture timing for listings in the same collection.
  • Use a predictable filename derived from a stable listing identifier rather than an untrusted URL string.
  • Capture failures as status information in the record; retry them under a deliberate policy rather than silently publishing broken image paths.
  • Refresh previews on a schedule or when a listing changes, and update the record’s capture date after a successful replacement.

Render cards as accessible, crawlable links

Use an HTML <img> for a screenshot that conveys the listed site’s appearance. Google says it can discover images through an image element’s src; CSS background imagery is not the recommended path for image indexing. Its image guidance also discusses responsive images, alt text, supported formats, and the balance between image quality and page speed.

Example card markup

<article class="directory-card">
  <a href="https://example.com" aria-label="Visit Example site">
    <img
      src="/previews/example-640.webp"
      srcset="/previews/example-320.webp 320w, /previews/example-640.webp 640w"
      sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 320px"
      width="640"
      height="400"
      alt="Preview of the Example site homepage"
    >
    <h2>Example</h2>
  </a>
  <p>A short description of what the site offers.</p>
</article>

Replace the sample destinations and image paths with values from your records. Ensure the rendered image URL is valid and its dimensions or aspect ratio reserve the intended card space. When the image and title are inside the same link, avoid a verbose alt description that repeats the link name; choose an alt treatment that identifies the preview without making the link announcement confusing. Google’s link guidance explains that descriptive anchor text helps users and crawlers, and that an image’s alt text can serve as anchor text when the image is linked.

Serve suitable image sizes

Generate thumbnail-sized derivatives for cards instead of making every visitor download a full-resolution capture. Use srcset and sizes, or a <picture> element where it helps provide responsive variants, while retaining a fallback src. Choose a format and compression level that keeps text and recognizable page details legible at the actual displayed size. Google’s guidance notes that image weight can contribute substantially to page size and recommends responsive image techniques and optimization.

Keep listings findable as the directory grows

Use ordinary semantic links with an href for each destination, and give individual directory content a stable URL. Google’s developer guide describes crawlable links, semantic HTML, sitemaps, and the need for individual URLs for content in JavaScript applications.

Paginate large collections

For a long directory, use pages or chunks with persistent, unique URLs and links between them. Google’s guidance on lazy loading, last updated December 10, 2025, recommends a stable URL for each chunk, consistent content at each URL, sequential links, and updating the visible URL through the History API when an infinite-scroll interface moves through chunks.

Search and filters can make a directory easier to use, but do not make listings available only after an interaction that crawlers cannot perform. Google does not interact with a page to trigger content such as a click or scroll. Provide crawlable paths to important entries and ensure content is present in the rendered page as intended.

Lazy-load only below-the-fold previews

Set loading="lazy" on images that begin below the initial viewport. Do not lazy-load previews likely to be visible immediately when the page opens, since that can delay their display. Confirm that each image URL appears in the rendered src attribute and that the image loads when it becomes visible without requiring a user action.

Decide between in-house capture and a managed API

Playwright gives you control over browser setup, viewport, page state, and capture options, but you also operate the browser runtime and your own batch and retry process. A managed screenshot service can reduce some infrastructure work, but compare providers against your actual needs rather than assuming a particular service, limit, or price applies universally.

  • Capture control: viewport dimensions, full-page behavior, output format, and the ability to set the state before capture.
  • Batch operations: how many URLs can be submitted and how failures, blocks, and retries are handled.
  • Output and delivery: resolution, file size, thumbnail quality, storage, caching, and image delivery.
  • Operations and cost: browser installation and updates, capture infrastructure, usage limits, and the provider’s current pricing.

For either approach, retain capture status and dates so failed or stale previews can be addressed without confusing them with current images. Image storage and CDN choices depend on your hosting and delivery requirements; no single vendor or framework is necessary for this design.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One request can return an image or PDF; its cleanup can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step optional. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.

Use an API key in place of YOUR_API_KEY and replace the target URL with a directory entry. Save the response as an image file, then create the card-sized derivatives and records your directory needs. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Troubleshoot common capture and directory problems

The capture times out or fails to load

The target may be slow, unavailable, redirecting, or blocking automated access. Check the destination in a normal browser, verify the URL and network access from the capture environment, and use a longer timeout only when a slow load is expected. Record the failure and retry selectively rather than publishing a nonexistent preview.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The screenshot is blank or missing important content

The capture may have happened before client-rendered content or images appeared, or the page may have returned a challenge or empty response. Choose a wait condition that matches the page, and where necessary wait for a known selector before capture. Inspect the saved image and store a failed or incomplete status instead of marking the listing successful.

Cards look inconsistent or text is unreadable

Confirm that related listings use the same viewport and capture mode. Full-page captures can shrink into unreadable card images; create a smaller crop or thumbnail suited to the card and link to the site itself. If the directory needs to show a particular area, capture that area consistently rather than varying the crop site by site.

Images are broken or the directory feels slow

Check the rendered src paths and ensure the files are actually deployed at those locations. Serve appropriately sized image variants, reserve card dimensions to reduce layout movement, and lazy-load only previews below the initial viewport. Keep a fallback image or explicit unavailable state for listings with capture errors.

Listings are not reachable through crawling or navigation

Make sure each entry has a standard <a href> destination and each paginated chunk has its own stable URL with sequential links. Do not depend on a filter, click, or scroll action as the sole way to reveal important listings. A sitemap can supplement the directory’s links, but it does not replace useful navigation.
