Use a viewport image for page context, a selected area or element for a focused detail, and a full-page image when the complete page matters.
Plan what the appendix needs to show
Before capturing anything, list the pages or page states that belong in the appendix. For each one, decide what evidence the reader needs and record the page title and source URL. Keep the original image if you may need to crop, revise, or recapture it later.

- Visible viewport: shows what a visitor sees in the current browser view, including surrounding page context.
- Selected area: isolates a portion of the current view when the rest of the page is not relevant.
- Single element: focuses on a particular page component.
- Full page: includes content beyond the visible browser area, useful for documenting a long page.
A full-page image is not interchangeable with a viewport screenshot: the images have different dimensions and communicate different things. Choose the capture that supports the point you are making, then check whether its text will remain legible on a slide.

Chrome DevTools provides options for capturing the visible viewport and a full-size page in Device Mode. The DevTools Command Menu can capture a selected area, and the Elements panel can capture an individual DOM node. Chrome documents these methods in its Device Mode guide, Command Menu guide, and DOM guide.

Capture the visible viewport or full page
- Open the website in Chrome and navigate to the page or state you want to document.
- Open Chrome DevTools and enable Device Mode.
- Choose the visible-viewport capture when the current browser view and surrounding context matter. Choose the full-size capture when you need content beyond the viewport.
- Save the screenshot to your computer, using a filename that identifies the page or appendix figure.
Capture a selected area
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Open the DevTools Command Menu and run the area-capture command.
- Select the portion of the page that belongs in the appendix, then save the resulting image.
Area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked from the browser window, according to Chrome’s Command Menu documentation. If the command does not capture the selection, dock DevTools and try again.
Capture one page element
- In DevTools, use the Elements panel to select the DOM node you want to document.
- Use the node screenshot option for the selected element.
- Save the image and note what the element represents.
Use a node capture when the component itself is the evidence. If the surrounding page is needed to explain where it appears, capture the viewport as well.

Insert the screenshots into Google Slides
- Open the presentation and select the slide where the image belongs.
- Choose Insert > Image.
- Choose the computer-upload option for a screenshot saved locally, then select the image and click Insert or Open.
- Resize and position the image on the slide. Add a caption that identifies the page or state and explains what the image shows.
Google lists additional image sources, including Drive and Photos, camera, and URL; available choices can vary with the interface and account context. Its image insertion help describes the insertion flow. Slides also supports dragging and dropping an image to replace an existing image.
Keep screenshots readable and easy to follow
- Use one screenshot per slide when the page text needs to be read at presentation size.
- Put two screenshots side by side only when the details remain legible and the comparison is useful.
- Keep image sizing, caption style, and figure numbering consistent.
- Order images according to the explanation or the site’s page sequence, rather than making readers infer the intended order.
- If a full-page image is too tall to read, split it into meaningful sections or pair an overview with detail captures. State when an image is cropped or selectively captured.
To align or distribute slide objects, use Slides’ arrangement controls. Google describes arranging, aligning, distributing, ordering, and centering objects in its object arrangement help.

Review the appendix before sharing
- Check that each image is legible at the size it will appear during the presentation.
- Confirm captions match the screenshots and identify what each one demonstrates.
- Make sure the order makes sense without requiring readers to guess at the connection between slides.
- Verify the presentation’s sharing settings allow the intended audience to view it.

If you insert images through the Google Slides API rather than manually in the Slides interface, Google’s API guide specifies that images must be under 50 MB, no larger than 25 megapixels, and in PNG, JPEG, or GIF format.
