Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo create a virtual disk in Windows 11, use Disk Management’s Action > Create VHD command and choose VHDX. To preserve a complete Hyper-V virtual machine, export the VM rather than copying only its disk. Moving that VM to another hypervisor may require a different disk format or an appliance export, and does not guarantee the same configuration will boot unchanged.
Choose what you need to preserve
A VHD or VHDX is a virtual hard disk: it stores disk data, but it is not a complete virtual machine. If you copy only the disk file, you are not also preserving the VM’s configuration or its checkpoint files.

For a Hyper-V VM, an export gathers its virtual hard disk files, configuration files, and checkpoint files into one unit. Microsoft documents exporting from Hyper-V Manager or with PowerShell. That makes an export the appropriate starting point when you want to preserve the VM as a VM, rather than just move a disk. An export is not, by itself, a complete backup policy or proof that a restore will work; plan to test importing it on the intended host.
Create a VHDX in Windows 11
Microsoft recommends VHDX and says virtual hard disks are designed primarily for Hyper-V. The Disk Management instructions apply to Windows 11. You need membership in the Backup Operators or Administrators group. Use a fully qualified storage location outside the Windows directory.

- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
- Open Disk Management with administrator permissions.
- Select Action > Create VHD.
- Enter the full path and filename for the virtual disk.
- Choose Virtual Disk files (*.vhdx), specify the virtual disk size, then select either Dynamically expanding or Fixed size.
- Confirm to create and initialize the disk.
A dynamically expanding disk grows as data is written, while a fixed-size disk allocates its configured size when created. Choose based on your storage plan and available host capacity; the documented guidance does not establish a universal performance advantage for either option. Microsoft’s wording is: “The VHD file type is .vhd or .vhdx (recommended).” Microsoft’s VHD management instructions include the full creation and attachment workflow.
Attach or detach a disk
To attach an existing file, open Disk Management and select Action > Attach VHD, then browse to the VHD or VHDX. Detaching makes the disk unavailable to Windows but does not delete the file or its contents.

Use the disk in a Hyper-V virtual machine
Hyper-V Manager and PowerShell can create a VM using either an existing virtual disk or a newly created one. The required guest operating system, VM generation, firmware, memory, processor, and network settings depend on the development target; there is no universal configuration established by the cited guidance. Microsoft’s New-VM reference includes an example that creates a VM with a new 40 GB VHDX. Treat that as a command example, not a recommended size for every project.
Back up the complete Hyper-V VM
To preserve the VM’s disk and its associated configuration and checkpoint files, use Hyper-V’s export function. Microsoft says the VM may be started or stopped during export.

- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
- In Hyper-V Manager, select the VM and choose Export, then specify the destination.
- Or run this PowerShell command, replacing the example values with the VM name and destination path:
Export-VM -Name <vm name> -Path <path> - Keep the export intact and, when possible, test importing it on the intended receiving host before relying on it.
Microsoft describes the result this way: “An export gathers all required files into one unit–virtual hard disk files, virtual machine configuration files, and any checkpoint files.” See Microsoft’s export and import instructions for the documented workflow. A separate copy of the export on an external drive can reduce dependence on the original storage location; no particular device or capacity is required by the guidance.
Check host compatibility when importing
Hyper-V import offers options to register the VM in place, restore or copy it to another location, or import a copy with a new ID. VM configuration versions constrain compatibility: a newer Hyper-V host can typically import a VM from an older host, but an older host cannot import a VM created on a newer one. Different host hardware may also require changes to memory, virtual switches, or virtual processors. Review the receiving host’s import options and adjust the VM before treating the migration as complete.

Plan for a different hypervisor
Cross-platform use involves two separate compatibility checks: whether the receiving hypervisor can read the virtual disk format, and whether it can import and run the VM’s configuration and virtual hardware. Support for a disk container does not establish that a whole VM will import or boot unchanged.

|---|---|---|
| VHDX created in Windows 11 | Microsoft recommends VHDX and describes VHDs as designed primarily for Hyper-V. Microsoft VHD guidance | Check whether the exact receiving hypervisor version supports VHDX and how it expects the VM configuration to be supplied. |
| VHD disk image in VirtualBox | Oracle VirtualBox 7.2 lists VHD among supported disk image formats; the same documentation lists VDI, VMDK, and HDD. It does not establish VHDX support. VirtualBox 7.2 storage documentation | Confirm the format and import workflow for the specific VirtualBox version. VHD support alone does not confirm that a Hyper-V VM configuration will transfer. |
| OVA between VirtualBox and VMware | A Broadcom article describes exporting an OVA from VirtualBox and importing it into VMware Fusion, Workstation, or Player. The product versions listed there are legacy. Broadcom’s migration article | Verify that the current versions of both products support the workflow before using it; the legacy instructions do not certify current compatibility. |
Oracle also lists VMDK as a supported VirtualBox image format and associates it with VMware use, but that does not certify configuration compatibility across every version. Before choosing a conversion route, identify the target hypervisor and version and consult its current import or conversion documentation.
