To create a transcript from a live stream, decide whether you need captions viewers can read during the broadcast or text saved for later. Set up live captions before you go on air; for a retained transcript, add or edit captions on the recording afterward. Live captions are not automatically the same thing as a downloadable transcript, and the exact workflow depends on the platform.
Choose between live captions and a saved transcript
- Live captions display speech as viewers watch. The platform must receive caption data during the broadcast, through an embedded caption track or a supported external feed.
- A saved transcript is text retained after the event for later reading, editing, or access. Some platforms manage this separately from live captions.
Before streaming, check whether your platform supports the caption input you plan to use, whether it retains a transcript, and which host or account permissions control access and downloads. Do not assume captions shown live will be available afterward.
Create captions during a YouTube Live stream
YouTube documents two live-caption approaches: captions embedded in the video and captions sent through supported software over HTTP. Configure the caption workflow before the event. YouTube currently supports one caption track per stream, although the underlying 608/708 standard allows up to four language tracks. YouTube’s live caption requirements list the supported setup details.
Option 1: Send embedded 608/708 captions
- Create or open the YouTube stream’s setup.
- Open Settings, then Setup, turn on Closed captions, choose Embedded 608/708, and save.
- Configure your encoder to send EIA 608/CEA 708 captions in the video stream.
- Test the caption output before the event, including the language and synchronization, using the encoder and captioning setup you will use live.
This route requires an encoder and caption source that can produce the format YouTube expects. If your setup cannot embed those captions, use a supported external caption workflow instead.

Option 2: Send captions through supported software
- Enable captions in the YouTube event setup.
- Copy the signed HTTP caption ingestion URL provided for the event.
- Give that URL to the captioner or configure it in compatible captioning software. YouTube lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net; check YouTube’s current requirements for product versions and compatibility.
- Verify that the caption feed reaches the correct stream entry point before the broadcast. Each stream entry point accepts one caption feed.
YouTube advises adding a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay for events using this captioning workflow. A delay can give captions time to catch up, but it also means the audience sees the stream later; account for that in event timing and interaction.
Add a transcript or captions to a YouTube recording
Once the stream recording is available, YouTube Studio offers a separate post-event caption workflow. Open YouTube Studio → Subtitles, select the video and language, then choose one of these approaches. The exact controls may vary as Studio changes. YouTube’s instructions for adding subtitles and captions describe the options.

Upload a timed caption file
Choose this when you already have captions with timing information. Upload a supported caption file containing the spoken text and timestamps. Depending on the format, a file can also include position or style information.
Auto-sync a transcript
Paste or enter transcript text in the spoken language and use YouTube’s auto-sync option to align it with the recording. YouTube does not recommend auto-sync for videos over one hour or for recordings with poor audio quality. Review the resulting timing before publishing.

Type captions manually
Enter captions in Studio and align them with the recording. This takes more editing time, but lets you correct wording and timing directly instead of relying on an automatic draft.
If automatic captions are available, YouTube says they are published in the video’s default language. For any automatically recognized text, check speaker names, specialist terms, numbers, and overlapping or fast speech. Recognition quality can vary with the speaker and content; the cited platform guidance does not establish a universal accuracy rate.

Other platform workflows
Twitch: provide captions through the broadcast setup
Twitch’s Guide to Closed Captions describes streamer captioning through embedded files or broadcast encoders. Twitch’s professional live-captioning service is described for Twitch-produced content; it should not be treated as a caption feature automatically available to every streamer.
A third-party OBS resource, Closed Captioning via Google Speech Recognition, describes a plugin that can generate captions for live streams and VODs and save captions as SRT subtitle files. The resource was last updated July 17, 2019, so check compatibility with your current OBS and Twitch setup before relying on it. Its recognition-quality notes warn that specialized vocabulary and hectic speech can reduce results; language and encoder limitations also apply. Treat generated captions as a draft to review, not a guaranteed transcript.

Zoom: enable meeting transcripts to retain speech-to-text
Zoom distinguishes live captions from retained meeting transcripts. Its FAQ for the May 2026 update says participants cannot save or download live captions as a post-meeting asset. To retain speech-to-text data, the host or administrator must enable meeting transcripts. Account settings determine transcript generation, retention, and who may view or download them. Check the current Zoom guidance on meeting captions and transcript updates for the controls available to your account.
Choose the workflow that fits the event
- Viewers need access during the broadcast: configure a platform-supported live caption feed before going live, and test it with the encoder or captioning software.
- You mainly need text afterward: check the platform’s retention and transcript settings, or create a caption track from the recording.
- The event has specialized terms, fast speech, or multiple speakers: plan time for human review; automatic recognition can mishear precisely these details.
- You need a downloadable or editable file: confirm the platform and workflow support the format and permissions you need. A visible caption feed does not by itself establish that a file will be retained.
- You need captions in a particular language: confirm the platform’s track limits and the language supported by your caption source before the event.
Troubleshoot common transcript problems
Captions do not appear on a YouTube Live stream
- Check that closed captions are enabled in the event setup and that the selected method matches what the encoder or caption software sends.
- For embedded captions, verify the encoder is sending EIA 608/CEA 708 data.
- For an HTTP caption feed, confirm the signed ingestion URL is current and configured for the correct stream entry point. YouTube allows one caption feed per entry point.
- Test before the live event; a setting change alone does not create caption data if the encoder or caption source is not sending it.
Live captions are delayed
For YouTube’s event captioning workflow, YouTube advises a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay. If captions still lag, check the captioner or software output and the stream’s timing; balance any additional delay against the audience experience.
The saved transcript has errors or poor timing
- Correct names, numbers, specialist vocabulary, and overlapping speech by comparing the text with the recording.
- If YouTube auto-sync produces poor alignment, use a timed caption file or edit captions manually. Auto-sync is not recommended for recordings over an hour or with poor audio.
- For third-party speech-recognition tools, check the software’s supported language and encoder setup, and verify compatibility with current platform versions.
You cannot download Zoom captions after the meeting
Under Zoom’s May 2026 guidance, live captions are not a post-meeting asset participants can save or download. Ask the host or administrator whether meeting transcripts were enabled and whether your account permissions allow access.
