How to Create a System Restore Point Before Changing the Registry

Create a Windows restore point before editing the registry, and learn when to add a separate export of the key and personal-file backup.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create a restore point before editing the Windows registry by opening Create a restore point, checking that System Protection is enabled for your Windows drive, and selecting Create. Give the point a description that identifies the change. For extra protection, export the specific registry key separately; neither safeguard replaces a backup of personal files.

Before you start

  • Save open work and make sure important personal files are backed up separately. System Restore is for recovering system state, not for backing up personal files.
  • Know the exact registry key and value you intend to change. Microsoft warns that an incorrect registry edit can cause instability, application errors, or prevent Windows from starting. Follow trusted instructions for that specific change.

Create the restore point

  1. Open Start, search for Create a restore point, and select the result. Alternatively, press Win+R, enter systempropertiesprotection.exe, and press Enter. Microsoft documents these System Protection steps.
  2. In System Properties > System Protection, find the drive where Windows is installed and check its protection status.
  3. If protection is off for that drive, select it and choose Configure. Select Turn on system protection, set the disk-space allocation, and select Apply. The amount of space available is configurable; Microsoft does not specify a universal minimum in its instructions.
  4. Return to the System Protection tab and select Create.
  5. Enter a description that identifies the change, such as Before changing [setting] registry value, then select Create. Wait for Windows to confirm that the restore point was created.

Add a targeted backup of the registry key

A restore point covers broader system state; a registry export is a separate copy of the selected key or subkey. To make one, open Registry Editor, select the key you plan to edit, and choose File > Export. Save the resulting .reg file somewhere you can find later. Microsoft explains how to export and import registry keys in its registry backup and restore guidance.

To apply an exported key later, open Registry Editor and choose File > Import, then select the saved .reg file. Use an export that corresponds to the specific key you need; it is not a substitute for a full system recovery point or a personal-file backup.

What System Restore can undo

Microsoft says System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs to the state they were in when the selected restore point was created. It does not affect personal files. However, restoring can undo relevant system changes made since the point, including changes involving applications, drivers, updates, or settings. You can review Scan for affected programs where that option is available before confirming a restore. See Microsoft’s System Restore guidance.

Restore Windows if a registry change causes trouble

If Windows starts normally

Open System Restore, select the restore point you created, and follow the prompts. Review the affected-program list if offered, then confirm only when you are ready for Windows to roll back the relevant system changes.

If Windows will not start normally

Enter the Windows Recovery Environment and go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. Select the restore point and follow the prompts. On an encrypted device, Windows may ask for the BitLocker recovery key. Microsoft describes System Restore in recovery options here.
