To create a superflat world, stop the Vintage Story server, set its world-generation type to superflat, assign a new world name, and start the server again. Generation settings are read when a world is first created; changing them later does not reshape an existing world. Back up your saves before deleting anything, and verify the exact configuration filename and key nesting against your server version.

What you need to know first
A superflat world is a new map generated with a flat-world setting rather than the settings used by a normal Vintage Story world. The important limitation is timing: world-creation options are consumed when the named world is generated. Editing the setting while that world already exists does not convert the existing terrain.

The reliable workflow is therefore:
- Stop the server completely.
- Open the server’s configuration file or hosting-panel settings.
- Set the world type to
superflat, checking the file for the keyWorldType. - Give the world a new name, or back up and remove the existing save so the server has to generate it again.
- Start the server and confirm that the new map was created.
The exact file name and JSON nesting are not identical in every guide or server installation. Some installations use data/serverconfig.json; another documented layout uses vintagestoryserver.json in the server directory. Treat those as possibilities, not universal paths. Your running Vintage Story version and hosting panel are the authority.
Before changing anything
Confirm that you have the right access
You need either file access to the server directory or a control panel that exposes world-generation settings. A normal in-game administrator account is not enough to safely edit a file while the process is running. If the provider manages the files for you, look for a server-settings, world-settings, or configuration section rather than editing an unrelated game-client file.

Schedule downtime
Stop the server from its control panel or service manager and wait until the process is fully stopped. Editing JSON while the server is writing it can leave an incomplete file, and deleting a save while the process is active can corrupt the world. Do not rely on a console window merely appearing idle; use the panel’s stopped state or the service’s confirmed termination.
Make a recoverable backup
Copy the complete save data to a separate location before changing the world name or deleting anything. The critical directory cited by hosting instructions is data/Saves/, but your installation may place the save directory differently. Preserve the original folder with its existing name and, if possible, record the date and server version in the backup name. A backup is the only straightforward way back if you remove the wrong save or discover that the new configuration is incompatible.
Record the current world name
Write down the current world name before editing. A name change is the least destructive way to make the server generate a second world while retaining the original files. It also gives you an easy rollback: stop the server, select the old name again, and start it after restoring the previous settings if your server version supports that workflow.
Why a new world is required
The official World Configuration guidance distinguishes between settings used at world creation and settings that can be changed afterward. Climate, world size, and polar-to-equator distance are examples of creation-time settings in that guidance. The same rule is the reason a world-type change does not flatten terrain that has already been generated.
There are two ways to force a fresh generation:

Changing only the world-type value while leaving the same generated world selected will normally start the old terrain again. The setting can be correct and the result can still look unchanged because no new generation was triggered.

Set the world type in a hosting panel
Use a built-in Super Flat option when available
Some game-server panels provide a world-type dropdown with an item labelled Super Flat or Superflat. Stop the server first, select that option, save the panel’s changes, and then change the world name before starting the server. A panel control is preferable to hand-editing JSON because it can place the value in the nesting expected by that provider’s current server build.

If the panel separates “world type” from “play style,” set only the former unless you intentionally want a different gameplay mode. One hosting guide recommends a creative-building style for superflat maps because they do not provide natural resources. That is a gameplay choice, not a requirement for generation.
Check the generated configuration after saving
After saving, open the configuration view if the panel permits it and search for WorldType. Confirm that the value is spelled superflat exactly as the panel represents it. Do not assume that a similarly named client setting controls the dedicated server.
Set the world type in the server files
Find the configuration file used by your installation
Hosting instructions commonly point to data/serverconfig.json. Another documented setup uses vintagestoryserver.json in the server’s main directory. Because the filenames conflict across sources, search the server directory for the file that contains your server’s world settings instead of renaming files or creating a second configuration from scratch.
Make a copy of the file before editing. Open it with a plain-text editor that preserves JSON punctuation and encoding. Avoid word processors, which can insert formatting characters that the server cannot parse.

Search for WorldType, not a presumed path
The documented examples do not agree on where the key lives. One places world settings inside a WorldConfiguration object written on first start; another uses a worldConfig section; a third shows "WorldType": "standard" as a top-level property. For that reason, look through your own file for the existing WorldType entry and change its value rather than moving it to a path copied from another version.
An illustrative entry looks like this:
"WorldType": "superflat"This line demonstrates the spelling of the value used by hosting guides; it is not a promise that the line belongs at the top level in your file. Preserve the surrounding braces, commas, and indentation, and do not create duplicate WorldType keys. If your file has no such key, do not guess at a new hierarchy. Check the server version’s configuration template or ask the host which section it generates.
Validate the file before restarting
- Confirm that every opening brace and quotation mark still has a matching closing character.
- Check that the property immediately before the edited line ends with a comma when JSON requires one, and that the final property in an object does not have an extra comma.
- Make sure the value is a string, written as
"superflat", rather than an unquoted word. - Save the file under its original name and in its original directory.
If the server refuses to start after the edit, restore the backup copy first. A startup failure caused by invalid JSON must be corrected before troubleshooting world generation.
Choose a world name and regenerate
Preferred method: create a second world
With the server stopped and the world type set, change the selected world name to a new, unused value. The name can be any value accepted by your panel or server version; the important property is that it has not already been generated. Keep the original save untouched. On the next start, the server sees a new name and applies the creation settings while building that map.
This method is useful when you want to compare the superflat map with the original world or preserve an active community map. It also avoids the common mistake of deleting a directory that belongs to another world.

Replacement method: remove the old save
If you intend to replace the existing world, stop the server, verify your backup, and remove only the save associated with the selected world from data/Saves/. The exact folder naming convention can vary, so identify it from the server’s world list or configuration rather than deleting the entire Saves directory blindly.
Leave the configuration file in place. Removing configuration and save data together makes it harder to determine whether a failure came from malformed JSON, a wrong world name, or a missing world folder. Start with the backed-up save available, then delete only what is necessary to trigger generation.
Restart and verify the result
- Start the server after the new name or save replacement is in place.
- Watch the startup console or panel log until world generation completes and the server reports that it is ready for connections.
- Join with a character and inspect the terrain. A new map should not contain the landmarks and edits from the previous world.
- Check the server’s world list or save directory to confirm that a new save was created under the selected name.
- Only after verification should you remove temporary backups or make further configuration changes.
If the map is not flat, stop before making additional edits. First establish whether you accidentally loaded the old world, whether the new name was actually saved, and whether the server accepted the setting. Repeated restarts without checking the log can create several unwanted worlds and make the original problem harder to isolate.
What to do when the result is unchanged
The old terrain loads
- Confirm that the selected world name is new or that the correct save was removed.
- Reopen the configuration and search for every occurrence of
WorldType; you may have edited a template or an unused file. - Check whether the panel overwrote your manual edit when it started the server. If it did, use the panel’s own world-type control or edit the provider-designated file.
- Review the startup log for the world name that was actually loaded.
The server starts but ignores superflat
The exact value is not confirmed by the official wiki material available for this topic; the value comes from hosting-provider instructions. Server builds can also change key names and nesting. Verify the expected value against the configuration template shipped with your Vintage Story version or the host’s current documentation. Do not substitute a similarly named option from a different game or an older guide.
The server will not start
Restore the untouched configuration backup, then start the server once to confirm that the problem is the edit. If it starts normally, reapply only the world-type change with valid JSON syntax. If it still fails, the issue may be unrelated to superflat generation; use the first error in the startup log rather than later cascade messages.
The new world is created but players cannot find resources
Hosting guidance describes superflat maps as having no natural resources and recommends a creative-building play style for that reason. Decide in advance whether the server is intended for construction, testing, or survival experimentation. Changing play style does not replace the need to generate a new world, and it should not be used as evidence that the world-type setting was accepted.

Vintage Story provides the in-game /worldconfig command for settings that are supported after a world has been created. The official World Configuration guidance uses this route for existing-world changes, while creation-only settings must be supplied before generation. Do not treat /worldconfig as a command that retroactively rebuilds terrain into a superflat map.
Use the command only for options your server version documents as runtime-editable. If your goal is a genuinely new flat map, use the stop, new-name-or-backup, and restart procedure instead. Keep an administrator backup before experimenting with any world command.
Version-safe checklist
- Server process is stopped, not merely idle.
- Current save is copied outside the live server directory.
- Current world name is recorded.
- You identified the configuration file actually used by this installation.
- You searched for
WorldTypeand confirmed its surrounding section instead of assuming a universal path. - The value is entered as
superflatusing the spelling accepted by your panel or server build. - A new world name is selected, or the correct save is backed up and removed.
- JSON syntax is valid and the file remains in its original location.
- Startup logs show the intended world name and successful generation.
- You have joined the server and checked that the map is new before deleting backups.
Configuration details that require extra caution
Older superflat instructions remain in circulation, and several were published long before the current server version. Their filenames and nesting should therefore be treated as examples rather than guarantees. The same caution applies to claims that a particular key is official: the official World Configuration page confirms the broader creation-time rule, but the available material does not establish a single universal superflat key path for every release.
When documentation conflicts, prefer this order of evidence: the controls and configuration template generated by your running server, the current instructions from your hosting provider, and then older community guides. Keep a copy of every file before changing it so that you can return to a known working state.
