Use a different password for every account, make any password you create yourself at least 15 characters long, and turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) wherever it is offered. A password manager can generate and store unique passwords; where a service supports passkeys, those can reduce phishing risk and the need to memorize passwords.
Build a password that is hard to guess
Make it long
If you must create a password yourself, NIST’s consumer guidance recommends at least 15 characters. A long passphrase made from several words can be easier to remember than a shorter string of mixed characters, but avoid familiar quotations or predictable phrases. Length helps, but no password length guarantees safety against every attack.

NIST’s technical standard, SP 800-63B-4, sets requirements for services that verify passwords: a service must require at least 15 characters when a password is the only authentication factor. When a password is used only as part of MFA, the service may set a lower minimum, but not below eight characters. These are requirements for services, not a recommendation to choose a shorter password yourself.
Do not rely on character-mix rules
Rules such as “one uppercase letter, one number, and one symbol” do not make a predictable password reliable. NIST’s standard says services must not require such composition rules. Instead, it calls for checking proposed passwords against blocklists of common, expected, or compromised choices. Choose a long, uncommon password rather than making a familiar one harder to type.

Use a unique password for every account
Never reuse a password across accounts. If one service is breached and its password is exposed, reusing that password can put other accounts at risk. A password manager can generate a distinct, long password for each account and retain it for you, so you do not have to memorize them all.
When choosing a manager, look for the practical safeguards NIST highlights: use a long master passphrase, enable MFA for the manager if it offers it, and understand its account-recovery process. Managers differ in how they store data and handle recovery, so do not assume every product has the same protections. NIST recommends allowing password managers and autofill in the services that accept passwords; its guidance is not an endorsement of any particular vendor.

Add protection beyond the password
Turn on MFA wherever it is available. It asks for another proof of identity in addition to the password, which can help protect an account even if the password is compromised. Options include authenticator apps, push approvals, text codes, and USB security keys. They do not all provide the same level of security, and a method only helps if the account and your devices support it.
Consider a passkey when a service offers one
Passkeys avoid memorizing a separate password and are designed to be difficult to steal through phishing. They are not available on every service, and their use depends on the devices and recovery options available to you. If you can enable a passkey, consider it alongside MFA and keep account recovery information current.

Passwords remain common, so a passkey does not remove the need to protect password-based accounts. NIST’s consumer guidance notes that alternatives are constrained by the technology people have available.
Know when to change a password
Change a password when there is evidence it may have been exposed or compromised—for example, when a service alerts you to a breach or you discover suspicious account activity. NIST SP 800-63B-4 says services should not force users to change passwords on an arbitrary schedule, but should require a change when there is evidence of compromise. A routine calendar change is not a substitute for unique passwords and MFA.

What services should allow
NIST SP 800-63B-4 is a technical standard for services that verify passwords, not a guarantee about every website’s settings. It says services should allow passwords of at least 64 characters, accept spaces and printable ASCII characters, and accept Unicode. It also requires services to allow password managers and autofill, limit failed login attempts, and require a password change when the authenticator is compromised.
