Give your laptop a strong sign-in credential, require authentication after inactivity, and lock it manually whenever you step away. Windows and macOS have built-in settings for all three; the exact controls depend on the operating-system version.
Start with a sign-in method that protects the laptop
Make sure your Windows or Mac user account requires a strong password or another supported sign-in method to unlock the computer. Windows supports a password or Windows Hello, when available. Apple’s device-security guidance likewise recommends requiring a strong password on a Mac. See Microsoft’s device-security guidance.

The practical requirement is that the account has a sign-in credential and that the laptop asks for authentication when you return.

Set Windows to require sign-in after inactivity
Require sign-in when waking from sleep
- Open Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Under Require sign-in, choose the option to require sign-in when Windows wakes from sleep.
- Set an inactivity period in Windows display and sleep settings. Microsoft says 10 or 15 minutes is usually a good interval, while advising users to choose what works for them. The cited guidance does not identify a publication year for this recommendation. Microsoft’s guidance
You can have Windows turn off the display without putting the whole PC to sleep; Microsoft says the display alone can activate the lock. Sleeping the whole PC may also save electricity.

Optionally require sign-in when a screen saver resumes
- Go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen > Screen saver.
- Set the screen-saver Wait time.
- Check On resume, display logon screen, then apply the change.
The Settings presentation may vary between Windows versions. Microsoft’s screen-saver instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Lock Windows immediately before stepping away
Press Windows logo key + L to lock the screen manually. This is useful when you leave before the automatic inactivity timer expires. Microsoft documents the shortcut.

Set automatic locking on a Mac
macOS Ventura 13 or later
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Lock Screen.
- Set when the display turns off for battery use and power-adapter use, as appropriate for how you use the Mac.
- For Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off, choose when the Mac should require a password. A shorter delay asks for authentication sooner; Apple does not prescribe one universal delay.

On older releases, Apple documents the equivalent control under System Preferences > Security & Privacy. Labels and layout vary by release; see Apple’s password-after-wake instructions for the older control.

Choose a timing that fits how you use the laptop
The setting that matters is the time between walking away and the device requiring authentication. On Windows, Microsoft’s 10- or 15-minute suggestion concerns the idle period before sleep; the screen-saver route offers a separate wait time. On Mac, the display-off interval and the password delay are separate controls. Choose a delay short enough for the places you use the laptop, while accounting for how often you pause to read or work without touching it.
If a timing control is unavailable or cannot be changed, an organization may manage it through device policy. Microsoft notes that policy can disable a Windows reauthentication setting in its Windows sign-in options accessibility guidance.

Understand what an automatic lock does—and does not do
Automatic locking reduces the chance that someone can use an unattended laptop without signing in. It is not a complete defense against physical access: Apple specifically cautions that locking a Mac does not prevent someone from turning it off or restarting it.
