Create your overlay in Canva, export a static design as a transparent PNG or an animated design as an MP4, then add the file to a scene in streaming software such as OBS Studio or Streamlabs. Canva recommends a 1920 × 1080 px canvas for Twitch overlays; that is Canva’s recommendation, not a Twitch requirement.
1. Start with a template or blank design
- Open Canva and search for a Twitch overlay, or start with a blank overlay design.
- Choose a style that fits the kind of stream you make. Canva’s template collection includes gameplay, webcam, and intermission designs, and you can adapt a template or build your own.
Canva’s template selection can change over time, so choose based on the options currently available in your account.
2. Plan the layout before adding graphics
Decide what viewers need to see and where it belongs. Possible elements include channel branding, a webcam frame, social handles, a chat window, recent donors, or a subscriber goal. These are optional design elements, not requirements.
- Keep the important gameplay or video area visible.
- Use text and graphics that remain legible at the size viewers will see on screen.
- Match colors and typography to your channel identity.
- Consider whether motion adds useful emphasis or simply distracts from the content.
3. Customize the design
Use Canva’s frames, text, images, icons, shapes, illustrations, and other graphics to build the layout. You can replace template elements, rearrange them, or create the design from scratch. Compare options by stream type, how much screen space they cover, readability, and visual consistency.

4. Choose a canvas size and export format
Canva recommends a 1920 × 1080 px canvas for Twitch overlays. This is a Canva recommendation; it is not presented here as a Twitch platform specification.
- Static overlay: export as a transparent PNG so the scene beneath it remains visible through open areas.
- Animated overlay: export as an MP4. Canva recommends MP4 for animated overlays.

5. Add the overlay to your streaming scene
Canva describes the handoff at a high level: create a scene in broadcasting software, add the overlay image as a source, and arrange it to suit the layout. Canva identifies OBS Studio and Streamlabs as examples of software that can import the exported file.
The exact menus and source settings can vary by software version, so use the current instructions for your chosen streaming application if you need version-specific steps. Preview the scene before going live to check alignment, legibility, and whether the overlay covers anything important.
