To create a Steam Game Server Login Token (GSLT), sign in to Steam, open the official Steam Game Server Account Management page, enter the target game’s App ID and a descriptive memo, then create the account and copy the token. Start the dedicated server with +sv_setsteamaccount YOUR_TOKEN (using the exact startup syntax required by that game). A GSLT is a persistent credential for a dedicated game server, not your normal Steam password.
The token is free, but it is sensitive: Steam makes the account owner responsible for it and says not to distribute it to third parties. Use a separate token for each server, keep it out of public configuration and logs, and regenerate or delete it if it is exposed.

What a GSLT is and why a server needs one
A Steam Game Server Login Token is a persistent game-server account credential linked to a Steam account and created for one game App ID. Steam’s management page describes these as accounts for dedicated game servers. In Steamworks terminology, the account has a persistent identity and a login token that the server presents when it connects to Steam services.
That makes a GSLT different from a player login. Players authenticate with their own Steam accounts; a dedicated server uses the GSLT assigned to its server account. The token identifies the server account and lets the game’s Steam integration associate the running server with the correct title.

Steam does not use one universal token for every game. Each token is created with an App ID, and the App ID must match the game or dedicated-server product that is actually running. App IDs can differ between a base game, a dedicated-server package, and separate branches, so verify the value in the target game’s current official dedicated-server documentation before creating an account.
The token itself has no purchase price. You do not need a Steam gift card, printed manual, special router, or server chassis to create one. You do need an eligible Steam account, ownership of the relevant game, and a server installation that supports GSLT authentication.

Check these requirements first
Steam lists account requirements on its management page. Confirm all of the following before attempting to create an account:
- Your Steam account is not community banned or locked.
- Your account is not limited.
- A qualifying phone number is registered to the account.
- You own the game for which you are creating the server account.
- You know the correct App ID for the server software you will run.
Steam states that one Steam account can create up to 1,000 game-server accounts. That is an account-level ceiling, not a statement that one token can be used by 1,000 servers. Each server should have its own account and token.
Create a GSLT through Steam’s web page
- Sign in to Steam. Use the Steam account that meets the eligibility requirements and owns the target game.
- Open the management page. Go to https://steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameservers. This is Steam’s official Game Server Account Management page.
- Find “Create a new game server account.” The form asks for an App ID and a memo.
- Enter the target App ID. Copy the numeric App ID from the game’s official documentation or server package information. Do not substitute your Steam user ID, a workshop ID, a depot ID, or an App ID for a different edition or branch.
- Enter a useful memo. Use a label such as
EU survival server 01orstaging instance - March 2026. Steamworks calls this fieldmemo. It is a reminder for you and does not change the account’s permissions or behavior. - Create the account. Submit the form and wait for Steam to display the generated login token.
- Copy the token immediately. Store it in a password manager or another access-controlled secret store. Do not put it in a public issue, chat message, screenshot, tutorial, or source repository. Never publish a real token in a configuration example.
The token is the value you pass to the dedicated server. The memo is not a replacement for documentation: keep a separate inventory recording which server uses the token, while limiting access to the token itself.
Use the correct App ID
An incorrect App ID is one of the most common setup mistakes because the management form accepts a number but cannot know which server binary you intend to run. Check the target game’s current server instructions and confirm whether they refer to the retail game App ID, a dedicated-server App ID, or a branch-specific product.
What to verify
- Read the game developer’s dedicated-server documentation, not only a community launch guide.
- Check whether the instructions distinguish a client App ID from a dedicated-server App ID.
- Confirm that the server branch you installed is the same branch described by the documentation.
- When in doubt, create no token until the App ID is confirmed; deleting and recreating accounts creates avoidable credential work.
App IDs are game-specific and can change by product or branch. An example that is correct for one title is not automatically correct for another, so this article intentionally does not provide a universal numeric App ID.

Pass the token to the dedicated server
Creating the account does not configure the server by itself. The token must be supplied when the dedicated server starts, using the game’s documented command-line option or configuration mechanism.
For Garry’s Mod, Valve’s instructions use this exact startup form:
+sv_setsteamaccount YOUR_TOKENReplace YOUR_TOKEN with the generated value and place the option in the server’s startup command. Valve’s instruction specifically says the setting must be supplied on server startup. Other Steam games may use a different flag or configuration field; do not assume that sv_setsteamaccount works outside the game that documents it.

A safe startup procedure
- Stop the server before changing its launch configuration.
- Back up the existing startup command so you can restore it if another option is accidentally removed.
- Add the game’s documented GSLT option and the token as a protected secret.
- Start the server and inspect the normal startup output for a successful Steam login or server-account connection.
- Check that the token itself is not echoed into a shared log, control-panel history, crash report, or process listing visible to untrusted users.
- If authentication fails, stop the server before repeatedly retrying; work through the diagnostic checks below.
Control panels, container definitions, service managers, and shell scripts all handle secrets differently. Follow the hosting platform’s secret-storage guidance, but preserve the game’s exact option name and startup requirement.
One token per server
Valve’s Garry’s Mod announcement states that two servers cannot share the same GSLT and that owners running multiple servers need a token for each one. Treat that as an explicit Garry’s Mod requirement. Other Steam titles may document equivalent rules, so check the target game’s own server instructions rather than assuming that a token can be reused.
For multiple instances, create a separate game-server account for each instance and use a memo that identifies the environment and location. A practical inventory might distinguish production, staging, test, and temporary event servers. The inventory should record the account identifier or memo and the server assignment without exposing the full token to everyone who can read the inventory.
Keep the token secure and understand its lifecycle
Steam states that you are solely responsible for game-server login tokens and instructs owners not to distribute them to third parties. Handle a GSLT like any other service credential:

- Limit access to the administrators who operate the server.
- Keep it out of public repositories, documentation screenshots, support tickets, and copy-and-paste chat transcripts.
- Prefer an access-controlled secret store over a plain-text file that is included in backups or shared with unrelated services.
- Review launch scripts and logs for accidental token exposure before granting other users access.
- Use a different token for every server so one disclosure does not authenticate multiple instances.
If the token was exposed
Steam’s instruction is to delete a token that was distributed. Remove the affected game-server account from the management page, create a replacement account for the same App ID, and update the server’s startup configuration. Do not continue using a token that appeared in a public or broadly shared location.
If you reset the Steam password
Resetting a Steam password through Steam Help or Steam Support regenerates all GSLTs on the account. Every server using one of those tokens must be updated with its newly generated value. This can affect many servers at once, so maintain an inventory of token-to-server assignments and plan a controlled restart after a password reset.
If a token has been unused for a long time
Steam says a token can expire when it remains unused for a long period because the server never logs in. In that case, regenerate the token and make sure the server actually starts and authenticates. A token that was never used is not evidence that the App ID is wrong; first check whether the account simply aged without a successful login.
Diagnose an invalid or expired GSLT
When a server reports an invalid, rejected, or expired login token, check the causes in this order. The exact error wording varies by game, so use the target game’s server log as the starting point.
1. Confirm the value was copied correctly
Copy the current token from Steam again and compare it with the value supplied at startup. Check for truncated text, added spaces, quotation marks that the game does not expect, or a shell variable that was never expanded. If the token has been displayed in a log or shared channel, treat it as compromised and replace it rather than merely copying it again.
2. Check whether the account was deleted or reset
A deleted game-server account no longer provides a usable persistent credential. A Steam password reset regenerates all GSLTs on the account, so an older value will fail even if the server configuration has not changed. Generate or retrieve the current value and update every affected server.
3. Verify the App ID
The token is created for a specific App ID. Compare the management-page entry with the App ID required by the exact server binary and branch. A token created for another game, edition, or dedicated-server product is not interchangeable.

4. Make sure the startup option is actually being used
The server may be launching from a different script, container revision, service definition, or control-panel profile than the one you edited. Confirm the active startup configuration contains the game’s documented GSLT option and restart the intended instance.
5. Check account eligibility
Review the Steam account’s status, phone registration, limited-account state, and game ownership. A change in eligibility can prevent a new account from being created or stop a newly configured server from authenticating as expected.
6. Consider inactivity expiration
If the server never logged in for a long period, regenerate the token and perform a real startup test. Keep the server online long enough to verify a successful connection rather than creating credentials and leaving them unused.
7. Check for token reuse
If two instances are configured with the same GSLT, separate them and assign one token to each. Garry’s Mod explicitly requires this separation, and other games may enforce a similar policy.

Steamworks’ IGameServersService exposes account-management operations for teams that need more than occasional manual setup. The right approach depends on the number of servers and how much lifecycle automation you need.

Manual creation is normally the least complicated choice for a single server. API automation becomes useful when you operate many instances, need repeatable provisioning, or require an audit trail. Do not place a Web API key in a public server launch command; it is a separate credential with its own security requirements.
What the Steamworks API can manage
The IGameServersService reference lists these account operations:

These methods do not eliminate the need to configure and start the dedicated server. They manage the Steam-side account and credential; the game-specific server still needs the correct startup option and App ID.

Garry’s Mod provides the clearest documented example of why a GSLT matters operationally. Valve’s May 4, 2020 announcement tells server owners to use a token and shows the +sv_setsteamaccount startup command. A May 8, 2020 patch says that Garry’s Mod servers without a GSLT receive a ranking penalty and do not count toward gamemode player counts.
Those ranking and player-count effects are Garry’s Mod evidence, not a universal promise about every Steam game. For another title, read its current dedicated-server documentation to learn whether a missing token prevents login, reduces visibility, affects ranking, or has no documented gameplay consequence.
Recommended operating checklist
- Identify the exact game, server branch, and official App ID.
- Confirm the Steam account is not limited, locked, or community banned; verify qualifying phone registration and game ownership.
- Create one game-server account per server through the official management page.
- Use a memo that identifies the server without putting the token in the label.
- Copy the generated token once and store it in an access-controlled secret location.
- Add the game’s exact startup option; for Garry’s Mod, use
+sv_setsteamaccount YOUR_TOKEN. - Start the server and verify a successful Steam authentication in its normal logs.
- Check that logs, dashboards, backups, and support exports do not reveal the token.
- Record which server uses which account so password resets and rotations can be completed systematically.
- Delete and replace any token that was shared, exposed, or suspected of being copied.
- When running multiple instances, never reuse a token where the game’s documentation requires one per server.
Common misconceptions
A GSLT is not a paid product
Steam provides the game-server account and token through its management page without a token fee. Hosting, bandwidth, and server hardware are separate infrastructure decisions; none is required merely to generate the credential.
A GSLT is not your Steam password
The token authenticates a dedicated game-server account. Do not paste your Steam password into a server launch command, and do not treat a GSLT as a general Steam login.
The memo does not grant permissions
The memo exists to help you recognize the account. Changing it does not change the App ID, rotate the token, or authorize a different server.
Creating a token does not make an unsupported game support GSLT
The game’s dedicated-server software must implement the Steam server-account login flow and document how to pass the credential. If its instructions specify another authentication method, follow those instructions instead of forcing the Garry’s Mod flag.
