Open the post link in the X app or a browser, then use your phone or computer’s built-in screenshot shortcut. The link gets you to the post; your device captures what is visible on screen. If you need to revisit or verify the source later, save the post URL separately—the image is not a live link and does not capture content that is off screen.
Before you capture: open and frame the post
If you already have the post URL, open it in the X app or a browser where you are signed in as needed. If you need to copy the URL first, open the post’s share or menu control and choose Copy link to Post. X’s instructions cover the app and web versions: how to link to a post by URL.
- Open the link and wait until the post’s text, author name and any media you want are visible.
- Adjust the page so the useful context fits in the frame. On a phone, you may need to scroll slightly; on a computer, resizing the browser window or zooming out can help.
- Capture using the device instructions below. Review the image, then crop or annotate a copy if that makes it easier to read.
- Keep the post URL with the image if the source matters. X says a post’s permanent link can show its posting date and time, likes and reposts when viewed.
Capture only content you can actually view. A screenshot does not reveal hidden replies or anything below the captured area, and it is not proof by itself that a post is authentic or unchanged. Do not try to bypass visibility restrictions. X notes that protected posts cannot be shared through Direct Message; access to a protected post may also limit what you can open and capture. Take the screenshot on your device
iPhone
On an iPhone with Face ID, press and quickly release the side button and volume-up button together. On an iPhone with a Home button, press and quickly release Home and the side button together. Tap the screenshot preview to crop, mark up or share the image. Apple’s guide describes these button combinations and the preview tools: Take a screenshot on iPhone.

Apple also documents a Full Page option for content that extends beyond the display, with a Safari webpage as its example. Availability depends on the app and content: do not assume an X post will produce a full-page capture. For a post, the standard screen capture is usually the more predictable option.
Mac
- Press Shift-Command-3 to capture the entire screen.
- Press Shift-Command-4, then drag over the post to capture a selected area.
- For a window capture, press Shift-Command-4, then press Space and select the window.
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot app and see capture options.
For a post image with little surrounding interface, the selected-area method is generally the most direct. Keep enough of the page in view to show the author and the post text if that context matters. Apple documents the shortcuts and options in Take a screenshot on Mac.
Windows 10 or Windows 11
Press Windows-Shift-S to open the Snipping Tool capture overlay, then select the area containing the post. The tool offers rectangular, window, full-screen and freeform captures. Open the resulting snip in Snipping Tool if you need to edit it, then save the image from the app. Microsoft’s instructions are at Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots.

Choose how much of the page to include

A crop can make a post easier to read, but if faithful context matters, retain an unaltered original as well. A conventional screenshot records only the displayed pixels: it does not preserve a working post link, certify the account or post, or include replies and page content outside the capture. Keep the URL separately for those source details.

The post link will not open
Check that the copied address is a post URL, not a link to a profile or a shortened external link inside the post. Try opening the address in the X app or browser you normally use. If the post is protected or otherwise unavailable to your account, a screenshot shortcut cannot make it visible; ask for legitimate access rather than trying to work around the restriction.
The capture is blank or the post is still loading
Wait for the post text and any media you need to appear before taking the screenshot. If the page is still blank, reload it or open the link in the other supported route (app versus browser) and check that the post itself can be viewed. For automated capture, dynamic pages may need an appropriate wait condition; ScreenshotNeo supports waiting for a selector, a delay or network idle, but a wait cannot make inaccessible content available.

The post is cut off or too small to read
Reposition the page so the author and relevant text fit before capturing. On a computer, use a selected-area capture and adjust the browser window or zoom; on a phone, capture the visible post and use the preview’s crop tool. If the content continues below the screen, a full-page option may help only where the device and app support it. Avoid shrinking the page so far that the text becomes unreadable.
The image has too much interface around it
Use a selected region on Mac or Windows, or crop a copy in the phone’s screenshot preview. Keep an original if the surrounding page context could matter. For automated web captures, a selector capture or hiding interface elements may reduce clutter, subject to the page being accessible and correctly rendered.

The screenshot looks different from the post you expected
Verify the address bar or post URL before capture, then compare the author and visible text with the intended post. X also uses t.co to shorten links posted on its service; that external destination is distinct from the post URL. X advises checking a link’s destination before entering a password or downloading software. See How to post links in a Post.

Keep the image and its source together
For a quick record, save the screenshot and the post URL in the same note, folder or document. Use an unedited original where context matters, and label any cropped or annotated copy so it is not mistaken for the full screen. A screenshot is useful for viewing and sharing what appeared on screen at capture time; the post URL remains the route back to the live source, where X may display its date, time, likes and reposts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a screenshot from a Twitter post link without opening the post?
A post URL is an address to open, not an image file. A screenshot needs the post page to render somewhere you can access it, either on a device or through an authorized capture workflow.
Does a screenshot preserve the post if it is later deleted?
It preserves the captured pixels, not the live post or a verifiable archive. Retain the URL and capture date alongside the file if that context matters.
Can I capture someone else’s protected post?
Only if you are legitimately able to view it. A screenshot is not a method for bypassing X’s visibility controls.
