You can create a conversational AI modeled on your digital traces for family members to interact with after your death. It can generate plausible new replies, but it cannot preserve your consciousness, reliably reproduce your beliefs, or make you continue to exist. The responsible approach is to plan consent, data access, disclosure, and an eventual way to retire the system—not just to collect messages and train a model.
What does it mean to make an AI agent that continues as you?
In this context, a posthumous AI agent is a generated representation of someone, built from material such as messages, emails, recordings, photographs, or other digital traces. It uses a model to produce new responses after that person has died.

Meredith Ringel Morris and Jed R. Brubaker call agents that generate new material “generative ghosts,” distinguishing them from systems that simply replay what someone said while alive. The literature also uses terms such as deadbot, griefbot, postmortem avatar, and AI afterlife, without one universally consistent distinction. Aarhus University’s project describes a griefbot as “an AI-powered chatbot designed to mimic a deceased person’s way of communicating.”

What to plan before creating one
There is no established universal standard for building or operating these systems. A 2024 scholarly article recommends meaningful consent, transparent disclosure, limits on access, and sensitive retirement procedures; these are recommendations, not settled law everywhere. A responsible plan should address the people whose data and lives are implicated.
Get the represented person’s consent
If you are planning your own agent, make your wishes explicit while you can: whether you want one made, what data may be used, who may create it, and who may interact with it. A relative’s possession of your old messages does not itself establish your permission to use them to create a simulation.

Consider other people in the data
Messages and emails involve correspondents as well as the person represented. A family member who can access an archive is a data recipient, but that access does not automatically mean every person in the archive agreed to have their words included in a posthumous agent. Decide how to exclude or protect other people’s material.
Ask whether future users want to interact
Consent also matters for the people who will use the system. Do not assume that every relative or friend wants an AI conversation as part of grieving. The research recommendations include limiting access to adults; they do not establish a global legal rule or technical standard.

Set limits and an end point
Decide who can access the agent, what it should disclose about being simulated, and how someone can report an upsetting or misleading response. Establish who can pause or retire it, and what happens to its underlying data when it ends. The scholarship stresses sensitive procedures for ending a deadbot rather than treating it as an indefinitely available service.
What risks and benefits should families weigh?
A simulated conversation may offer comfort or a perceived sense of presence for some bereaved people. It may also affect acceptance of the death or adjustment to life without the deceased. Aarhus University’s Conversations with the Dead project says empirical knowledge about these effects remains limited; its work investigates bereaved people’s experiences through interviews, ethnographic methods, and quantitative research.

That uncertainty cuts both ways: a griefbot is not a validated treatment, and the available evidence does not establish that it inevitably harms every user. It should not be treated as a replacement for human relationships or bereavement support. The project also highlights questions about the deceased person’s privacy and digital legacy, and the possibility of influencing people in vulnerable situations. How to evaluate a service or proposal
Named services are examples of the category, not endorsements. A 2024 article discusses Project December, which offered simulated text conversations, including conversations with someone deceased; a 2026 review search result names Seance AI and HereAfter AI. Those references do not establish any service’s current availability, price, features, privacy practices, or geographic access. Verify those details directly before sharing data or paying.

- Consent: Can the represented person authorize the agent in advance, and can their wishes be respected?
- Data: What material is collected, who controls it, and how can it be deleted? Consider correspondents’ privacy as well as the represented person’s.
- Disclosure: Does the service clearly identify generated replies as simulation and explain that they can be inaccurate?
- Access: Who can interact with the agent? Are safeguards in place for people who may be especially vulnerable?
- Safety and control: How can users flag harmful or misleading output, pause access, or retire the agent? What happens to stored data afterward?
- Practical terms: Confirm current availability, cost, and geographic coverage from the service itself.
The 2026 review of deadbot ethics is indexed by ScienceDirect; its mention of a service should not be mistaken for verification of that service’s current terms.
Is making an agent a good digital-legacy choice?
It can be one part of a digital legacy, but it is not a reliable record of what you believed or would advise. If your goal is to leave guidance, stories, or messages for family, consider recording those directly and labeling them as your own words. An AI agent can generate beyond that record; a direct recording or letter cannot be confused with a newly generated reply in the same way.
If you still want a conversational simulation, document consent and boundaries, choose only data you have the right to use, and give future users a clear explanation of what the system can and cannot represent. The essential decision is not simply whether an agent can be made, but whether everyone affected has a meaningful choice about its creation, use, and end.
