Start with a focused home page, a small set of coherent galleries, an About page and a contact or inquiry path. Then test image speed, accessibility and forms before publishing.
1. Decide what the portfolio must achieve
A portfolio for wedding bookings should not be organized like one for editorial commissions or gallery submissions. Write one sentence describing the primary visitor and action you want:
- Client inquiries: show relevant assignments, your process, service area and an inquiry form.
- Editorial or gallery submissions: emphasize a tightly edited series, captions, credits, project statement and CV.
- Employment: foreground work matching the role, measurable responsibilities, collaborators and contact details.
- Prints or services: add product, pricing, booking or commerce features only if they support the business.
- Personal publishing: prioritize essays, projects, captions and an archive structure over sales tools.
Choose one primary call to action (for example, “Request a quote” or “View the series”). Secondary links can lead to social profiles, a newsletter or a shop, but they should not compete with the main action.
2. Choose a platform and domain
Use a hosted builder when you want managed templates, hosting, SSL and editing without maintaining a server. A custom domain such as yourname.com is easier to remember and presents a consistent identity; connect it through the platform’s domain settings and confirm that HTTPS is active.

Features, plan limits and pricing change, so verify the current plan details on the provider’s site before purchasing. Pick the editor you will actually maintain; a theoretically powerful platform is not useful if updating a project is cumbersome.
3. Curate and prepare the photographs
Build a deliberate edit
Begin with your strongest and most relevant images, not a complete archive. Remove near-duplicates, technically weak frames and work that attracts the wrong type of inquiry. Group photographs by genre, client type, location or series only when the grouping helps a visitor decide whether to contact you.
Create a private draft and ask two or three peers, mentors or past clients to answer: What kind of photographer does this site describe? Which image do you remember? What would you click next? Revise based on patterns in their answers.
Export for the web
- Keep an original, high-resolution master offline and export separate web copies.
- Resize images to the largest display width your template needs; oversized originals slow downloads.
- Use modern JPEG or WebP where your platform supports it, and compress until detail and texture remain convincing.
- Use responsive image settings so phones do not download desktop-sized files.
- Give every meaningful image descriptive alt text. Describe the subject and context rather than repeating a file name; decorative images can use empty alt text.
- Add captions, dates, location or project statements when context improves the story or establishes credits.
There is no universal ideal number of portfolio images. A short, coherent edit is usually easier to evaluate than an undifferentiated archive. Use your own analytics and inquiry quality to decide whether a gallery needs more depth.

Home or landing page
Lead with one strong image or concise visual sequence, a plain-language description of your specialty and your primary call to action. State your location or service area when it affects hiring. Keep navigation visible and limit competing buttons.

Portfolio or gallery pages
Make each gallery a project with a clear title and, where useful, a one-sentence introduction. Put the most representative image first. Provide captions or credits for commissioned, collaborative or published work. Avoid forcing visitors through a slideshow with no way to scan or return.
About page
Explain what you photograph, where you work and the perspective or process that matters to clients. Add a concise biography, selected clients or publications only when accurate, and a professional portrait if it helps establish trust.
Contact or inquiry page
Show an email address and a short form. Ask only for information needed to respond, such as name, email, project type, date, location and budget range. Include expected response timing if you can maintain it. Test confirmation messages and spam protection before launch.
Useful optional pages
Add services, testimonials, a CV, credits, a blog, behind-the-scenes notes or a shop when each supports the site’s goal. An archive that is never updated is less useful than a smaller selection you maintain.
5. Design the visitor path
- From the home page, a visitor should understand your specialty and see a route to relevant work.
- From a gallery, they should be able to move to another project or contact you without returning to the browser controls.
- From the About page, they should find evidence that you are available and appropriate for the assignment.
- From every major page, keep the primary inquiry, booking or purchase action visible.
Use consistent typography, logo treatment, image spacing and color. Let photographs carry visual weight; avoid animated effects that distract from them. Check touch targets, menu behavior and image zoom on a phone before publishing.

6. Make the site fast and accessible
Preview pages on a normal mobile connection, not only on your desktop Wi-Fi. Look for layout shifts while images load, galleries that trap the back button, horizontal scrolling and forms that are difficult to complete with a thumb. Compress hero images especially carefully because they determine the first impression.
Use meaningful headings, sufficient color contrast, keyboard-accessible controls and descriptive link text. Add alt text to informative images; Squarespace’s help guidance notes that alt text can help images appear in search results and makes a site more accessible to potential clients. Captions and project descriptions also help visitors understand work when an image alone is ambiguous.

7. Configure trust, discovery and measurement
- Connect the custom domain and verify HTTPS, canonical domain and contact email.
- Write a distinct page title and description for each important project instead of repeating a generic “photography portfolio.”
- Link social profiles that you actively maintain; remove abandoned accounts.
- Add analytics or platform reporting so you can see which galleries receive attention and which pages lead to inquiries.
- Keep consent, privacy and contact-form notices appropriate to your visitors and jurisdiction.
Do not promise yourself a search ranking or a fixed conversion rate from a particular builder. Treat discovery and inquiries as outcomes to measure and improve.
8. Launch checklist and maintenance
- Review every gallery on current desktop and mobile browsers.
- Submit a real test inquiry and confirm delivery, reply address and confirmation text.
- Check every navigation, social and email link.
- Proofread names, credits, locations, dates and project descriptions.
- Ask a fresh reviewer to complete a task such as “find your portrait work and contact you.”
- Publish, then monitor broken links, image loading and inquiry quality.
Schedule a quarterly edit. Remove stale or weak work, add finished projects and update availability, services and contact details. Promote substantial updates through social channels, email or a blog rather than posting every minor change.

Troubleshooting common problems
Images look soft or crop badly
Check the source export dimensions, the template’s focal-point setting and the responsive crop. Re-export at the required display width and test portrait and landscape images separately.
The page feels slow
Reduce hero-file dimensions and compression quality, remove duplicate images, enable the builder’s responsive image delivery and test again on mobile. A video background or very large slideshow may be the main cause.

Send a test from a second address, inspect spam folders and verify the form’s notification recipient and domain email settings. If delivery remains unreliable, publish a visible email link as a fallback.

Visitors cannot understand the work
Shorten galleries, add project titles and captions, and move the most relevant series to the front. Ask someone unfamiliar with the project what they think you do after ten seconds on the home page.
