For a batch of photos, PowerPoint’s Photo Album feature creates an editable slide for each image; for custom layouts, insert photos onto slides individually. Add captions and transitions, then set slide timings if the presentation needs to play unattended. You can share the editable presentation or export a video for viewers who should not need to edit it.
Choose a workflow for your photos
Use Photo Album when you want PowerPoint to build a sequence of slides from existing image files. Use individual picture insertion when you want to design each slide more freely. Microsoft lists Photo Album for PowerPoint for Microsoft 365, PowerPoint 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016; this is a desktop feature, and ribbon labels or availability can vary by edition. Microsoft’s Photo Album instructions describe the documented desktop workflow.

Create a slideshow with Photo Album
- In PowerPoint, select Insert > Photo Album > New Photo Album.
- Under Insert picture from, choose File/Disk, browse to your photos, and select the images to include.
- Use the up and down controls to put the photos in the order you want. Check the sequence before creating the album.
- Select Create. PowerPoint generates slides that you can continue editing like other presentation slides.
Adjust the layout and captions
To revise the album, choose Insert > Photo Album > Edit Photo Album. The desktop options include picture layout, frame shape, theme, and captions below all pictures. The filename is used as an initial caption placeholder; replace it in Normal view with a clear description of the image. You can also reorder individual pictures and make basic rotation, brightness, and contrast adjustments.
Build the slideshow one slide at a time
For a more individually composed presentation, create a slide for each photo and insert the image directly. Choose Insert > Pictures, select an available source, and browse to the image. Reposition it or drag a corner handle to resize it. In PowerPoint for the web, Microsoft lists sources including This Device, Stock Images, Search on Web, Mobile Device, and OneDrive; the choices depend on your version and account. See Microsoft’s presentation creation instructions.

Add transitions and set automatic playback
Choose a transition
Select a slide, open the Transitions tab, and choose an effect. Use Apply To All to use it throughout the presentation when that suits your design. Microsoft’s web instructions cover selecting transitions, while its desktop guidance includes choosing an effect and adjusting Effect Options. For a photo sequence, restrained, consistent transitions help keep attention on the images. Microsoft’s PowerPoint for the web guidance describes the web workflow.
Make slides advance on a timer
For an unattended display, use the Transitions tab to set After to the interval each slide should remain on screen, set Duration for the transition itself, then select Apply To All if the same timing should apply throughout. These controls determine different things: After sets the wait before advancing, while Duration sets how long the transition takes. Preview the full presentation and confirm that viewers have enough time to read each caption. Microsoft’s instructions are for its self-running presentation workflow; exact controls can vary by version. See Microsoft’s self-running presentation instructions.

Share an editable presentation or export a video
Share the PowerPoint file when recipients may need to edit it. If they should simply watch the slideshow, Microsoft documents a video export through File > Export > Create a Video. Choose a quality setting and whether to include recorded narration and timings.
| Microsoft video export setting | Output resolution |
|---|---|
| Ultra HD (4K) | 3840 × 2160; Microsoft identifies this option as available with Windows 10 or later |
| Full HD (1080p) | 1920 × 1080 |
| HD (720p) | 1280 × 720 |
| Standard (480p) | 852 × 480 |
These are Microsoft’s listed export-setting resolutions, not a guarantee that every version or device offers the same choices. Higher quality creates a larger file, so select a setting that fits the playback display and delivery method. Before distributing the video, play it through and check for missing content. Microsoft notes that some items may not be included, including legacy media inserted in older PowerPoint versions, QuickTime media under specified conditions, macros, and OLE/ActiveX controls. Microsoft’s video export instructions detail the export options and compatibility caveats.
