Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Create a payment QR code through your payment provider or payment-link service, not with a generic QR generator alone. The provider connects the scan to a supported checkout and records the transaction. First decide whether customers should enter the amount or scan to pay for a specific product, service, or event.
Choose the payment flow before you make the code
The right code depends on what the customer should see after scanning. A reusable merchant code can send customers to a checkout where they enter the amount. A payment link can instead open checkout configured for a particular item, service, deposit, class, or event. A QR image by itself does not create a payment account, checkout, or way to reconcile sales.

- Use an amount-entry code for flexible transactions such as market stalls or appointments where totals vary. PayPal’s business QR instructions describe customers scanning the code, entering the amount, and paying: PayPal business QR codes.
- Use a payment link and its QR code when you want checkout to identify a product, service, event, or set price. PayPal Payment Links support product details, images, pricing, and customer notes; Square offers link types for collecting a payment, selling an item, an event or class, and a donation: PayPal Payment Links and Square payment links.
Create the QR code with your payment provider
Use the provider where you already receive and track payments if it supports merchant-presented QR checkout. Account eligibility, accepted payment methods, feature availability, and menu labels can vary by country, account, and app version. If you use another processor, ask your acquirer or service provider what it supports; the U.S. Payments Forum advises merchants to contact their provider for implementation specifics: U.S. Payments Forum QR code FAQ.
PayPal: business QR code
- Sign in to your PayPal Business account and create its unique QR code using PayPal’s business QR flow.
- Display or share that code. Customers scan it, enter the amount, and pay through PayPal’s payment flow.
- Check the transaction in your PayPal account after payment. The documented US QR page says code creation has no setup fee or monthly cost; it currently lists a transaction fee of 2.29% plus $0.09 per completed QR transaction. This is a US-specific figure, not a worldwide price, and PayPal says fees may change. See the current PayPal US QR page.
PayPal: payment link with a QR code
- In your PayPal Business account, open the Payment Links creation flow.
- Enter the product or service information and configure relevant options such as price, shipping, tax, or customer notes where available.
- Use the build/share flow to generate the payment link and its QR code, then share or display it.
- Review the live checkout and confirm completed payments in your PayPal account.
PayPal describes Payment Links as opening PayPal-hosted checkout. Its US page lists different rates by payment method: 3.49% plus $0.10 for PayPal or Venmo payments, 4.99% plus $0.10 for Pay Later, and 2.99% plus $0.10 for debit cards, credit cards, and Apple Pay. These Payment Link rates are not interchangeable with the QR transaction rate above; eligibility and availability vary. Check PayPal’s current US Payment Links page before publishing prices or setting your checkout policy.

- Enter a customer-facing title, amount, and relevant details, then save the link.

- Review sales and manage the link in Square’s link controls and reporting.
Square also supports creating some link types in its POS app. Some settings are Dashboard-only, and Square says international links do not support tax and shipping fee settings. Its processing fees vary by plan, so check the current terms for your account: Square’s payment link instructions and Square payments.
Compare providers on the details that affect checkout
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Region and eligibility | Features, payment methods, and account requirements depend on location and account. Confirm what is available to your business before printing codes. PayPal describes broad availability but links to regional information: PayPal QR code developer documentation. |
| Checkout behavior | Decide between customer-entered amounts and checkout configured for a specific item, service, or event. Confirm the customer sees the intended amount and description. |
| Accepted payment methods | PayPal’s Payment Links documentation lists PayPal, Pay Later, Venmo, Apple Pay, and major cards, while warning that availability varies. Check which options are enabled for your region and account: PayPal QR and checkout documentation. |
| Fees | Compare the fee for the exact transaction type and payment method, not just a provider’s headline rate. PayPal’s US QR and Payment Link pages list different rates; Square says rates vary by plan. |
| POS fit and operations | Consider staff training, reporting, link controls, integration with your existing POS, and internet connectivity. Square documents link-level reporting and controls; Deloitte identifies POS integration, customer journey, and connectivity as implementation considerations: Deloitte on QR code payments. |
Test the code and make payment verification part of the routine
- Scan the provider-generated code with a suitable customer device before using it. Check that the destination and business identity are correct.
- Inspect the checkout: confirm whether the customer enters an amount or sees the expected item, price, and other details.
- Train staff to look for a completed transaction in the provider account or POS records. A screenshot or customer claim alone is not proof that the payment settled.
- Display the code where customers can identify it as the business’s payment option. PayPal recommends scanning the displayed code directly rather than relying on a screenshot; the U.S. Payments Forum flags screenshots of already-used codes as a potential concern and recommends customer and employee awareness.
A countertop holder or printed sign is only a way to display the code; it is not a required payment product. Keep the payment destination clear and explain the process to employees and customers.

Check local fees, records, and obligations
The documented instructions and fee examples above are primarily from US provider pages. Before accepting payments, check your country’s provider terms, supported payment methods, account eligibility, and applicable tax and reporting obligations. Provider fees and features can change, and the stated rates do not establish that every merchant will qualify.
