Select your motif, choose Object > Pattern > Make, refine the repeating tile in Pattern Editing mode, then choose Done. Illustrator saves the result as a swatch that you can apply to another object’s fill or stroke.
Create a pattern from your artwork

Create or select the vector artwork you want to repeat. You can also start the pattern workflow before adding artwork.

With the motif selected, choose Object > Pattern > Make. Illustrator opens Pattern Options and previews repeated copies in Pattern Editing mode.

Set a name and choose a tile layout. Adjust the tile dimensions, spacing, and overlap as needed; use the live preview to check how the motif repeats.

Choose Done to save the pattern. Illustrator adds a new pattern to the Swatches panel. Adobe’s pattern creation guide documents this workflow.
Choose a repeat layout and adjust the tile
The tile is the unit Illustrator repeats. Its boundary, dimensions, and spacing determine where each motif sits in relation to its neighbors.

To inspect the repeat, use preview controls such as Show Tile Edge, Show Swatch Bounds, Copies, and Dim Copies to. Adobe explains these controls and tile settings in its pattern editing guide.

Select the object you want to decorate.

Open its fill or stroke swatches and choose the pattern swatch you created.

If the result needs adjustment, double-click the pattern swatch to reopen Pattern Editing mode, make changes, and choose Done.

Save changes or cancel pattern editing
Choose Done to save the pattern. When you edit an existing pattern swatch, saving updates its definition. Save a Copy, when available, keeps a separate copy; Cancel leaves the editing operation without saving it.

Unexpected gaps or collisions: Show the tile edge and adjust its width, height, or horizontal and vertical spacing. The tile boundary determines the repeat unit, so inspect the preview rather than assuming the artwork will tile seamlessly.

Tile Type or Brick Offset cannot be changed: The controls may be unavailable for a generated pattern. Adobe notes that generated patterns do not allow changes to Tile Type or Brick Offset.
Optional starting points
Illustrator includes pattern libraries you can use as a starting point. Adobe also documents Text to Pattern, an optional generative feature that creates pattern swatches; it is not required for the manual workflow above. See Adobe’s guide to generating patterns for that feature.
Adobe’s creation instructions were last updated August 31, 2026, and its editing instructions February 11, 2026. Interface labels or control availability may differ in other Illustrator versions.
