A self-managed server uses the -WorldSaveName=<name> launch parameter; deleting a save folder is a last resort because it permanently removes that world’s progress.
What changes when you create a new world?
Abiotic Factor stores progression, map state and sandbox settings inside each world save. Starting the server with a different save name makes the server generate a separate world while leaving the previous save available under its original name. This is the safest way to start over, test a different difficulty, or run separate groups without overwriting an established facility.

The exact control depends on how you run the server:

Do not delete the old save merely to make room for a new one. A new name gives you a clean world and an immediate way back.

Before you change anything
Stop the server completely
Use the panel’s Stop control or stop the dedicated-server process before editing a name, launch argument or save folder. Editing while the process is writing can leave an incomplete save or cause the server to continue using the old configuration.
Make a recoverable copy
Download or copy the existing world directory before a reset. Include the whole folder, not just individual configuration files. Keep the copy outside the live server directory and record the old world name. If the new start behaves unexpectedly, stop the server and restore the backup or launch the old name again.
Pick a new, distinct save name
Use a short name that identifies the group or purpose, such as casual_2026 or hardcore_test. Avoid changing capitalization or punctuation between the panel field, launch argument and folder name; the server must resolve the same save name each time.
Panel-hosted servers: stop, rename, start
Most game-hosting panels expose the save name as a startup variable. The controls documented by GameHostBros and BisectHosting follow the same sequence, although your provider may use different menu labels.
- Stop the server. Wait until the panel reports that the process is offline rather than merely restarting.
- Open the startup settings. Look for a Startup tab and a field called World Name. Some panels put the equivalent under Settings > Advanced and call it World Save Name.
- Enter a new value. Replace the current name with the distinct save name you selected. Do not delete the existing value from your notes; you need it to switch back later.
- Save the setting. If the panel has an Apply, Save or Update button, use it before starting the server.
- Start the server. On startup, Abiotic Factor looks for the new name. Because it does not yet exist, the server generates a fresh world.
- Verify the result. Join with a test player, confirm that the facility is at its initial state, and check the server console for a successful world load. Do not judge the reset by the player list alone; a new save can still use the same server address and configuration.
Switching back to the previous world
Stop the server, restore the previous value in the same World Name or World Save Name field, save it, and start again. The original world should load with its prior progress. If it does not, stop immediately and check that the name matches the original spelling and that the old save folder was not moved or deleted.

If the panel has no world-name field
Some hosts hide startup variables or expose only a generic command-line editor. Search the panel’s startup, configuration or advanced settings for WorldSaveName. If the host does not expose it, ask support where the server’s launch arguments are edited, or use the self-managed procedure below if file and process access is available. Do not guess at an unrelated setting such as a map rotation or server description; those do not select the save.

For a server you run yourself, the save is selected by the command-line argument -WorldSaveName=<name>. The default world is reported as Cascade in the XGamingServer new-world guide. A new value creates another save without changing the old one.
Windows launch example
Add the argument to the same executable or batch file that normally starts the dedicated server:
-WorldSaveName=casual_2026Keep the hyphen and the equals sign. If your existing script has other arguments, append this one separated by a space. Stop the running server before editing the script, then start it normally. The first launch with a previously unused name creates the world; later launches with that name reopen it.
SteamCMD installation and app ID caution
The developer quickstart uses SteamCMD with anonymous login and app_update 2857200 validate; see the DFJacob AbioticFactorDedicatedServer quickstart. A separate setup guide also uses app ID 2857200 (Supercraft’s dedicated-server setup). Search results have also shown 2809400, while the game client is associated with 427410 and 2857120 has appeared without corroboration. Verify the current dedicated-server app ID in Steam or current developer documentation before running SteamCMD; do not substitute an unverified number because the download can fail or install the wrong depot.

The official dedicated-server tool is described as Windows-first. Linux operation is commonly handled through a Wine-based community workaround, so confirm current compatibility and instructions for your distribution before committing to a Linux deployment. The launch parameter and save-management principles remain the same, but executable paths, service files and permissions differ.
Confirming which save is active
After starting with a new name, inspect the server log for the world-load entry and check the save directory. If the server still opens the old facility, the process probably did not receive the edited argument, a second service is running, or the name was entered in a different startup script than the one actually used. Stop every server instance, verify the effective command, and start only the intended service.
Deleting a world folder: use only for an irreversible reset
Deleting the save folder forces regeneration with the same name, but all progress in that world is erased. The reported location is:
AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames/Server/Worlds/- Stop the server and confirm that no dedicated-server process remains.
- Copy the target world folder to a separate backup location.
- Open the
Worldsdirectory and identify the folder matching the save name. - Delete that folder only after verifying the backup.
- Start the server with the same
-WorldSaveNamevalue. A new world is generated under that name.
Folder locations can differ with the operating system, installation method and service account. Use the path relative to your actual Abiotic Factor installation rather than creating a second directory with the same text. If you want a reversible reset, leave the old folder intact and launch with a new name instead of deleting it.
Changing difficulty and other sandbox settings
Difficulty and similar sandbox options belong to the world save. They are not simply global server switches, so creating a new world is the cleanest way to apply a different setup. The settings file is reported as:

Safe sequence for editing sandbox values
- Start the newly named world once so its save and settings files are created.
- Stop the server fully.
- Back up the world directory.
- Open that world’s
SandboxSettings.iniwith a plain-text editor and change only the documented setting you intend to change. - Save the file without changing its name or extension.
- Start the server and test the setting with a small group before inviting everyone.
The file may not exist until the world has launched once; starting, stopping and then editing is the sequence suggested by the hosting documentation. Make sure you edit the folder for the new world, not the previous save. If the server regenerates the file or ignores a value, restore the backup and use the game’s current creation options or your host’s documented variables rather than adding arbitrary keys.

Troubleshooting a world that did not reset
The old base is still present
Check that the server was stopped before the name changed, that the new value was saved, and that the process started with the intended configuration. A typo that differs only by capitalization can create a different save than the one you expected, while an unchanged name necessarily opens the old world.
The panel keeps reverting the name
Some panels regenerate startup variables from a configuration template. Save the field, restart the panel session, and confirm the value remains before starting the server. If it is overwritten, contact the host for the supported variable name instead of editing generated files that the panel will replace.
The new world starts but the difficulty is unchanged
Confirm that you edited the new world’s directory and that the server was offline while the file was saved. Check the numeric value against the documented mapping, then restart. If the file was absent, create it only after the first launch has generated the save structure; do not modify the old world’s file by mistake.
The server fails after a file edit
Stop it, restore the backed-up world directory or the original settings file, and start again. Keep a copy of the edited file so you can identify the change, but do not leave an invalid or partially saved configuration in the live directory.

SteamCMD cannot install the server
Recheck the app ID against current official information, confirm SteamCMD can reach Steam, and ensure the install directory is writable by the account running the service. The strongest corroborated guidance in the available setup material uses 2857200, but app IDs can change, so verify before repeating the command.
Players cannot connect after the reset
First confirm that the server process is running and loading the intended save. Then check the address, port, firewall and any host-side allocation. Do not assume a particular player cap: published guidance conflicts, and limits can depend on the game version and provider configuration. Use the current official game documentation and your host’s panel for the applicable limit.
Final verification checklist
- The old world has a downloaded or copied backup.
- The server was stopped before any setting, script or file changed.
- The new save name is distinct and recorded.
- The panel’s World Name or World Save Name field, or the self-managed
-WorldSaveNameargument, contains that exact value. - The first launch completed and generated a fresh facility.
- The sandbox file was edited only after the new world existed and the server was stopped.
- You can return to the old world by restoring its original name.
- You verified the dedicated-server app ID and platform instructions from current official sources before installation.
Bottom line
Use a new save name rather than deleting a world. On a hosting panel, stop the server, change the World Name or World Save Name field, and start it; on a self-managed installation, launch with -WorldSaveName=<name>. Keep the old folder as a backup, and apply difficulty changes to the new world’s sandbox settings only after its save has been created.
