Yes—you can create mods for RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Jagex officially supports community modding, but the tools and workflows currently documented for creators are community-maintained, not one official Jagex mod SDK. Start by choosing what your mod changes, then follow the matching format’s instructions and test it on a backed-up or new world.
Is modding RuneScape: Dragonwilds allowed?
Yes, within Jagex’s conditions. The Jagex End User Licence Agreement describes a limited, revocable, non-commercial license for creating Dragonwilds modifications. Jagex’s modding guidelines welcome community creations, and a July 2025 Jagex update described modding as “possible, supported and encouraged” (This Month In Ashenfall: July 25).

The permission has important limits. You must own or have permission to use included content, and you cannot commercially exploit a mod. The guidelines also prohibit paid mods, paywalled features, ads, affiliate links embedded in mods, disruptive behavior, multiplayer cheating, misleading claims of Jagex endorsement, and changes that overwrite or conflict with core game files. Jagex says it does not audit, regulate, or approve mods; creating and using them is at your own risk. Read the current EULA and guidelines before publishing.

Dragonwilds community documentation describes several different formats; they do not share one authoring or installation process. The following distinctions are summarized in the CurseForge Dragonwilds modding guide and related community documentation.
#1 Best Overall

| Format | Typical use | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Pak | Packaged Unreal Engine content, including assets and packaged changes. | Match the game build. Keep associated .pak, .utoc, and .ucas files together when the project uses them. |
| UE4SS | Some scripted or native projects that use this community loader/framework. | Install it only when the mod requires it. Check loader and game-version compatibility, and preserve the author’s folder structure. |
| RuneSchema | Data-driven add-ons configured as JSON. | The documented setup depends on UE4SS and RuneSchema; follow the mod’s stated installation order and dependencies. |
| Save files | Shared worlds or characters rather than a conventional code or content mod. | Back up your existing saves and check exactly what the imported file contains. |
These are community-documented paths, not a Jagex-endorsed universal toolchain. The community-created RSDW Dev Kit documents a kit/mod/field organization and features such as editing world settings. Check its project page for current releases and compatibility before building around it.
Plan a small first mod
Pick one change that you can clearly describe and verify. Jagex’s guidelines welcome system extensions such as UI or quality-of-life improvements, deeper gameplay features, localization, optimization and unofficial fixes, as well as additions that do not overwrite or break existing content. Custom assets should be your own or used with permission.
Rank #2
- Write down what the mod changes and what it deliberately leaves untouched.
- Decide whether the change calls for packaged Unreal content, a UE4SS-based project, a RuneSchema add-on, or a save file.
- Check an existing project in the same format to learn its expected structure, dependencies, version requirements, and installation method.
There is no single official beginner SDK or universal source-code tutorial established for all Dragonwilds mod types. Treat community framework and kit documentation as format-specific guidance, not as official Jagex tooling.
Build and test without risking your world
- Check the game build and dependencies. Read the target project or framework page, confirm its stated game-version compatibility, and install only the required tools. Community tooling can stop working after a game update.
- Keep original game files intact. Follow the instructions for your specific format and avoid overwriting or deleting core files. Do not assume that one format’s folder path applies to another.
- Confirm the unmodded game works first. Launch the game before adding unfamiliar files. This gives you a baseline if a later change causes a crash or other problem.
- Back up saves and test in isolation. Use a new world or a backed-up copy. Add one unfamiliar mod at a time, launch the game, and check the behavior the mod claims to change.
- Look for failures and isolate them. Watch for crashes, missing assets, unexpected menus, or multiplayer connection errors. If something breaks, disable or remove the newest mod first and retest.
Be especially careful with multiplayer: do not use mods to cheat, disrupt other players, or violate Jagex policies. Check a mod’s own description for multiplayer behavior before joining a shared session.

Document and share your mod responsibly
Give users enough information to decide whether a mod is compatible and safe for their setup. Include clear installation and removal steps, dependencies, the game versions you intend to support, and any critical gameplay changes. Credit reused work and obtain permission for assets you did not create. Do not claim Jagex approval unless Jagex has actually provided it.
CurseForge is one documented place to publish Dragonwilds projects. Its 2026 contest page describes a time-limited opportunity for projects compatible with version 1.0: entrants publish on CurseForge and submit the project link through the contest form, with a listed deadline of October 13, 2026. That is a contest requirement, not a permanent condition for publishing a mod; check the contest page for current terms. Any host’s rules apply alongside Jagex’s requirements.
