When a dashboard needs to show a compact, formatted view of a table that lives elsewhere in a workbook, Excel’s Camera command can place a picture of that cell range on the dashboard. Unlike a screenshot, the linked picture reflects changes made to its source cells. It is a picture of worksheet data—not a new chart type or a separate copy of the data.
What an Excel linked picture does
A linked picture displays a selected cell range as a graphic elsewhere in the workbook. Microsoft Support explains that changes to the linked cells automatically appear in the graphic. That makes it useful when a dashboard needs a view of an existing range without rearranging the source table.

The picture can be formatted as a picture. For example, Microsoft documents changing its border or making its background transparent. The official instructions cover Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, and Excel 2021.
How to create a linked picture with Camera
- Add Camera to the Quick Access Toolbar if it is not there: click the toolbar’s arrow, choose More Commands, set Choose commands from to All Commands, select Camera, click Add, then click OK.
- Select the cell range you want the dashboard to display.
- Click Camera on the Quick Access Toolbar.
- Click the destination on a worksheet or chart. Excel places a picture of the selected range there.
- To adjust the graphic, right-click it and choose the relevant picture operation or formatting option.
Microsoft’s instructions and version scope are on its Camera command support page.

Choose the right Excel image method
| Method | What it displays | Does it follow worksheet data? | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|---|
| Camera / linked range picture | A picture of a selected cell range | Yes. Changes to the source range appear in the graphic. | As a picture placed on a worksheet or chart |
| Copy as Picture | A static picture of worksheet cells, a chart, or an object | No. It is a snapshot, not a live link to the source range. | Pasted as a picture |
| IMAGE function | An image loaded from an HTTPS URL | No. It is not a picture linked to worksheet cells. | Inside a cell |
For a static snapshot, use Home → Copy → Copy as Picture, choose the appearance and format in the dialog, then paste. Microsoft recommends As shown on screen and Picture for best quality; the pasted copy is at 100% of its original size. If gridlines should not appear in a copied range, turn them off first under View → Show → Gridlines. See Microsoft’s Copy a picture support page.
For a URL-sourced image inside a cell, Microsoft’s IMAGE function uses the syntax =IMAGE(source, [alt_text], [sizing], [height], [width]). The source must be an HTTPS image URL. Microsoft says URLs requiring authentication or redirects do not render, and external-content security settings may block images. Custom dimensions can distort the image’s aspect ratio, so provide alternative text and use dimensions carefully. This function is documented for Microsoft 365 and Excel 2024 on the platforms listed by Microsoft; it does not replace Camera for showing a worksheet range. See Microsoft’s IMAGE function documentation.

If the dashboard picture is not what you expected
- Check that you selected the intended source cells before clicking Camera.
- Confirm you used the Camera command for a linked range picture. Copy as Picture creates a static snapshot instead.
