“Chrome shortcut” can mean either an icon that launches the Chrome browser or an icon that opens a specific website in Chrome. Choose the result you want first: pin Chrome to your taskbar, Dock, or Linux favorites to launch the browser; use Chrome’s shortcut commands to save a website; or install a supported site as a web app for a more app-like window.
Choose the shortcut you actually need
| Goal | Use this method |
|---|---|
| Launch Chrome on Windows | Pin Chrome to the taskbar |
| Launch Chrome on macOS | Add Chrome to the Dock |
| Launch Chrome on Linux | Add Chrome to Dash or Favorites |
| Open a website on Windows, Mac, or Linux | Use Create shortcut… |
| Open a website on Android | Use Install and create shortcut |
| Open a website on iPhone or iPad | Use Add to Home Screen |
| Use a supported site like a separate app | Use Install page as app… (or Android’s install option) |
Create a shortcut that launches Google Chrome
Windows: pin Chrome to the taskbar
- Open Chrome.
- Right-click the Chrome icon on the taskbar.
- Select Pin to taskbar.
You can also pin it without opening Chrome: open Start, find Chrome, right-click it, and choose Pin to taskbar. If the taskbar has no room, unpin an application first. These are Google’s documented Windows methods: Chrome Help.

Pinning creates a taskbar launcher, not necessarily a traditional desktop .lnk file. If you specifically need a desktop icon, use Windows’ own desktop-shortcut tools rather than treating taskbar pinning as the same operation.

- Locate the Chrome application, usually in the Applications folder.
- Drag Chrome to the Dock.
This adds a Dock launcher for Chrome itself; it does not save a shortcut to a particular website. Google’s platform instructions are at Chrome Help. If the Dock is crowded, move or remove another item.

Linux: add Chrome to Dash or Favorites
- Open your desktop environment’s application menu.
- Find Chrome and right-click it.
- Choose Pin to Dash or Add to Favorites.
Linux distributions use different launchers, so the equivalent command may have a slightly different name. Google’s documented labels are Dash and Favorites: Chrome Help.
Chromebook note
Chrome is built into ChromeOS, so Chromebook users generally manage a launcher or shelf icon rather than installing a separate Chrome browser. The Windows, Mac, and Linux procedure above should not be assumed to apply unchanged.
Create a shortcut to a website in Chrome
Windows, macOS, and Linux
- Open Chrome and visit the website.
- Select More (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Cast, save and share.
- Select Create shortcut….
- Change the name if you want, then select Create.
The resulting icon opens that website. Google documents this path for Windows, Mac, and Linux at Chrome Help. Menu placement can vary with Chrome releases, language, operating system, and staged interface changes, so start from the three-dot More menu if the wording is not identical.

Android
- Open Chrome and go to the website.
- Tap More to the right of the address bar.
- Choose Install and create shortcut.
- Select Create shortcut.
- Rename it if desired, then tap Add.
This normally places the site icon on the Home screen. Google says a shortcut showing the Chrome logo opens in Chrome: Android instructions. Home-screen layouts differ by manufacturer, so check other Home-screen pages, folders, or the app drawer if you do not see it immediately.
iPhone and iPad
- Open Chrome and visit the website.
- Tap Share to the right of the address bar.
- Choose Add to Home Screen.
- Edit the name or details if needed.
- Tap Add.
This creates a Home Screen website shortcut; it is not automatically a full native iOS app. See Google’s steps at Chrome Help.
Use a website as a Chrome web app
A normal shortcut simply opens a site. A web app can open in a more app-like window and may expose capabilities such as notifications, file-system access, icon badges, or some offline storage when the site supports them. Google notes that support is site-dependent and that some web apps may not work completely offline: Chrome web-app help.

Install a web app on Windows, Mac, or Linux
- Open the website in Chrome.
- Select More.
- Choose Cast, save and share, then Install page as app….
- If an Install icon appears in the address bar, you can select it instead.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
This is separate from Create shortcut…. Choose the ordinary shortcut when you only need quick access; choose installation when you want the site to behave more like a standalone application.

This workflow applies to apps already listed in Chrome’s app-management page: Chrome Help.
Android web-app installation
On Android, a supported site may offer Install and create shortcut → Install instead of Create shortcut. Installation can provide a more app-like experience, but available features depend on the site. Google’s Android guidance is at Chrome Help.

Troubleshoot missing or unexpected shortcuts
“Create shortcut” is missing
- Confirm that you are viewing a normal website, not a Chrome internal page.
- Open the three-dot More menu and inspect Cast, save and share.
- If you want an app-like installation, look for an Install icon in the address bar or Install page as app….
- Make sure you are using desktop Chrome; Android and iPhone use different menus.
- For an existing Chrome app, open
chrome://appsand use its context menu. - Restart or update Chrome if the interface appears incomplete. Availability can depend on the current release and feature rollout.
The icon is not visible
Check the Windows taskbar or Start menu, the macOS Dock or Applications folder, the Linux launcher or favorites area, Android Home-screen pages and folders, or the iPhone/iPad Home Screen and App Library.
The shortcut has the wrong name
Desktop Chrome lets you name the shortcut before creation (desktop instructions). Android lets you rename it in the creation dialog (Android instructions), and iPhone/iPad lets you edit the details before tapping Add (iOS instructions).
The shortcut opens in an unexpected browser
Pinning or creating an icon and changing the operating system’s default browser are separate actions. A shortcut created by Chrome may still follow system associations, depending on the platform and how the icon was saved. Check your operating system’s default-browser setting if opening behavior matters.

Remove a web app
On Windows, Mac, or Linux, open the web app, select More, choose Uninstall [app name], select Remove, and optionally delete the app’s Chrome data. Chromebook removal uses the launcher: right-click the web-app icon, choose Uninstall, and decide whether to delete browsing data. Google lists these controls at Chrome Help.
