A free multi-level dropdown menu puts related links beneath a parent navigation item, but every destination still needs a usable route—on desktop, on touchscreens, and with a keyboard. You can build one with custom HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, or adapt a Bootstrap 5 example. Bootstrap’s standard dropdown is a useful component, not a complete nested-navigation solution; plan and test the submenu behavior separately.
What a multi-level dropdown menu does
A navigation hierarchy groups links by topic. A top-level item can reveal a submenu, and a submenu item can reveal another level. For example, “Services” might open “Design,” which in turn opens links to specific services. Each hidden destination should remain reachable even if a visitor cannot or does not use the fly-out interaction.

More levels can make a large site’s navigation compact, but they also make destinations harder to discover and interact with. Use nested levels only where the grouping genuinely helps visitors; do not treat depth as a substitute for clear labels or a sensible site structure.
Choose an implementation approach
| Approach | What you need | Key decisions |
|---|---|---|
| Custom HTML, CSS, and JavaScript | Your own markup, styling, and interaction logic. | Choose an explicit control for opening each submenu, define keyboard and focus behavior, make the layout work on small screens, and provide another route to submenu links. |
| Bootstrap-based | Bootstrap components and the relevant JavaScript plugins, plus any additional nested-menu behavior your design needs. | Bootstrap dropdowns are click-toggled overlays; the responsive navbar relies on the Collapse plugin. Confirm how nested controls work with keyboard, touch, and the collapsed mobile layout rather than assuming the basic components provide a finished multilevel menu. |
These are decision points, not a claim that one approach is universally more accessible or easier to maintain. Bootstrap’s official dropdown documentation describes a generic dropdown component and its keyboard behavior, while the navbar documentation describes responsive collapse behavior. Neither makes every third-party nested-menu pattern a tested, accessible navigation system. Bootstrap dropdown documentation (v5.3) and Bootstrap navbar documentation (v5.1)

How to start with a Bootstrap 5 multilevel example
A third-party page provides a free Bootstrap 5 multilevel navbar dropdown example. Treat it as a starting point, not as a guarantee of current compatibility, accessibility, or support. Review and adapt the code to your site before relying on it.
- Check the framework setup. Confirm the example’s Bootstrap version and required CSS and JavaScript match the version already used by your site. Avoid loading conflicting or duplicate framework assets.
- Map the menu hierarchy. List each parent, submenu, and destination. Check that labels describe the links and that the structure does not bury important pages several interactions deep.
- Review the opening controls. Determine whether each submenu opens on click, hover, or an explicit button. Bootstrap dropdowns are click-toggled; a demo’s additional nested behavior may be implemented separately.
- Test keyboard and focus behavior. Navigate through the menu without a pointer, open and close each level, and check that focus remains visible and predictable. Bootstrap documents standard keyboard support for its dropdown component, including cursor-key movement through dropdown items and Escape to close; this is a starting point, not proof that nested navigation in a demo works correctly.
- Test touch and narrow layouts. Open every level by touch and check that controls are easy to activate and do not depend on hover. Test the collapsed navbar as well as the expanded desktop layout. Responsive navbar behavior depends on Bootstrap’s Collapse JavaScript plugin; nested interactions need their own verification.
- Keep a route to every destination. Provide another way to reach submenu pages, such as links on the relevant parent page, so a hidden fly-out is not the only route.

Make the navigation usable beyond the demo
Use clear submenu indicators
Visitors should be able to tell which navigation items open a submenu. Indicate this visually and in the markup, and make the control understandable without relying on a hover effect alone. W3C WAI’s fly-out menu guidance recommends clear visual and markup indication for items with submenus and other ways to reach submenu destinations. W3C WAI: Fly-out Menus
Choose navigation semantics deliberately
A website navigation list is not automatically an application-style menu widget. Bootstrap notes that its generic dropdown component does not automatically supply the ARIA roles and attributes required for application-like menus. Do not add those roles merely because the links appear in a dropdown; choose semantics appropriate to the actual navigation, then verify the resulting interaction and markup.

Test the complete interaction
- Can visitors open and close each submenu with the intended input method?
- Can keyboard users reach each link, see where focus is, and escape the open interaction?
- Can touch users activate the submenu controls without hover?
- Does the collapsed navbar remain usable at the viewport sizes your site supports?
- Is every submenu destination available by another route, such as the relevant parent page?
- Do visual and markup cues identify which items have submenus?
These checks help expose failures in a particular implementation; passing them alone is not an accessibility certification.
