What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Create the textured image in any image editor, save it to Photos, then select it through Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos. You can use the image as a matched Lock Screen and Home Screen pair or configure each screen separately. Apple does not provide a universal texture recipe, canvas size, or export setting, so the creative work happens before the image enters the iPhone wallpaper tool.
What you need before you start
This project has two independent parts: making a finished image with the appearance you want, and assigning that image as wallpaper. The iPhone handles the second part; it does not need to generate the texture itself.

- An iPhone with the wallpaper controls described below.
- An image editor of your choice. It can be a drawing, photo-editing, or design app you already use; no particular app is required by Apple’s wallpaper instructions.
- Access to Photos, because the standard wallpaper picker selects a custom picture from your photo library.
- A clear idea of whether the same artwork should appear on both screens or whether the Home Screen needs a quieter variation.
Apple’s documentation does not prescribe a universal pixel dimension, file type, or export profile for every iPhone model. Rather than forcing one setting onto all devices, make the artwork large enough for the target phone in the editor you use, inspect Apple’s preview, and adjust the crop there.

A texture that looks subtle on a large monitor can become visual noise behind app icons. Build the image around how it will be viewed on a Lock Screen and a Home Screen, not just how it looks while zoomed in during editing.

Choose a base color and contrast range
Start with the dominant color or gradient you want to see across the screen. A restrained range of tones leaves room for the clock, notifications, widgets, and app labels. If the texture is already high contrast, keep the base color simpler; if the texture is delicate, a stronger color difference can keep it visible after cropping.
Add one or more texture layers
Use the tools available in your editor to introduce the surface character you want: for example, fine grain, paper fibers, brush marks, fabric-like variation, or a pattern you drew yourself. Keep the texture on its own layer when the editor supports layers. That makes it possible to reduce its strength without rebuilding the base artwork.
Control texture strength
Reduce opacity, intensity, or contrast until the surface detail supports the image rather than competing with it. Check the artwork at the approximate size of a phone screen and at normal viewing brightness. A texture should still be recognizable, but individual marks do not need to remain obvious everywhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesProtect areas used by the interface
Leave calmer areas where the time, date, widgets, and app icons will sit. Fine detail directly behind white or colored lettering can reduce legibility. If your editor offers a blur, mask, gradient, or low-opacity overlay, use it locally rather than flattening the entire design.
Check both light and dark surroundings
Look at the image against the interface style you intend to use. A pale, busy texture can make dark icons hard to pick out; a very dark field can swallow dark text. This is a visual check rather than an Apple requirement, but it prevents the most common failure: a beautiful texture that makes the phone difficult to read.
Finish and save the image to Photos
- Complete the texture and color adjustments in your chosen editor.
- Review the full image, not just a zoomed-in section. Look for seams, accidental brush marks, abrupt edges, or a pattern that becomes distracting when repeated.
- Use the editor’s normal save or export command to create the finished image. Apple’s wallpaper guides do not specify one mandatory export format or quality setting.
- Save or share the finished image into the iPhone’s Photos library. Wait for the image to appear there before opening the wallpaper picker.
- Open Photos and confirm that the saved picture is the final version, rather than an earlier draft or a temporary preview.
If the image is missing from Photos, finish the editor’s export step first and check that you saved to the device’s photo library rather than only inside the editing app. The wallpaper picker can only choose media that is available to it through Photos.

Set the textured image as wallpaper from Settings
This is Apple’s full, documented route and gives you a preview before you commit the change.
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper.
- Choose Photos from the available wallpaper sources.
- Select the textured image you saved. The customization view opens with a preview.
- Move or adjust the image in the preview until the crop places the important texture and quiet areas where you want them. Use the preview to check the clock, widgets, and icons rather than relying only on the editor’s canvas.
- Tap Add.
- Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair if the same image should be used on the Lock Screen and Home Screen. If you want different treatments, choose the option that lets you customize the Home Screen separately and make those changes before finishing.
The exact wording or arrangement of controls can change with an iOS update, but the workflow remains selecting a photo, previewing it, adding it, and deciding whether the two screens share the result.
Open the wallpaper gallery from the Lock Screen
You do not have to begin in Settings. Apple also documents opening the wallpaper gallery by touching and holding the Lock Screen.
- Wake the iPhone and remain on the Lock Screen.
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen until the wallpaper gallery appears.
- Tap the add control for a new wallpaper, then choose Photos.
- Select the textured image, adjust its position in the preview, and tap Add.
- Set it as a pair or continue to the separate Home Screen customization, depending on the result you want.
This route is useful when you are already checking how the artwork looks with the clock and Lock Screen widgets. If the touch-and-hold gesture does not open the gallery, use the Settings path instead.
Use the shorter Photos sharing route
Apple’s developer instructions describe a direct route from the Photos app:
- Open the finished image in Photos.
- Tap Share.
- Tap Use as Wallpaper.
- Adjust the preview, then finish the wallpaper setup and choose whether to apply it to both screens or customize the Home Screen separately.
This command may not appear in exactly the same place on every iOS release. If you do not see Use as Wallpaper, the Settings route is the reliable fallback. Both routes ultimately use the same wallpaper customization view.

Decide whether one image should serve both screens
| Choice | What happens | When it works best |
|---|---|---|
| Set as Wallpaper Pair | The selected image is used for the Lock Screen and Home Screen. | Your texture has enough open space and contrast to support both the clock and a grid of app icons. |
| Customize the Home Screen separately | You keep the Lock Screen artwork and create a different Home Screen treatment during setup. | You want a cleaner, dimmer, blurred, or otherwise less distracting background behind icons. |
Make this decision after looking at Apple’s preview. The Lock Screen usually benefits from a clear focal area around the clock, while the Home Screen has many labels and icons competing with the background. A single texture can work for both, but it does not have to.
Correct cropping and positioning in the preview
There is no single crop that fits every iPhone model and orientation. The wallpaper preview is the final authority for the device in your hand.
Keep the focal detail visible
Drag the image so the most interesting part of the texture is not hidden by the clock, widgets, or the icon grid. If the editor’s original composition depends on an edge or border, check that the edge has not moved outside the preview.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Watch for accidental zooming
A texture can become much coarser when enlarged. Compare the preview with the original image in Photos. If the grain or pattern looks blocky, return to the editor and make a less magnified version rather than accepting a distracting crop.
Check the top and bottom areas
Interface elements occupy different parts of the Lock Screen and Home Screen. Inspect the top behind the time and the lower area behind notifications or icons. A clean center in the editor does not guarantee clean areas at the edges after the phone’s crop is applied.
Preview before tapping Add
Apple’s flow includes an adjustment preview specifically so you can position the photo before committing it. Spend a moment switching your attention between texture detail and interface readability; moving the image slightly can be more effective than weakening the entire texture.

Make the texture readable without making the interface hard to read
- For dense patterns: lower opacity or contrast in the areas behind text and icons.
- For very fine grain: enlarge the texture detail slightly in the source image so it does not disappear completely after cropping.
- For high-color artwork: reserve a lower-detail region for widgets and labels.
- For monochrome designs: use value differences rather than relying only on hue, because similar brightness levels can merge under icons.
- For a photographic texture: choose a crop with a relatively even background behind the interface, while leaving the distinctive detail elsewhere.
These are design checks, not mandatory iPhone settings. The goal is to preserve the character of the texture while ensuring that the phone remains easy to operate.
Optional: use a 3D spatial wallpaper effect
Apple Support’s February 4, 2026 guidance describes 3D spatial wallpapers for eligible photos on iPhone 12 or later with iOS 26. Eligibility depends on the photo and the device. This is an optional effect applied to certain photos; it is not required to create or use a textured still image.
A texture you designed from scratch may not qualify as an eligible spatial photo, and the ordinary custom-photo workflow remains the appropriate choice when you want a flat, controlled surface. Treat spatial conversion as an extra experiment only after the standard wallpaper has been set successfully.
Troubleshoot the most common problems
The image does not appear in the wallpaper picker
Return to Photos and verify that the editor actually saved the finished image to the library. If you exported only inside the editing app, repeat the save or share step to Photos, then reopen the picker.
The texture looks different after setting it
Compare the editor’s full-image view with Apple’s wallpaper preview. The phone may crop or enlarge the picture, changing the apparent scale of the texture. Reposition the image first. If the texture is still too strong, edit a softer version and save it as a new photo.

Use the preview to identify the problem area, then create a calmer region in the source image by reducing local contrast, adding a subtle overlay, or moving the texture detail away from that area. If the Lock Screen is readable but the Home Screen is not, configure the Home Screen separately instead of weakening the Lock Screen artwork.
Best Value
The direct Share option is missing
Interface labels vary by iOS version. Open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos and select the same image there.
The Lock Screen looks right but the Home Screen feels busy
Choose the separate Home Screen customization during setup and use a quieter treatment for the icon grid. You can preserve the original textured image on the Lock Screen while reducing visual competition behind apps.
The spatial option is unavailable
Spatial wallpaper requires an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 26 and an eligible photo. If any of those conditions is not met, use the normal still-photo wallpaper process; the texture itself does not depend on spatial support.

What Apple’s wallpaper workflow does—and does not—do
| Task | Handled by | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Create the visual texture | Your image editor | You choose the colors, surface detail, layering, and contrast. Apple’s wallpaper pages do not prescribe a texture-making technique. |
| Store the finished artwork | Photos | The image must be available in the photo library for the standard picker. |
| Select and position the wallpaper | iPhone wallpaper settings | You choose Photos, preview the crop, adjust the position, and add the wallpaper. |
| Apply it to screens | Wallpaper customization | You can use a Wallpaper Pair or customize the Home Screen separately. |
| Add a spatial effect | Supported iPhone and iOS features | Only eligible photos on iPhone 12 or later with iOS 26 can use the documented 3D spatial option. |
There is no Apple setting that automatically invents a paper, fabric, grain, or other texture from a plain color. If the source image has no texture, the wallpaper picker will simply display that plain image.
A dependable repeatable workflow
- Decide whether the artwork is primarily for the Lock Screen, the Home Screen, or both.
- Create the image in an editor, keeping texture detail and interface-safe areas in mind.
- Save the finished version to Photos and verify that it is the correct file.
- Open the wallpaper picker from Settings, the Lock Screen gallery, or Photos sharing.
- Choose the image, inspect its crop, and move it until the important detail is visible.
- Tap Add, then select a pair or separate Home Screen customization.
- Check the real Lock Screen and Home Screen after setup. If readability or scale is wrong, revise the source image and repeat the process.
The creative portion is intentionally independent of Apple’s interface: you can change editors, colors, and texture techniques without changing the iPhone steps. The device-specific portion is the preview, positioning, and decision about how the two screens should be configured.
