In Namecheap, create an A record that maps the subdomain to your server’s IP address, then create an SRV record that tells Minecraft which port to use. The domain must use Namecheap BasicDNS, FreeDNS, or PremiumDNS nameservers. DNS changes may work within minutes, but allow up to 24 hours for propagation.

What a custom Minecraft server address actually is
A custom address is a DNS hostname, not a new IP address. For example, players might connect to mc.example.com. DNS translates that name into the numerical address of your server and, when an SRV record is present, supplies the server port as well.

The two records have different jobs:
- A record: maps a name such as
mc.example.comto the server’s IP address. Enter only the IP address here; do not append a colon and port. - SRV record: identifies the Minecraft service, transport protocol, priority, weight, and the port where the server listens. Its target is a hostname, not an IP address.
Both records are needed for the usual “join by name without typing a port” setup. If you omit the SRV record, the hostname may resolve to the machine but Minecraft will not know which non-default port to use.
Before you change anything in Namecheap
Confirm the domain’s nameservers
Namecheap’s SRV records work only when the domain is using Namecheap BasicDNS, FreeDNS, or PremiumDNS nameservers. Sign in to Namecheap, open the domain, and check the nameserver setting before editing records. If another DNS provider is authoritative for the domain, create the equivalent records there instead; entries added in Namecheap’s DNS panel will not control the live domain in that situation.

Collect the values you will enter
Have the following information ready:
- The public IP address of the Minecraft server.
- The port on which that server actually listens. This is often different from the default port, so copy it from the server configuration or hosting panel rather than guessing.
- The subdomain players will use, such as
mcinmc.example.com. - The full hostname you want the SRV record to target, normally the same hostname created by the A record.
The A-record value must be an IP address with no port suffix. For example, enter 203.0.113.45, not 203.0.113.45:25570. The SRV target must be a name such as mc.example.com, not 203.0.113.45.
Record values at a glance
| Record | Field | Example | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Host | mc |
Creates mc.example.com. |
| A | Value | 203.0.113.45 |
Your server IP only; no port. |
| A | TTL | Automatic | Lets Namecheap choose the cache lifetime. |
| SRV | Service | _minecraft |
Identifies the Minecraft service. |
| SRV | Protocol | _tcp or the panel’s subdomain-qualified form |
Identifies TCP and, in some Namecheap layouts, carries the subdomain. |
| SRV | Priority | 0 |
Preferred priority for this destination. |
| SRV | Weight | 5 |
Weight value used when records share a priority. |
| SRV | Port | Your actual server port | The port players should reach. |
| SRV | Target | mc.example.com |
Hostname of the destination; never an IP address. |
| SRV | TTL | Automatic | Uses Namecheap’s automatic TTL setting. |
The exact labels in Namecheap’s Advanced DNS editor can change. Treat the values above as the data to preserve, and verify the completed record after saving.
Step 1: Open Advanced DNS
- Sign in to Namecheap and open Domain List.
- Select Manage next to the domain you want to use.
- Open the Advanced DNS tab.
- Confirm that the active nameservers are BasicDNS, FreeDNS, or PremiumDNS. If they are not, stop here and edit DNS at the provider shown by the nameserver setting.
Do not delete unrelated records while making this change. Existing records may support a website, email, verification service, or another application.
Step 2: Add the A record for the server hostname
- In Host Records, choose Add New Record.
- Select A Record as the record type.
- For Host, enter the short subdomain, for example
mc. Namecheap appends your domain, producingmc.example.com. - For Value, enter the server’s public IP address without
:port. - Leave TTL set to Automatic (or use the available 30-minute setting if the current interface presents that option).
- Save the record.
After saving, the A record should read conceptually as mc.example.com → 203.0.113.45. If you accidentally enter a port, a URL, or a private address from your home network, the record will not provide the intended public destination.

Step 3: Add the Minecraft SRV record
- Choose Add New Record again in Advanced DNS.
- Select SRV Record.
- Enter
_minecraftin the Service field. - Enter
_tcpin the Protocol field unless the form specifically requires the subdomain-qualified syntax described below. - Set Priority to
0. - Set Weight to
5. - Enter the server’s real listening port in Port.
- Enter the full hostname, such as
mc.example.com, in Target. Do not enter an IP address in this field. - Leave TTL at Automatic, then save the record.
Where should the subdomain go?
Namecheap’s SRV form has been described differently by different guides and interface versions. One layout places the subdomain in the record’s Name or Host field. Other layouts require the subdomain to be attached to the protocol value, producing a value such as _tcp.mc. The service remains _minecraft; only the location of mc changes.
Use the field names shown in your current form, save the record, and inspect the saved row. For the example above, the effective owner name must represent the Minecraft TCP service for mc.example.com—conceptually _minecraft._tcp.mc.example.com. If the saved row omits mc, places it in the wrong component, or shows a malformed name, edit the record and try the other placement supported by the form.
Because the subdomain placement has varied, do not assume that a record accepted by the editor is correct. A DNS SRV lookup for _minecraft._tcp.mc.example.com should return the target hostname and port you entered. Check the record after caches have had time to update.
Step 4: Test the address before sharing it
- Wait for the record to become visible outside your account; a local panel can show a saved record before public DNS caches have refreshed.
- Use an SRV lookup service or a command-line DNS utility to query
_minecraft._tcp.mc.example.com. Confirm that the response contains the expected target hostname and port. - Resolve the A record for
mc.example.comand confirm that it returns the server’s public IP. - In Minecraft, add a server using only
mc.example.com. Do not add:portwhen testing the SRV setup. - If the hostname does not connect, test the numerical IP and port directly. A direct connection distinguishes a DNS problem from a server, firewall, or hosting problem.
Players may still use the numerical address and port while DNS is propagating. Once the SRV response is visible and the server is reachable directly, the hostname is the preferred address to distribute.

How long Namecheap DNS changes take
Propagation is not a single switch that updates everywhere at once. Recursive DNS servers cache old and new answers for different periods. In the best case, the change appears within a few minutes. Some networks may continue using the previous answer for much longer; allow up to 24 hours before treating a recent edit as globally failed.
Namecheap commonly presents an automatic or 30-minute TTL, while other DNS guidance describes updates in roughly one to five minutes or, in slower cases, as long as a day. Those figures are timing ranges, not guarantees. Avoid repeatedly deleting and recreating records during the waiting period, because each edit can create another cache cycle.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The hostname cannot be resolved. | The domain is not using Namecheap DNS, the A record is wrong, or propagation is incomplete. | Check the active nameservers, confirm the A record host and IP, and test again after caches refresh. |
| The hostname resolves, but Minecraft reports an inability to connect. | The SRV record is missing, malformed, or points to the wrong port. | Query _minecraft._tcp.mc.example.com; compare the returned target and port with the server configuration. |
| A lookup returns the IP, but the SRV lookup returns nothing. | The subdomain was placed in the wrong SRV field. | Edit the record and use the form’s alternate Host/Protocol placement, then verify the saved owner name. |
| The SRV lookup returns an IP as the target. | An IP was entered in the Target field. | Replace it with the full hostname created by the A record, such as mc.example.com. |
| Direct IP-and-port connection also fails. | The issue is outside DNS: the server may be offline, listening on another port, or blocked by a firewall or network policy. | Confirm the server process, configured port, public reachability, and firewall rules before changing DNS again. |
| Some players connect while others cannot. | Different DNS resolvers still hold cached data. | Compare results from more than one network and allow the full propagation window. |
| The address worked, then stopped after an IP change. | The A record still contains the previous public IP. | Update the A record to the new IP; the SRV target normally remains the same hostname. |
Running more than one Minecraft server
Use a distinct hostname for each server, for example survival.example.com and creative.example.com. Each hostname needs its own A record pointing to the appropriate server address, and each Minecraft service needs an SRV record that identifies its own port and target hostname.
| Server | A-record host | SRV target | SRV port |
|---|---|---|---|
| Survival | survival |
survival.example.com |
That server’s configured port |
| Creative | creative |
creative.example.com |
That server’s configured port |
Do not point both names at one shared A record unless both services genuinely use the same destination. Keep each SRV target aligned with the hostname whose A record supplies that destination.

Changing the server port or IP later
When only the port changes
Edit the SRV record’s Port value and leave the A record and SRV target unchanged. Players can continue using the same hostname after DNS caches update.

Edit the A record’s Value to the new IP. Keep the SRV target as the hostname, not the old numerical address. This is one reason the hostname target is important: the SRV record does not need to be rewritten every time the address behind the name changes.
When the subdomain changes
Create a new A record and a matching SRV record for the new hostname. Verify the new owner name carefully, especially the subdomain placement in Namecheap’s SRV editor, before retiring the old records.
Final verification checklist
- The domain uses BasicDNS, FreeDNS, or PremiumDNS nameservers.
- The A record’s Host is the intended subdomain.
- The A record’s Value is the public server IP with no port.
- The SRV Service is
_minecraft. - The SRV Protocol is
_tcp, with the subdomain included in the panel’s required field or syntax. - Priority is
0and Weight is5. - The SRV Port matches the server’s actual listening port.
- The SRV Target is the full hostname, never an IP address.
- The saved record resolves as
_minecraft._tcp... - You tested the hostname without appending a port and allowed time for DNS propagation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put the port in the A record?
No. An A record contains only an IP address. The SRV record carries the Minecraft port. Entering address:port in the A-record value creates an invalid value for this purpose.
Best Value
Why does the SRV Target need a hostname instead of an IP?
The SRV record is designed to point to a named destination. Use the hostname created by your A record, such as mc.example.com; do not substitute the numerical server address.
Do I need to type the port after the hostname in Minecraft?
When the SRV record is correct and visible, players should be able to enter the hostname alone. A direct hostname:port test can still be useful for diagnosing the server, but it bypasses the purpose of the SRV record.
What if Namecheap accepts the record but it still does not work?
Check the saved record’s effective name and run an SRV lookup for _minecraft._tcp.. The most common Namecheap-specific mistake is putting the subdomain in a different field from the one required by that version of the form. Also confirm that the domain’s nameservers are one of Namecheap’s supported DNS options and that the server works by direct IP and port.
How quickly should I tell players about the new address?
Wait until both the A and SRV lookups return the intended values from outside your local network. Some resolvers update within minutes, while others may retain old answers for up to 24 hours.

Why does the SRV Target need a hostname instead of an IP?
SRV targets are hostnames. Use the hostname created by the A record, not the numerical server address.
What if Namecheap accepts the record but it still does not work?
Inspect the saved SRV owner name, verify the subdomain placement, confirm supported Namecheap nameservers, and test the server directly by IP and port.
