A private server for friends on your home network needs only the first three steps. A server that appears in the public browser also needs a Steam Game Server Login Token (GSLT) for app 730, and it must be reachable from outside your local network.
What you need before you start
- A computer or rented server running Windows or Linux, with enough free disk space for the CS2 dedicated server files and room for custom maps.
- Administrator or root access, so you can install software and change firewall rules.
- A Steam account that owns Counter-Strike 2. Steam’s Game Server Account Management page says the account must not be locked, community banned, or limited, must have a qualifying registered phone number, and must own the game before it can create a token.
- A plan for who will keep the server running. Game servers need updates each time CS2 is patched, so someone has to run the update routine.
Step 1: Install SteamCMD
SteamCMD is Valve’s command-line tool for downloading and updating Steam game server files. Steam Support states that Steam game servers use SteamCMD, and Valve’s Developer Community documentation covers current command syntax. Install it from Valve’s SteamCMD download before continuing.

Step 2: Install the CS2 dedicated server files
The CS2 client and the CS2 dedicated server share app ID 730. A setup guide from ForgeWorld Gaming, updated 8 September 2026, documents an anonymous SteamCMD install using force_install_dir, login anonymous, and app_update 730 validate. Do not use app ID 740, which belongs to the older Counter-Strike: Global Offensive dedicated server.
A typical Linux command, with the install folder replaced by your own path, looks like this:

./steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir /home/cs2server +login anonymous +app_update 730 validate +quitThe first download is large, and the validate flag is appropriate for a fresh install. Use it deliberately later, as explained in the maintenance section below.
Step 3: Get a Game Server Login Token for public access
A private LAN server can run without a token. For a server that players can find through the public server list, create a GSLT for app 730 on Steam’s Game Server Account Management page, then give it to the server. Steam’s page states that unused tokens can expire, that password resets regenerate tokens, and that operators are responsible for their tokens. Each eligible account can create up to 1,000 game server accounts, according to the same page; this is an account limit, not a performance figure, and Steam did not date the statement in the material reviewed.
Keep the token private. Do not paste it into forum posts, screenshots, public repositories, or shared configuration files. Steam explicitly says not to distribute game server login tokens to third parties, and it asks anyone who has shared a token to delete it.

Step 4: Start the server in dedicated mode
The ForgeWorld Gaming guide says to start the server with the -dedicated flag. On Linux, it recommends launching through the cs2.sh wrapper in the game directory. The map is chosen at startup, and the game mode is set with game_alias. The guide lists these modes: competitive, wingman, casual, deathmatch, and custom.
./cs2.sh -dedicated +game_alias competitive +map de_mirageIn the guide, game_alias sets both the mode and the game type. The map loads after the mode is selected, so if you change the mode, restart the server rather than expecting the old mode to change in place. Store persistent settings in server.cfg instead of retyping them on every launch. The guide’s setting for a server that accepts internet players is sv_lan 0.
To use the token, add it to the launch line or configuration as your chosen host’s documentation or Valve’s current developer documentation describes. Where the token setting is documented, use the exact name shown there and do not guess one.

Step 5: Open the required ports
The guide identifies port 27015 as the default game and query port. It carries gameplay traffic, server pings, and RCON, the remote administration console. A Linux VPS guide from a hosting provider recommends allowing UDP 27015 for gameplay, and TCP 27015 only if you use RCON.

Open only the ports your features need. Opening every port in the table does not make a server more reachable, and it widens the attack surface. Port numbers and launch flags can change between CS2 updates, so check them against the current guide before you publish a public server.

A server can run on a computer you control or on a rented VPS or game-server host. Steam Support warns that hosting locally for players outside your home network requires proper network, security-software, and game settings. A VPS gives you an always-on machine with a static address, but you then manage its operating system and security.

No single CPU or memory specification fits every player count and plugin setup. Test your server with the number of players you expect, and size it from that result rather than from a generic checklist.
Maintenance: updating without breaking custom files
When CS2 receives an update, your server needs the matching files. Steam Support confirms SteamCMD is the standard tool for this. The guide separates an ordinary app update from a validation run. A validation pass can overwrite files you have customized, so use it only when you suspect corrupted game files, and back up your configuration first. For a routine update on Linux:
./steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir /home/cs2server +login anonymous +app_update 730 +quitBefore each update, copy server.cfg, custom maps, and any plugin files to a separate folder. After the update, restart the server and check the console for errors.
When the server starts but players cannot connect
A server that starts is not the same as a server that is reachable. Work through these checks in order.

- Test locally first. Connect from the same machine or from another device on your LAN. If that fails, the problem is the server configuration or launch, not the internet path.
- Check the router. For a home server, confirm that UDP 27015 forwards to the server’s local IP address. A forward to the wrong address is a common cause of failure.
- Check the host firewall. Windows Defender Firewall,
ufw, or similar software can block the game even when the router is correct. - Check the provider firewall. VPS providers often run a separate network firewall. It must allow the same ports.
- Test from outside your network. A local connection does not prove that internet traffic can reach the server. Connect from a phone on mobile data or ask a friend on another network to join.
- Check the token. If the server runs but never appears in the public list, confirm the GSLT is applied and has not expired, been regenerated after a password reset, or been removed.
- Check the version. If players report a version mismatch, update the server files with SteamCMD and restart.
Valve’s GSLT ban guidance warns that using tokens in ways that create false inventories or player profiles through modifications can lead to bans. Do not run such features on a public server.
