To repeat a file, FFmpeg needs an explicit looping option; the basic real-time command alone sends a file once. A continuous broadcast also depends on the PC, FFmpeg process, and internet connection staying available, so test the complete setup before relying on it.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check the current status in YouTube Studio; the reviewed official guidance does not identify a separate India-specific eligibility rule. YouTube live-streaming eligibility.
- A Windows installation of FFmpeg. FFmpeg’s project site provides source code and links to Windows builds from gyan.dev and BtbN; those builds are linked downloads, not executables distributed directly by the FFmpeg project. FFmpeg download page.
- A prerecorded video file and a connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the bitrate you choose.
The official instructions do not establish a universal minimum PC specification or a guaranteed upload speed for India. Encoding load varies with the source, output codec, resolution, frame rate, and whether encoding uses software or hardware. Measure the actual Windows connection and test the chosen settings on the PC you intend to use.
Create a YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one, then copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that configuration. YouTube’s encoder workflow is to connect the encoder, check the preview, and use Live Control Room to go live when required. YouTube encoder setup.
- Treat the stream key as a password. It identifies where the encoder sends the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, repository, or message. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg with the replacement. YouTube stream settings and key guidance.
- Use the exact server URL and key arrangement displayed for your selected stream configuration. YouTube’s ingest address and key are configuration-specific; do not copy a key from an old stream or assume every account uses the same URL.
Choose ingest settings that fit your connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among video ingest codecs, with up to 60 fps. For a straightforward FFmpeg RTMP/RTMPS setup, H.264 is a practical baseline, provided it is supported by your installed build and settings. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. For RTMP/RTMPS audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3. These are YouTube’s listed recommendations and minimums, not a measurement of your connection or a guarantee that a particular stream will be stable. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Check outbound speed from the actual Windows connection, allow for other traffic and any backup stream, then test and monitor stream health. The full bitrate—not just the video bitrate—must fit within available upload capacity. YouTube streaming tips and bandwidth guidance.

Send a video file with FFmpeg on Windows
FFmpeg documents this basic real-time file-to-RTMP command:
ffmpeg -re -i "C:pathtovideo.mp4" -f flv "rtmp://SERVER-URL/STREAM-KEY"Replace the quoted input path with your file’s actual path. Replace the example destination with the server URL and key arrangement provided in Live Control Room. Keep the real key private, including when saving commands in a batch file. The -re option reads the input at its native rate instead of sending the file as fast as possible; -f flv specifies the RTMP output container used in FFmpeg’s example. This command sends one file. When playback reaches the end, that FFmpeg process finishes; it does not create an infinite loop, recover from every network interruption, or keep the Windows computer awake. FFmpeg’s documented example is a basic send command, not a tested Windows restart or continuous-loop script. Do not treat it as a guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting.
Make the video repeat and test the whole session
For a repeating source, add FFmpeg’s input looping option before the input file, for example:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i "C:pathtovideo.mp4" -f flv "rtmp://SERVER-URL/STREAM-KEY"-stream_loop -1 requests indefinite looping of the input. This handles repeating that file while the FFmpeg process and its connection continue to run; it is not by itself a restart policy for a crashed process or a dropped network connection. Verify behavior with your installed FFmpeg build and media file, and test the complete setup rather than assuming a loop flag provides recovery.
- Start FFmpeg before the scheduled event or planned handoff, as YouTube advises. Confirm that the command opens the file and that YouTube receives a signal.
- Open the stream in Live Control Room and inspect the preview. Confirm picture, sound, resolution, frame rate, and stream health before making the event public or relying on it.
- Check that the watch page is accessible to the intended audience and monitor the connection and encoder while the stream runs.
- When finished, end the stream using YouTube’s controls as appropriate, then stop FFmpeg. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume an individual session longer than that will be archived. YouTube encoder setup and archive guidance.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the stream is created or scheduled, and that FFmpeg is using the current stream URL and key together in the format shown in Live Control Room. If the key was exposed or changed, reset it there and update the command.
- The preview is unstable or YouTube reports poor stream health: Check sustained outbound bandwidth, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if needed, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Test again on the same connection and account for other traffic.
- FFmpeg exits when the video ends: The one-file command sends a single pass. Use an input loop such as
-stream_loop -1before-iand test that the source loops as intended. - The stream stops after a Windows or network interruption: A loop does not restart a terminated FFmpeg process or restore a broken connection. Check the PC’s power and sleep settings, internet access, and FFmpeg’s error output; restart the process and verify the preview. The reviewed official guidance does not guarantee local ISP uptime or provide a universal reconnect script.
- The session is not archived as expected: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Do not rely on a single longer session being archived.
Copyright and continuous prerecorded streams
Having permission to upload a video does not automatically settle every copyright or monetization question for a live broadcast. Use content you own or are licensed to stream, including music and images, and review YouTube’s current policies before scheduling a long-running feed. A looping video is not a workaround for copyright rules or YouTube’s channel and monetization policies; this FFmpeg setup does not determine whether a channel qualifies for monetization.
