To show the current song name during a 24/7 YouTube music stream, add a now-playing graphic as an overlay in your streaming setup. The overlay needs a source for the track titles: for a fixed sequence, that might be YouTube chapters or a maintained playlist; for music selected dynamically, it needs compatible metadata from the player. YouTube’s live-event title and description do not automatically become changing on-screen song labels.
Choose how the overlay will get song names
A now-playing overlay is a graphic placed over the video output. One OBS forum resource describes a browser-based “Music on stream” overlay that supports YouTube and YouTube Music, with YouTube chapters or a playlist in the video description as possible title inputs: OBS forum resource. These are possible workflows, not a guarantee of compatibility or synchronization with every player, playlist format, encoder, or continuous-stream setup.
Fixed order: use chapters or a prepared list
If the stream plays tracks in a known sequence, prepare a list of titles that follows that sequence, or use chapters if the overlay supports them. Keep the names, order, and timing aligned with the actual playback. A changed playlist, inserted track, or skipped section can make the label wrong until the list is corrected.
Changing order: use player metadata
If tracks are selected or changed dynamically, the overlay must receive the current title from the playback source through a compatible integration. Confirm that the actual player exposes track information in a form the overlay can read; the cited resource does not establish universal support for all players or playlist types.

Use broadcast metadata only for the overall event
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents title and description fields for the live stream resource, and its LiveBroadcasts reference covers event-level details such as title, description, start and end times, and privacy settings. These fields describe the broadcast, not a documented on-screen label that updates for each song. See the liveStreams reference and liveBroadcasts reference.
Set up and verify the display
- Identify the playback sequence. Decide whether the stream follows a fixed list or changes tracks dynamically. Choose chapters, a maintained playlist, or player-provided metadata accordingly.
- Configure a supported now-playing overlay. In OBS, add the overlay using the method its provider documents, such as a browser source where supported. Enter or connect the title source and set the graphic’s position and size so the song name remains legible without covering important video.
- Check every transition in a private or unlisted test. Compare the displayed title with the audio at the start of playback and after several track changes. Test any skips, playlist edits, or restarts that occur in your real setup.
- Plan for continuous operation. Check that the title source and overlay continue updating after the stream has run for a while and after the playback sequence loops. The available documentation does not establish 24/7 reliability for every overlay and player combination, so verify your particular configuration.
Song labels do not clear music rights
Displaying a song title is separate from having permission to broadcast the recording. YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content. Identified material may cause a placeholder image to replace the stream, and continued use can interrupt or terminate it. If you have licensed third-party content, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to avoid interruption. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and confirm that your rights cover live streaming on your channel.

YouTube’s Live Content ID matching is not a general-purpose song-label feature. YouTube describes it as available only to certain Content Manager partners, with requirements that include global rights and exclusive ownership of the content in the stream. A title overlay, song list, or stream URL does not provide those rights or prevent a claim.

For a do-it-yourself setup, the playback source and OBS overlay need to remain available wherever your encoder runs. If your stream depends on a home computer, that computer and its connection must stay on for the broadcast to continue.
