Capture the original site before it changes, label every view, connect design decisions to goals, and keep visual evidence separate from measured results.
1. Decide what the presentation needs to accomplish
First identify whether you are asking for approval, documenting completed work, or presenting a portfolio case study. Name the audience, the decision you want from them, and the outcome the redesign was intended to improve. That purpose determines which pages and evidence belong in the deck.

- Approval: focus on the proposed changes, the reasons behind them, and the decision or feedback needed.
- Project record: show the original problem, the changes delivered, and what was validated after launch.
- Portfolio case study: explain the design challenge, decisions, constraints, and available outcomes without implying results you did not measure.
2. Set goals and preserve the baseline
Before choosing screenshots, write down the redesign goals and the measures that will tell you whether they were met. HubSpot’s website redesign checklist recommends setting goals and metrics before a redesign, protecting marketing assets during the work, and measuring against the goals afterward. The exact measures depend on the project; the important point is to define them before seeing the finished design.
Capture the old site while it is still available. Record the original URL, capture date, page state, viewport dimensions, and any relevant device or browser conditions. Keep the original image files untouched. Make separate working copies for crops, callouts, or other annotations so the evidence remains available in its unaltered form.

3. Choose screenshots that answer specific questions
Different views demonstrate different things. Select each image for the point you need the audience to understand, rather than collecting screenshots simply to fill slides.
| View | Useful for showing | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| First screen (initial viewport) | Initial visual hierarchy, prominent content, and the visibility of key actions. | Match the viewport and page state between versions. |
| Full-page capture | Page structure, content sequence, and how sections fit together. | Use the same page boundary and capture method for both versions. |
| Focused crop or component view | A particular navigation item, form, card, or other design decision. | Label the crop so readers know where it sits on the full page. |
| Mobile or other responsive view | How layout and content change at a relevant viewport size. | Capture corresponding states at the same viewport width. |
W3C WAI advises designing for different viewport sizes in its Reflow guidance. Include responsive screenshots when the redesign changes or depends on behavior across screen sizes, not as a substitute for showing the desktop experience.

4. Capture old and new under matching conditions
A fair visual comparison holds the capture setup steady, so the redesign rather than a change in screenshot conditions explains the difference. A practitioner guide on creating a website redesign case study notes that mismatched conditions can exaggerate or hide changes.
- Use the same URL or corresponding page on both versions, and record any difference.
- Match viewport width and height, browser zoom, scroll position, and page state.
- For full-page views, use the same capture boundary and approach.
- Wait for images, fonts, animations, and other dynamic content to settle; note any asset that cannot be made consistent.
- Use equivalent browser conditions where possible, and disclose a meaningful difference if it cannot be avoided.
If the old site has disappeared or changed since launch, use a saved, dated capture when available. Identify it as an archived or earlier view rather than implying it was captured under the same live conditions as the new site.

5. Build slides that make the comparison readable
Put the old and new views side by side, or use a controlled reveal that lets the audience move between them. A side-by-side layout is easiest to inspect at a glance; a reveal can help with fine visual differences, but should not hide the labels or make the audience guess which state they are seeing.
- Label views plainly, such as “Before — home page — desktop, 1440 px” and “After — home page — desktop, 1440 px.”
- Keep page names and viewport labels visible when images are shown.
- Use matching image scale and crop. Avoid resizing one version in a way that changes the apparent proportions.
- Annotate only meaningful points. Each note should identify what changed and why it serves a user need or project goal.
A vendor presentation example describes ordered, titled screens and annotations linked to points on a screenshot; treat it as one possible implementation, not an independent endorsement. See i3Dify’s UX case study presentation example.

6. Explain the design decision, not just the difference
For each major change, pair the comparison with a short explanation: what changed, what evidence or constraint informed the choice, and which goal it supports. Choose comparison axes based on the project, for example:
Recommended Free Tools
- Content hierarchy and the order in which information appears.
- Navigation and the path to a key task.
- Visibility and placement of a call to action.
- Page structure or content grouping.
- Responsive layout at relevant viewport sizes.
- A specific accessibility improvement, with the validation evidence described separately.
W3C WAI’s before-and-after accessibility demonstration pairs examples and annotations with evaluation reports. The page says, “Preparing presentations on web accessibility: Demonstrating practical examples during presentation is usually very effective.” A screenshot can illustrate a visual change, but the explanation and evaluation are what establish the context for an accessibility claim.

7. Distinguish appearance from tested outcomes
A screenshot documents how a page looked at a particular moment. It does not, by itself, establish keyboard or touch behavior, loading performance, or accessibility. The practitioner guide above makes this distinction, and W3C’s demonstration cautions that it illustrates selected accessibility barriers and repairs, not every barrier or requirement.
If you make a claim about interaction, performance, accessibility, or business impact, provide the relevant test or outcome evidence separately. Define the goal and baseline, compare post-launch measurements against them, and state what remains unmeasured. A redesigned look is not proof that conversions, engagement, or another business outcome improved.
8. Use a slide sequence that follows the reader’s decisions
- Opening: identify the project, audience or business context, and purpose of the review.
- Goals and baseline: state the problem, the intended improvement, and the measures selected before redesign.
- Before: show dated original screenshots with page and viewport labels.
- Design decisions: present a small set of annotated examples tied to goals or user needs.
- After: show corresponding views captured under the same conditions.
- Comparison: place corresponding views side by side or provide a clearly labeled reveal, with concise explanations.
- Validation and outcomes: distinguish what was tested, what has measured results, and what is still pending.
- Decision or next step: ask for approval, feedback, follow-up work, or state the portfolio takeaway.
This is a practical sequence, not a required standard or a fixed slide count. Include only enough examples to make the important changes and requested decision clear.

If you need consistent captures without setting up a browser workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Here is a one-call cURL example for the after-state; replace the URL with the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
