You can loop pre-recorded sleep music, rain audio and a visual with FFmpeg, then send the output to YouTube Live using your stream URL and key. The computer running FFmpeg must remain on and connected, and the workflow needs testing and a restart plan before you rely on it around the clock. This guide covers the setup, YouTube’s encoder settings, operational risks and a cloud alternative.
What you need before you start
- Authorized media: audio and visuals licensed for a public, continuous YouTube livestream. Check whether the license allows looping, monetization and any required attribution; “royalty free” alone does not confirm those rights.
- FFmpeg: installed and available from your command line. Protocol support, including RTMPS, can depend on how your FFmpeg binary was built.
- A computer and stable upload connection: FFmpeg will keep running locally, so the machine, network and process must remain available.
- A YouTube Live stream: create or schedule one in YouTube Studio and obtain its server URL and stream key.

Prepare the media and decide how it should loop
Choose files with rights that cover livestreaming
Use audio and imagery you created or have permission to broadcast. Read the license for the specific use: public livestreaming, continuous playback, monetization and redistribution may be treated differently. YouTube identifies an active stream receiving a copyright strike and a stream matching another copyrighted live broadcast as restriction cases. Understand FFmpeg’s loop and pacing options
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option loops an input indefinitely. The -re option, equivalent to -readrate 1, reads a file at its native rate; FFmpeg describes this as useful when output flow speed matters, such as live streaming. These are input options, so place them before the relevant -i. Consult the documentation for your installed version and test the actual files. There is no single verified command here for every combination of separate audio and video files, loop boundaries, encoding and reconnect behavior. Their durations can differ: a short audio file may end before the visual, while a poorly joined rain recording can make a noticeable seam. Test the whole sequence for gaps, abrupt transitions, audio level and synchronization before going public.
Configure YouTube Live and choose an ingest method
Copy the server URL and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its encoder setup in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream, then enter both in your FFmpeg output configuration.
- Keep the key out of public scripts, screenshots, shell history and logs. Treat it like a password; reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.

RTMP/RTMPS and HLS are not interchangeable setup recipes

Set encoder values to match YouTube guidance
For RTMP/RTMPS, use YouTube’s current encoder page as the authority for the stream you are configuring. The values below are recommendations in that help page; it does not state a publication year. They are not a guarantee that a particular connection will sustain the selected rate.

These values come from YouTube’s encoder settings. Run an upload-speed test and select a bitrate that is reliable on your actual connection; available bandwidth can vary. The page also gives guidance for sample rate and other encoder settings, so check it rather than assuming a setting not listed here.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream using the intended media and encoder settings.
- Check YouTube’s preview: confirm the visual appears, the audio is audible, and playback stays synchronized through at least one loop boundary.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and make adjustments if it reports problems.
- Test how the FFmpeg process behaves if the connection drops or the process stops. Plan how you will notice the failure and restart it; uninterrupted recovery is not supplied automatically by this local workflow.
- Decide how you will retain recordings and check logs or alerts during operation.

Plan for the 24-hour archive limitation
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That stated condition does not establish that a single continuous 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete platform archive. If retaining the full program matters, plan a separate recording or archive workflow, or schedule shorter broadcasts with a deliberate handoff. YouTube live stream setup

Troubleshoot common problems
