YouTube provides the stream URL and key; the encoder or service handles the playlist and keeps sending video. For a true 24/7 broadcast, plan for continuous operation, a tested connection and backup, rights clearance, and a separate way for students to find individual lessons.
Before you build the stream
- Check live-stream access: YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Initial activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Prepare the lessons: Arrange recordings in a student-friendly order, decide whether to repeat the sequence or schedule specific lessons, and check that the video and audio are suitable for continuous playback.
- Clear the rights: Make sure the channel has the necessary rights for lesson footage, music, images, and other included material. YouTube may match third-party content during a live broadcast.
- Choose where the stream runs: A local computer, cloud service or dedicated encoder can send the broadcast. YouTube does not provide a native switch that continuously loops a playlist of recorded videos.
Choose a way to keep the lessons live

YouTube’s guidance puts the equipment question in perspective: “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” That is not a guarantee that basic equipment will sustain an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. YouTube also lists OBS as an HLS-capable encoder, but HLS is not required for a basic RTMP(S) stream. Compare options by who operates the encoder, playlist scheduling, internet dependency, failover, monitoring, costs and archive plan.
Create and test the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create or schedule the live stream. If live streaming is not activated on the channel, complete verification and activation first.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into the chosen encoder or service. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Set up the recorded-lesson sequence in the encoder or service. Choose the lesson order and repeat or schedule behavior there. YouTube supplies the destination for the feed; it does not itself loop a local playlist of prerecorded lessons.
- Start with an unlisted test. Open the public-facing watch page and check the picture, audio level, lesson transitions and stream status. Confirm that the intended playlist repeats or advances as expected.
- Test interruption recovery before launch. If the workflow offers a backup connection or failover, simulate a failure and verify that the stream resumes as intended. Monitor audio and video after the public launch as well.
Plan bandwidth and continuity
YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. If you configure primary and backup outputs, include both in the calculation: (primary bitrate + backup bitrate) × 1.2. For example, a 6 Mbps primary stream with a 6 Mbps backup calls for at least 14.4 Mbps of upload capacity under that calculation. This is a planning margin, not a guarantee against outages; test the actual connection and failover arrangement.
- Keep the encoder and its source files available for the entire broadcast if using a local setup.
- Monitor sound and picture, not only whether YouTube reports that the stream is live. A silent or frozen feed can remain technically connected.
- Check lesson transitions and playback order after any restart or playlist change.
- Where the encoder can save a local recording, verify that the archive file is growing and that storage will not fill during a long run.
Keep lessons available outside the live stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not make the same archive assurance for a 24-hour stream, so do not rely on one continuous broadcast as the only copy or index of the course. Keep the original lesson files and publish lessons individually, or maintain another stable lesson index students can use to find a specific topic.

Rights, matching and interruptions
The channel is responsible for having the rights needed for material in its live content. YouTube scans live streams for matching third-party content and may replace, interrupt or terminate the feed. A licence alone does not guarantee uninterrupted playback: YouTube notes that licensed third-party content can still be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. If a lesson includes licensed material, arrange the relevant allowlisting with the rights owner before relying on it in a continuous stream.
