In Minecraft, a stonecutter turns an eligible stone-family block into available shaped variants through a dedicated selection screen. The Java recipe documented by Mojang uses three stone blocks and one iron ingot. After crafting it, place the block, use it, insert a supported input, choose a displayed result such as stairs, slabs, walls, or a chiseled form, and collect the output. Exact recipes, accepted inputs, and yields can vary between Java and Bedrock and between game versions, so use your edition’s recipe book as the final check.

What a stonecutter does
A stonecutter is a functional block for shaping stone-family materials. Instead of remembering a separate crafting-table pattern for every architectural form, you select an input block and browse the forms available for that input. Mojang introduced it as a simpler way to craft stone shapes, including stairs, slabs, and chiseled blocks. The original Java snapshot description called it a “New functional block that provides a simplier way to craft various stones (Stairs, Slabs, Chiseled, etc)” (Mojang Studios, January 24, 2019).

A crafting table remains the general-purpose workstation for Minecraft recipes, while the stonecutter is a focused interface for stone construction. When you are building a wall, roof, path, façade, or other detailed structure, the stonecutter shows the shapes that the inserted material can currently make. That makes it easier to find a particular variant and avoids crafting intermediate forms that are unnecessary for the shape you actually want.

| Ingredient | Amount | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Stone | 3 blocks | The stonecutter’s body |
| Iron ingot | 1 | The cutting mechanism |
Open a crafting table and use the recipe-book entry for the stonecutter. The recipe-book pattern is the authoritative arrangement for the Java or Bedrock version you are playing. The cited three-stone, one-iron recipe comes from Mojang’s Java snapshot documentation, not a promise that every later release or edition uses an identical arrangement.
Java and Bedrock are not interchangeable for exact recipes
Java and Bedrock can differ in recipe behavior, accepted inputs, and available outputs. If the stonecutter recipe does not unlock after you have the listed materials, open the recipe book for your edition, confirm that the required ingredients are the same, and follow the pattern shown there. Do the same before relying on a particular conversion or output count. Screenshots and written guides should identify the edition and game version because a recipe that was correct in a Java snapshot may not describe a current Bedrock interface.
Gather the materials and craft the block
- Collect the ingredients. You need three stone blocks and one iron ingot for the Java recipe documented by Mojang. Keep the materials in your inventory so the recipe book can recognize them.
- Open a crafting table. Use the table’s crafting interface rather than trying to place the ingredients in the stonecutter itself; the stonecutter is the result of the recipe.
- Find the stonecutter entry. Search or browse the recipe book. If your edition and version support the recipe, the entry will show the required ingredients and the arrangement.
- Apply the displayed pattern. Place the three stone blocks and the iron ingot exactly where the recipe book indicates. Do not assume that a pattern from another edition is valid.
- Take the stonecutter. Move the crafted block into your inventory. If the output is unavailable, recheck the edition, version, ingredient names, and recipe-book unlock state before troubleshooting the block itself.
How to use a stonecutter
The operating sequence is short, but each step matters because the output list depends on the input you select.

- Place the stonecutter. Put it on a reachable surface where you can interact with its front face. Leave enough room to approach it and retrieve results.
- Open its interface. In Java Edition, right-click the block. In Bedrock Edition, use the platform’s normal Use action. Controller, touch, and keyboard bindings can vary, so use the action mapped to interacting with a block in your control settings.
- Insert a supported input. Move an eligible stone-family block into the input slot. The interface will update to show the transformations available for that exact block.
- Choose an output. Select one of the displayed shapes. Depending on the input and version, the list can include a stair, slab, wall, or chiseled variant. If a shape is not displayed, that input does not provide it in the current edition and version.
- Collect the result. Take the selected item from the output area and repeat the process for additional blocks. Keep the input slot supplied when making a large batch, but check the displayed result each time you change materials.
Why the output list is useful
The stonecutter does not present every stone shape for every material. It filters the choices for the block in its input slot, so the list itself is a quick compatibility check. This is safer than relying on a generic chart that may combine Java and Bedrock behavior or mix versions. Select the input first, then choose from what the interface actually offers.
What can a stonecutter make?
Stonecutter functionality is centered on stone-family construction pieces. Mojang’s description specifically names stairs, slabs, and chiseled blocks; later snapshot notes also mention additional stonecutter recipes. Depending on the input and version, you may see other architectural forms such as walls.
| Output family | What it is useful for | Availability rule |
|---|---|---|
| Stairs | Sloped roofs, steps, ledges, seating, and trim | Shown only when the inserted stone-family input supports that stair recipe in your edition and version |
| Slabs | Half-height floors, shelves, paths, ceilings, and detailing | Shown only when the current input has a slab conversion |
| Walls | Low barriers, retaining edges, foundations, and perimeter details | Version- and input-dependent; select the material to verify |
| Chiseled variants | Decorative panels, pillars, accents, and patterned surfaces | Shown when that input’s chiseled recipe is supported |
The table describes output categories, not a universal list of every block. Names and availability can change as Minecraft adds or adjusts recipes. The stonecutter’s own output panel is the definitive list for the block you have inserted.

Stonecutter versus a crafting table
Both blocks can be part of the same building workflow, but they solve different problems.
| Comparison point | Stonecutter | Crafting table |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Shapes supported stone-family inputs into listed architectural variants | Handles general Minecraft crafting recipes |
| How you select a result | Insert a material and choose from the dedicated output list | Use the fixed pattern for the recipe you want |
| Recipe directness | Designed to expose direct shape conversions and reduce unnecessary intermediate steps | Some shapes require a specific pattern or an intermediate item |
| Material efficiency | Yield depends on the exact input, output, edition, and version; verify before planning a build | Yield follows the particular crafting-table recipe |
| Range | Specialized for stone-family shaping | Broad: tools, utility blocks, building items, and many other recipes |
| Best use | Producing a chosen stone stair, slab, wall, or decorative variant repeatedly | Making items that are not stonecutter outputs and following general recipes |
A stonecutter complements rather than replaces a crafting table. Use the table to make the stonecutter and for recipes outside its specialty; use the stonecutter when you want a visible, material-specific menu of stone shapes.
Plan around version-sensitive yields
Do not apply a single yield number to every stonecutter recipe. The available conversion and the number of items returned are version-sensitive, and the supplied Java snapshot evidence does not establish a universal output rule for current Java and Bedrock releases. Before committing valuable materials to a large project, insert one test block and read the output quantity shown by your interface.

- Record the edition and game version when documenting a build or sharing instructions.
- Check the output quantity after selecting the exact input, rather than assuming all shapes return the same amount.
- Test a recipe again after a major update, because Mojang can add recipes or adjust functionality.
- Keep the recipe book available when teaching another player; it prevents a Java pattern from being mistaken for a Bedrock pattern.
A practical stone-building workflow
Making a consistent stair design
Start with the stone-family block you want visible in the finished build. Place one unit in the stonecutter and inspect the stair option. Select it, collect the result, and continue while the same material remains in the input slot. Because the output list is tied to the inserted block, changing materials midway through a project also changes the available choices; confirm the new list before crafting a batch.
Combining slabs and full blocks
For a floor or roof, use the stonecutter to check whether the chosen material offers a slab. Produce a small test quantity, place it beside a full block, and confirm the height and pattern are what you intended. This avoids converting an entire stockpile before discovering that the selected edition presents a different option or yield.
Adding decorative accents
Chiseled forms can provide visual breaks in a broad wall or column. Insert the same material used by the surrounding structure, choose the chiseled output if it appears, and make a few accents before scaling up. If the chiseled form is absent, the stonecutter is telling you that the current input and version do not expose that conversion; use another supported material or a different design rather than forcing an unavailable recipe.

Troubleshooting
The stonecutter recipe does not appear
- Confirm that you are using a crafting table and not the stonecutter interface.
- Check that the ingredients are the recipe-book entries for stone and iron ingot in your edition.
- Verify the pattern shown in the recipe book instead of copying a screenshot labeled for another edition.
- Check the game version. The three-stone, one-iron formulation is documented for Java 19w04; later behavior can differ.
The block opens but shows no outputs
- Make sure an input block is in the input slot.
- Use a stone-family block that the interface recognizes; not every block that looks like stone is necessarily a supported input.
- Remove and reinsert the material, then read the refreshed output list.
- If the list remains empty, test another known stone-family input and consult the recipe book or edition-specific documentation.
A desired stair, slab, wall, or chiseled form is missing
Availability is tied to the exact input and game version. The stonecutter does not guarantee every shape for every material. Try the material’s other displayed forms, verify the edition, and avoid using a generic cross-edition chart as proof that the missing option should exist.

The result quantity is different from a guide
Compare the guide’s edition and version with your own, then read the quantity in the output slot. The evidence for this topic does not support one universal yield rule, so the in-game result is the correct value for your installation.
Edition-aware checklist
Use this checklist whenever you craft or explain a stonecutter:
- Write down Java or Bedrock and the game version.
- Open the edition’s recipe book before arranging ingredients.
- For the Java snapshot recipe documented by Mojang, gather three stone blocks and one iron ingot.
- Place the stonecutter where it is reachable and open it with the correct Use action.
- Insert the exact stone-family input before choosing an output.
- Read the displayed shape and quantity instead of relying on a universal chart.
- Test a small batch after updates or when moving between editions.
Frequently asked questions
Is the stonecutter only for decorative building?
No. Its function is stone-family shaping, so it is useful anywhere you need practical stairs, slabs, walls, or other supported forms as well as decorative details. Its advantage is the direct, material-specific selection interface.
Can I use any block that looks like stone?
No universal visual rule covers every block. Insert the material and use the outputs displayed by your edition and version; that list determines whether the input is supported and which forms it can produce.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhy should I check the recipe book if I already know the recipe?
The documented three-stone, one-iron recipe is tied to Mojang’s Java 19w04 snapshot evidence. Edition and version changes can alter recipes, so the recipe book prevents an older Java arrangement from being applied to Bedrock or a later release.
