The right correction depends on where the error sits: a supplier’s GSTR-1, your ITC records, or a GSTR-3B you have already filed. First identify the tax period and financial year, whether that period’s GSTR-3B has been filed, whether the annual return has been furnished, and whether the error changes tax payable or ITC. Correcting records can help an invoice appear accurately in the recipient’s statement, but it does not by itself establish or preserve ITC eligibility.
Choose the correction route by form and filing status
| Where the error is | What to check or do | Key timing or consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier’s GSTR-1 is filed, but GSTR-3B for that period is not | Check whether same-period GSTR-1A is available to amend a record or add a missed one. | It is an optional, one-time facility for the period, available after GSTR-1 is filed or its due date passes (whichever is later) and before that period’s GSTR-3B is filed. |
| An invoice in an earlier-period GSTR-1 needs amendment | Use the relevant amended invoice or note section in GSTR-1 and identify the prior financial year and original document. | The GST Portal FAQ states that prior-year amendments or additions are not allowed after 30 November of the following financial year; verify the applicable rule and any extension for the period. |
| Your filed GSTR-3B has an omission or incorrect particular | Assess correction in the return for the month or quarter in which you notice the error. | Section 39(9) of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 describes a later-return correction, subject to statutory limits and interest where applicable. The original GSTR-3B is not simply reopened. |
| Your recipient ITC statement does not show supplier data | Reconcile the invoice and supplier filing against GSTR-2B, then assess ITC eligibility separately. | For supplies declared or amended through GSTR-1A, the GST Portal says recipient ITC appears in the next tax period’s GSTR-2B, not the same period’s statement. |
These routes are not interchangeable. A supplier-side correction may repair particulars or affect when data appears for the recipient; a filed GSTR-3B error follows the statutory later-return process. Check whether the correction increases output tax, reduces ITC, or changes only invoice details before filing.

Use GSTR-1A only while the same-period window is open
GSTR-1A is an optional supplier-side facility for making additions or amendments to GSTR-1 details for the same tax period. It is not a revised GSTR-3B. Once filed, its supplier-side changes auto-populate into that supplier’s GSTR-3B for the same period. The facility can be used once for the period, and it closes when the same-period GSTR-3B is filed.

Check the live portal for the relevant period rather than assuming a due date from an older example.

Handle an earlier-year GSTR-1 amendment with the correct cutoff
The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 FAQ states a cutoff of 30 November of the financial year following the year to which the invoice relates. For example, its FAQ says amendments or additions for FY 2022–23 invoices were allowed through 30 November 2023. The portal also says an amendment is subject to the CGST Act time limit.
That date should not be applied mechanically to every case. CBIC-hosted material cited for section 39(9) still contains September-based deadline wording, which is not aligned with the GST Portal FAQ. Confirm the current rule, applicable amendments or notifications, relevant financial year, and whether the annual return has already been furnished before relying on a cutoff.
Correct a filed GSTR-3B through a later return
Section 39(9) of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, as displayed on CBIC, says that when a registered person discovers an omission or incorrect particular after furnishing a return, the person must rectify it in the return for the month or quarter in which it is noticed, subject to the section’s conditions and payment of interest under the Act where applicable. The provision excludes errors discovered as a result of scrutiny, audit, inspection, or enforcement activity by tax authorities.
The CBIC page’s nearby deadline wording refers to September or the second quarter, or furnishing the annual return, whichever is earlier. Because this wording may not reflect later amendments, verify the current deadline for the particular period instead of treating that page text as universally current. If the correction changes tax payable or ITC, work out the return and interest consequences for the relevant periods before filing; involve a qualified GST practitioner where the treatment is unclear.
Reconcile the recipient’s GSTR-2B, then test ITC eligibility
The GST Portal FAQ states: “The ITC for the supplies declared or amended by the suppliers through FORM GSTR-1A will be available to the recipient in the next tax period FORM GSTR-2B.” Therefore, a same-period GSTR-2B that does not yet show a GSTR-1A change does not, by itself, mean the supplier correction failed.
When the relevant statement updates, match the invoice details and supplier data to your records. Then assess entitlement under the applicable ITC rules and restrictions independently. The portal lists reasons that credit may be unavailable and cautions that other legal restrictions can also apply; a GSTR-2B match is not conclusive proof that the credit is eligible. Reverse credit that is ineligible rather than relying on the statement alone.

Account for negative ITC from supplier amendments
The GST Portal FAQ says negative credit arising from amendment of B2B invoices, e-commerce documents, or B2B debit notes is to be reversed in GSTR-3B Table 4(A)(5). Check the current portal instructions for the specific return period before entering the adjustment.

Keep missed ITC distinct from reversed-and-reclaimed ITC in annual reporting
Annual-return treatment can differ depending on why the credit appears in a later year. In its FAQ for FY 2024–25, dated 15 October 2025, the GST Portal says Table 8C includes current-year ITC first availed in the next financial year within the specified period. It distinguishes this from credit claimed and reversed in the earlier year and reclaimed in the next year: that reclaim is reported in Table 13, with the FAQ illustrating the treatment in Tables 6B and 7H. These instructions are specific to FY 2024–25; do not carry them over to another year without checking that year’s guidance.

Use a documented correction workflow
As a prudent recordkeeping practice—not a quoted statutory checklist—retain the original invoice, relevant supplier communication, filed-return acknowledgement, the applicable GSTR-2B version, working papers, and the correction calculation. Then follow these steps:
- Identify the form containing the error, the tax period and financial year, the filing status of GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, and whether the annual return has been furnished.
- If the supplier’s GSTR-1 is filed but same-period GSTR-3B is not, check the portal for the still-open GSTR-1A facility. For an earlier-period invoice, check the amendment window and applicable cutoff instead.
- If a filed GSTR-3B is wrong, determine the later return in which the correction belongs and calculate any change in tax or ITC and potential interest under the rules applicable to that period.
- After a supplier amendment, monitor the recipient’s GSTR-2B for the next tax period and reconcile the updated record.
- Document the separate ITC eligibility assessment and any reversal or reclaim treatment that applies.
The goal is an accurate return trail and a separately supportable ITC claim—not merely a matching entry. Where the amendment deadline, tax effect, or eligibility is uncertain, verify the current portal guidance and applicable law before filing.
