To transfer pictures to a Seagate external hard drive, connect the drive, then copy the photos from File Explorer on Windows or Finder on Mac into a folder on the drive. A manual copy uses your computer’s built-in file manager; extra Seagate software is not inherently required. After the copy finishes, eject the drive through your operating system before unplugging it.
Copy pictures to a Seagate drive in Windows
- Connect the drive’s USB cable and any required power. Open File Explorer and check that the drive appears under This PC.
- In File Explorer, open the folder containing your pictures. Select the files or folders you want to transfer. Use copy and paste, or drag the selection into a folder on the Seagate drive.
- Wait until the copy operation is complete. Use Windows’ Safely Remove Hardware or eject option, and wait for the confirmation that it is safe to remove the drive before unplugging it.
Copy pictures to a Seagate drive on a Mac
- Connect the drive and open Finder. Check that the drive appears in the sidebar.
- In Finder, select the pictures or folder you want to copy. Copy and paste them, or drag them into a folder on the Seagate drive.
- Wait for copying to finish, then eject the drive in Finder. Unplug it only after it disappears from Finder.
If the drive will not accept pictures on a Mac
If the drive appears in Finder but you cannot save files to it, its format may be the reason. Seagate identifies NTFS as a common cause: macOS can read an NTFS drive but does not natively write to it. Some Seagate models may include an NTFS driver, but availability depends on the model; check that model’s official support or download page before relying on a driver. Seagate’s guidance on read-only drives explains this behavior.

Do not format the drive as a first step. Formatting is not needed for a normal copy when the drive is already mounted and writable, and it erases data stored on the drive. Back up anything important before changing its format. Seagate’s formatting guidance notes that the appropriate format depends on how you plan to use the drive.

If you need the drive to accept file copies from both Windows and Mac, Seagate identifies exFAT as a cross-platform option. Compatibility can vary with the drive model and operating-system setup. exFAT is not journaled, which can make it more susceptible to corruption if an error occurs or the drive is disconnected improperly. Eject it correctly every time. Seagate’s format and partitioning notes describe these trade-offs.

If the drive is intended for just one operating system or for its built-in backup utility, consider those requirements before changing its format. Seagate’s manual says exFAT is not compatible with or recommended for Windows File History or macOS Time Machine. The suitable choice depends on your computer, drive model, and backup workflow; there is no one format that fits every use.
Troubleshoot a Seagate drive that is not visible
- It does not appear in File Explorer or Finder: Check the USB connection and any required power, then look again in the computer’s file manager. The drive needs to appear there before you can copy pictures to it.
- It appears but copying fails on Mac: Check whether it is NTFS-formatted and read-only on the Mac. Avoid formatting until you have backed up any files already on it.
- The copy seems finished: Open the destination folder on the drive and confirm that the expected pictures are present before ejecting it.
Eject the drive before unplugging it
Use the operating system’s eject or safe-removal control rather than disconnecting the cable directly. Seagate warns that the computer may still be performing file or housekeeping operations; unplugging abruptly can corrupt or damage files. Its safe-removal instructions cover both Windows and Mac.
