To copy FFmpeg logs from a VPS, first find where the running process sends its output: a report file, a systemd journal, or a supervisor or redirected log. Save the relevant output as a text file, then run scp from your own computer to download it over SSH. For a new FFmpeg run, use -report to create a report file. Compare the log’s timestamps with YouTube Live Control Room errors, and redact stream keys or other secrets before sharing.
Choose the log source that matches how FFmpeg was started
| Situation | Where to look | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| You are starting or restarting FFmpeg | Have FFmpeg write a report with -report or FFREPORT. |
The report covers that invocation. -report enables debug-level verbosity and may create a large file. |
| FFmpeg is an existing systemd service | Query the journal using the actual service unit name and a relevant time window. | This works only if the output is captured by the journal and your account has permission to read it. |
| FFmpeg was started another way | Check the process supervisor, shell redirection, terminal session, or configured log destination. | The exact location depends on how the VPS was set up. An existing process cannot necessarily generate a complete report retroactively. |
FFmpeg’s default logging destination is stderr, so do not assume output was saved to a file. Identify how the process was launched before choosing a retrieval method. See the FFmpeg generic options documentation for report and logging behavior.

Write a report for a new FFmpeg run
Run the command in a directory where the account has permission to write. Add -report to your existing command:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →ffmpeg -report [your existing FFmpeg input and output arguments]
The bracketed phrase is explanatory, not literal shell syntax. Keep the input and output arguments from your actual command. FFmpeg writes a timestamp-named report in its current working directory; the report includes the command line and log output, and -report implies debug verbosity. Check that the report exists and is non-empty before trying to copy it.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
For a chosen filename and log level, FFmpeg documents this pattern:
FFREPORT=file=ffreport.log:level=32 ffmpeg [your existing arguments]
Here, level=32 is FFmpeg’s documented info-level example. Replace the explanatory bracketed text with your actual arguments. Errors while parsing the FFREPORT environment variable are not fatal and may not appear in the report, so verify the resulting file rather than assuming the setting worked.

Save logs from an existing systemd service
If FFmpeg runs under systemd and its standard output or error is connected to the journal, query the real unit name. This example shows the last 30 minutes:

The date and times are examples; use the window that matches the incident and your system’s time basis. The file is written in the directory where you ran the command. journalctl -u filters entries by unit; access to system-wide journal entries depends on local permissions. Use an authorized account or administrator if needed. For details, consult the systemd 255 journalctl manual.
Find logs when FFmpeg was not launched by systemd
If there is no relevant journal output, find the destination configured by the way FFmpeg was started. A supervisor may capture output in its own logs; a shell command may have redirected it to a file; or the output may have gone only to a terminal. Check the launcher or service configuration and identify both the destination and the time span you need. There is no universal path for these setups.

Download the log to your computer with scp
Run scp in a terminal on your local computer, not in the VPS shell. Substitute the actual SSH username, hostname, and remote file path:

Match FFmpeg output to YouTube’s stream diagnostics
Use the same time window when reviewing the FFmpeg report or journal and YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube displays timestamped stream-health errors, which can help distinguish an encoder symptom from a network or ingest-setting issue. Check the encoder’s picture and sound, encoder errors, CPU load, outbound connectivity, and an archive if one is available. YouTube’s guidance also covers ingest format and codecs, bitrate, audio/video stream configuration, keyframe frequency, and resolution. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions help.
Troubleshoot common log-copy problems
- No report file appeared: Confirm FFmpeg ran with
-reportor a validFFREPORTsetting, that it ran in the directory you checked, and that the account could write there. Verify the file exists and is non-empty. journalctlreturns no relevant entries: Check the exact unit name and incident time range. Confirm the process is managed by systemd and that its output reaches the journal; otherwise locate the supervisor or redirection destination.- Journal access is denied: Use the permissions available on that VPS or ask an authorized administrator to retrieve the relevant entries.
scpreports a login or connection error: Verify the SSH username, hostname, port, and key or other authentication method. Confirm your local computer has an OpenSSH client.scpsays the file cannot be found: Check the remote path and that the file exists on the VPS. Remember that the command runs locally and the path before the space-dot is the remote source.- The copied output seems incomplete: Use a file redirect or
--no-pagerwhen saving journal output, and select a time window that covers the incident. Terminal display may be paged or truncated.
Prepare a useful, safe troubleshooting report
Before sharing a report, inspect both the log and command line. Redact stream keys, tokens, private URLs, IP addresses, or other sensitive details; preserve the error text and timestamps needed to diagnose the problem. Include the FFmpeg version/build banner, the command with secrets removed, what you expected, what happened, and whether you can reproduce it. These details align with the FFmpeg project’s bug-reporting guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your underlying goal is keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, rather than maintaining an FFmpeg process on a VPS, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded video to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
