Copy and paste on a Chromebook is fast once you know the shortcuts ChromeOS actually supports. Text and images both work, but the best method depends on where the content lives (a webpage, a document, or a screenshot).
This guide covers the standard workflow plus the practical extras: right-click/touchpad copying, image copying from websites, screenshot-to-clipboard shortcuts, and clipboard history when your Chromebook supports it.

What You Can Copy and Paste on a Chromebook
You can copy and paste plain text, rich text (in many apps), links, and images. The exact result depends on the destination app (for example, Google Docs preserves formatting more often than a simple text field).
Typical destinations include Chrome tabs, Google Docs, Google Slides, Gmail, YouTube comments, and most chat boxes.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Prerequisites and Common Constraints
Before you troubleshoot, check these basics: your Chromebook is running a reasonably recent ChromeOS build, the content is selectable, and the destination supports pasting images/text.
- Some websites block copying: You may not be able to copy text or images due to site protections.
- Some fields aren’t paste-friendly: Password fields and certain secure dialogs usually won’t accept clipboard content.
- Formatting varies: Pasting into a plain text box may strip styling.
Text Copy/Paste Shortcuts (Keyboard + Touch)
Keyboard shortcuts
These are the core shortcuts most Chromebook users want. They work across the web and most apps.
| Action | Shortcut (Chromebook) |
|---|---|
| Copy | Ctrl + C |
| Paste | Ctrl + V |
| Cut | Ctrl + X |
| Select all | Ctrl + A |
To paste, click where you want the content first—cursor placement matters. Then hit Ctrl + V.

Touchpad and right-click workflow
If you prefer the mouse/touchpad route, you’ll usually get the same results from the context menu.
- Highlight text by clicking and dragging across it.
- Right-click the highlighted area (or tap with two fingers on the touchpad).
- Select Copy.
- Click where you want the text.
- Right-click and choose Paste.
On-screen context menu
On some Chromebook touchscreens, you may see a floating selection menu (with options like Copy/Paste). If the menu doesn’t appear, try selecting text slightly more precisely (drag the selection handles) and then tap and hold again.
Copy and Paste Images on Chromebook
Image copying is a little less uniform than text. Websites may block image copying, and some apps expect an image file upload instead of a direct paste.
That said, there are three reliable paths: copy from a webpage, paste into an image-capable destination, or copy an image by taking a screenshot directly into your clipboard.

Copy an image from a webpage
Try the browser context menu first. If it’s blocked, use the screenshot method.
- Find the image in the webpage.
- Right-click the image.
- Choose Copy image or Copy image address (wording varies by site and browser behavior).
- Click your destination (document/editor/chat).
- Press Ctrl + V or right-click → Paste.
Paste an image into a document or editor
Most Google tools (Docs/Slides/Drawings) and many editors accept pasted images. If pasting doesn’t work, you may need to use the destination’s insert option.
- Google Docs: Pasted images usually insert at the cursor position.
- Google Slides: Pasted images typically create an image object in the slide.
- Many chat apps: If they reject the paste, try uploading instead.
Copy an image using a screenshot (clipboard)
This is the most consistent way to copy an image on ChromeOS, especially when websites disable “Copy image.” You’ll capture to clipboard, then paste like any other image.
On most Chromebooks, the “Show windows” key is in the top row and looks like a rectangle (overview). Use it with the shortcuts below.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFull-screen screenshot to clipboard
If supported on your model/build, you can capture the entire screen and copy it directly to the clipboard.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Show windows. - Open the destination where you want the image.
- Press Ctrl + V.
Select-region screenshot to clipboard
This is the go-to method for copying a portion of the screen (a diagram, a screenshot snippet, a UI element).
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Show windows. - When the crosshair/screenshot selector appears, drag to highlight the area you want.
- Release to capture to the clipboard.
- Paste with Ctrl + V.
Clipboard History on ChromeOS (When Available)
Some Chromebook users have a clipboard history feature. Instead of only pasting the most recent item, you can paste from a short history list.

Open clipboard history
Press Search + V. The clipboard pane should appear (the key may be labeled “Launcher” depending on your Chromebook).

Click the item you want, then paste into your active text field using the clipboard pane controls or by selecting an entry and applying paste behavior. The exact UI depends on ChromeOS version and app.
Limitations
- Not every Chromebook or ChromeOS version has the feature.
- Clipboard history may store text more reliably than complex content (like pasted images from every source).
- Some apps ignore clipboard history and only accept the last paste item.
Copy/Paste Between Apps and File Types
Cross-app behavior is where many people get stuck. The clipboard content may be treated differently depending on the destination.
Copy/paste text between web and Google Docs
- Highlight text on the webpage.
- Press Ctrl + C.
- Open Google Docs and click in the document.
- Press Ctrl + V.
If formatting looks off, try pasting into plain text first and then reapply formatting. Some sites paste as simplified text to avoid script or unsafe formatting.
Copy/paste images into Google Docs and Slides
- Copy the image (right-click → Copy image, or screenshot to clipboard).
- Click in Google Docs/Slides.
- Press Ctrl + V.
If nothing appears, use the app’s Insert menu and upload the image file. For screenshots, you may have to save the screenshot instead of copying it to the clipboard.
Paste into chat apps and email
Many chat and email clients accept pasted text reliably. Images are more variable—some accept paste, others require you to attach or upload.
- If paste doesn’t work, look for an Attach or Upload button.
- For best results, paste from the clipboard history if available.
Troubleshooting: When Copy/Paste Fails
If Ctrl + C or Ctrl + V doesn’t work, don’t assume the clipboard is broken. Most failures come from selection issues, blocked sites, or the destination rejecting the content.

Fix 1: Confirm the selection
Make sure the text highlight is visible and correct. Try reselecting from scratch (click-drag again) and then press Ctrl + C.
Fix 2: Try keyboard vs. mouse method
Some pages handle keyboard events differently than context menus. Try one method, then the other: right-click → Copy/Paste, or Ctrl + C / Ctrl + V.

If pasting seems like it’s using the wrong item, open Search + V and choose the correct entry—if your Chromebook shows clipboard history.
Fix 4: Restart the browser or tab
When the clipboard works but paste doesn’t, try reloading the current tab (refresh) or restarting the browser. On ChromeOS, a tab crash can make copy/paste unreliable even though shortcuts still respond.
Fix 5: Hardware issues (touchpad, keyboard)
Test quickly: open a plain text field (like the address bar is not ideal; use a Notes app or a Google Doc), then copy/paste from a simple source.
- If Ctrl + C doesn’t trigger copy anywhere, your keyboard layout or key mapping may be off.
- If right-click works but keyboard doesn’t, it’s likely keyboard/shortcut mapping.
Fix 6: Permissions and site restrictions
Some websites deliberately prevent copying (for example, media players, protected content, or restricted documents). If right-click → Copy is missing and Ctrl + C does nothing, the site may be blocking copy.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Pasting without a cursor: click inside the destination field first.
- Copying too small a selection: drag more carefully so you capture the full text/image region.
- Assuming copy image always works: many sites block “Copy image,” so be ready to use a screenshot.
- Forgetting formatting differences: text may lose bold/links when pasted into plain text areas.
FAQ
Why can’t I copy an image from a website?
Many sites disable right-click and copying for copyright or UI reasons. Try screenshot-to-clipboard on your Chromebook and paste that image instead.
How do I copy text from a locked PDF on my Chromebook?
Some PDFs block selection and copying. If the PDF is protected, ChromeOS may not allow copying. Try opening the file in a PDF viewer that supports selection where allowed, or use screenshot capture for permitted content.
Does copy/paste work in Google Docs on a Chromebook?
Yes. Ctrl + C to copy and Ctrl + V to paste are standard and usually preserve formatting from webpages and other Google Docs when supported.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How do I copy a screenshot and paste it into an email?
Use the screenshot-to-clipboard shortcut on your Chromebook, then paste with Ctrl + V into the email compose box. If your email client doesn’t accept paste, attach the screenshot file instead.
Where do my copied images go?
They go into your clipboard (and temporarily live there). If you copy an image from a webpage, you’re pasting from the clipboard into the destination immediately.
Bottom Line
For most tasks, copying text on a Chromebook is just Ctrl + C and pasting is Ctrl + V. For images, try right-click first, and use screenshot-to-clipboard when websites block copying.
If copy/paste ever stops working, focus on selection, method (keyboard vs. mouse), app compatibility, and whether clipboard history (Search + V) is available on your device.
