You can convert a WebP to JPG on Windows without installing software if an image editor already on your PC can open WebP and offers JPEG or JPG as a save option. Use Save as or Export, save a new copy, and check the result. This is not guaranteed on every Windows setup: the app and any installed codec determine whether WebP opens.
One important trade-off: JPG cannot preserve WebP transparency. Transparent areas have to become visible pixels, so inspect the background and edges after conversion. If you need transparency, keep or make a PNG copy instead.

Convert WebP to JPG with an editor already on your PC

In File Explorer, right-click the
.webpfile and choose an image editor already installed on your computer. Alternatively, open the editor and use its Open command to select the file.What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If the editor opens the image, choose Save as or Export. Select JPEG or JPG from the available formats.

Save with a new filename, preferably in a location where you can find both copies. Keeping the original WebP lets you return to it if the JPG looks wrong or you later need its transparency.

Open the saved file and check that it is a JPEG and that the image looks right, especially where the source had transparent areas.
The specific menu names and available formats vary by editor. Microsoft’s Office guidance describes JPEG as an available image save format, but it is not a Paint-specific set of instructions; use the options actually shown in your installed app: Microsoft’s guidance on saving a picture as a separate file.

Why WebP may not open on your Windows PC
“Without installing software” depends on what is already installed and enabled. Microsoft’s Windows Imaging Component (WIC) documentation lists WebP as an extension codec available through the Microsoft Store; WIC codecs can be built in or added as extensions. That does not mean every Windows editor or installation can decode WebP: Microsoft’s WIC codec overview.
Microsoft’s Windows app file-type reference lists .webp and .jpg among file types for photo viewer and editor apps, but it does not promise that a particular app on your PC supports both. The reference was updated June 23, 2026: Microsoft’s supported file types reference.
There is also a narrower version-specific detail: Microsoft’s .NET System.Drawing.Imaging.ImageFormat.Webp API documentation says WebP support dates from Windows 10 version 1809. That statement applies to the documented API; it does not establish that Paint, Photos, File Explorer thumbnails, or every Windows installation can open WebP without an extension: Microsoft’s .NET WebP API reference.

If the file does not open

Try another image editor that is already installed, or open the editor first and use its Open command.

Check which app is associated with the file type, or search Windows for options for an unknown file type. Microsoft’s guidance describes these steps: Microsoft’s guidance for opening a file with a different app.

If none of your existing apps can decode WebP, a dependency-free conversion may not be available on this PC. Windows may offer a Store codec extension, but installing or enabling one would no longer meet the no-install requirement.

What happens to transparency when you save as JPG?
WebP can contain optional alpha transparency, while JPG cannot retain that channel. When transparent pixels are converted to JPEG, they must become visible pixels against a background; the color and behavior depend on the editor. Inspect the JPG around transparent areas and their edges, and choose a suitable background if the app offers that control. The WebP specification describes optional alpha and animation, and Microsoft distinguishes transparent PNG from JPEG: IETF RFC 9649: WebP and Microsoft’s image format guidance.
If transparency matters, keep the WebP original or save a separate PNG copy. PNG supports transparency; JPEG is often used for pictures with many colors. These are format choices, not a guarantee about which format will produce the smallest or best-looking file for your particular image.
Do not rename the file extension
Changing .webp to .jpg in a filename does not convert the image data. Use the editor’s JPEG/JPG save or export option so it encodes a JPEG file; Microsoft’s documentation treats the formats as distinct image types: Microsoft’s image format guidance.

If your WebP is animated
The simple save-as workflow assumes a still image. WebP can also contain animation, and behavior when an editor exports animated WebP as JPG depends on that app. It may select one frame or refuse the conversion; check the result and preserve the original if you need all frames.
Windows 10 support is a separate consideration
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That support status is separate from whether an editor or codec can open a WebP file; consult Microsoft’s Windows guidance if you still use Windows 10: Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.
