To make a YouTube loop stream, export a compatible video file in HandBrake, add it to an OBS Studio scene as a Media Source with Loop enabled, then stream from OBS to YouTube Live. Set the live encoder bitrate separately from the file’s export settings, and test your actual internet connection before relying on a resolution for a long stream.
What HandBrake does—and what it does not do
HandBrake is a free, local video transcoder: it converts a source file into an output file. OBS Studio plays that file and sends the live feed to YouTube. YouTube’s live-stream encoder settings apply to the OBS-to-YouTube feed, not to HandBrake’s file export.
This workflow is useful when you want a pre-recorded video to play repeatedly as a live broadcast. It does not turn a camera feed into a loop, and it does not make HandBrake a streaming encoder.
Before you start
- Install HandBrake from an official source. Its download page lists version 1.11.2 as current at the time checked; versions can change, so confirm the current release on HandBrake’s downloads page. The HandBrake team identifies handbrake.fr, its GitHub project and Flathub as official download locations. HandBrake is free and runs locally without an account.
- Install OBS Studio and have access to YouTube Live and your stream key. OBS sends the stream; HandBrake does not need the key.
- Use video and audio you have permission to broadcast. The software documentation does not establish copyright permission, account eligibility or India-specific legal requirements. Check YouTube’s authoritative requirements for your account and location.
- Allow enough disk space for both the source and converted file if you plan to keep both. An external SSD is optional, not required for conversion or looping.
Convert the video in HandBrake
- Open your source. Launch HandBrake, select the video file, and wait for it to scan.
- Choose a starting preset. HandBrake describes its default Fast 1080p30 preset as a good starting point for beginners. Its Creator presets use MP4, H.264 video and AAC stereo audio, and are described as suitable for video-hosting services including YouTube. See the HandBrake preset guide.
- Match output dimensions and frame rate to your source and intended stream. Presets can downscale resolution or limit frame rate. Do not assume the output retains the source’s dimensions or frame rate: check the preset’s settings and the resulting file.
- Check the audio layout. Creator presets use AAC stereo. A preset that does not include surround sound may encode only stereo and discard discrete surround channels. If preserving a particular audio layout matters, verify the audio tracks and output settings before encoding.
- Choose a destination and filename. Make sure the destination has enough free space, then start the encode.
- Inspect the finished file. Confirm it plays, has the expected picture dimensions and frame rate, and includes the audio you want. HandBrake’s export is a file; the live bitrate is configured later in OBS.
Loop the converted file in OBS
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene that will carry the pre-recorded video.
- Add a Media Source. In the Sources area, use + and select Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one, then browse to the HandBrake output file. OBS supports MP4 and several other video formats; see its Media Sources documentation.
- Enable Loop. In the Media Source properties, select Loop. OBS describes this property as specifying whether the file plays again once playback has completed.
- Check the scene and audio. Start playback in OBS, confirm the video fits the canvas as intended, and watch the audio meter. Make a brief recording or test broadcast to check that both picture and sound are present.
Set the live stream settings separately
Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard if you need help choosing initial settings, then verify them with a test. YouTube recommends RTMPS for sending a live stream. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR bitrate encoding; and a recommended keyframe frequency of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Use a setting supported by your encoder and check YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the current details.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Live output example | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | Keyframe guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
These are YouTube’s live ingest recommendations for the listed H.264 modes, not HandBrake export bitrates and not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them. The right resolution and bitrate depend on your real, stable upload capacity. The available evidence does not establish upload speeds for a particular Indian ISP plan or location, so test the connection you will actually use rather than assuming a plan name or advertised speed is enough.
Test before going live
- In OBS, confirm the correct scene, Media Source, Loop setting and audio source.
- Run a short test stream or recording. Check that video motion is smooth, audio is audible and in sync, and the file loops as expected.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health during the test and while live. YouTube advises testing audio and video motion and watching stream health.
- If the stream is unstable, lower the live resolution or bitrate and test again. Choose a level the actual upload connection can sustain reliably.
Common problems and fixes
- The video plays once and stops: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop.
- The live stream is choppy or drops frames: The selected live bitrate may exceed what the upload connection can sustain. Reduce bitrate or resolution, then test again.
- The output looks softer or moves differently from the source: A HandBrake preset may have downscaled the picture or limited frame rate. Review the output dimensions and frame rate and choose settings suited to the source and intended live stream.
- Surround channels are missing: The selected preset may encode stereo rather than preserve discrete surround channels. Check the audio tracks and preset before re-encoding.
- YouTube reports a stream configuration issue: Compare OBS’s live encoder configuration with YouTube’s current guidance, including CBR bitrate and keyframe interval, then run another test.
- There is no audio: Check that the file has an audio track, OBS’s audio meters move during playback, and the intended audio is included in the output.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the YouTube loop to continue without keeping a home computer, OBS or an internet connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the file as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and includes 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
